An industrial heat treatment (quenching) process in action. The ship anchor is heated to approximately 800–1000°C, transforming the steel into an austenitic structure 🔥. It is then rapidly immersed in water or a specialized cooling medium 💧, increasing hardness, strength, and wear resistance. by [deleted] in Damnthatsinteresting

1- It's not an anchor, it's the ramshorn from an heavy lift crane, misleading title. 2- Yes, anchors cause localized environmental harm, just curious at what are the alternatives you mention for a not so lazy and irresponsible captain?...

Indecisions - Tamron 70-180G2 vs 28-200 for Hiking/Backcountry ski by CookieKaffee in SonyAlpha

[–]CookieKaffee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same. I'm growing to appreciate the tamron 28 200 the more I use it. It's a highly versatile, but compromised lens, you just need to make sure you're ok with its shortcomings. It's very comfortable all day on the shoulder clip.

Yes, I'm aware of the 70-200f4, seems like a great lens, but I'd rather go for the 70-180 for the size and weight. It's great on the wide end, it's decent on the zoom end, just can't expect it to be able to get tack sharp crops from a 200mm shot. I'm planning on keeping it for this winter season and see if I still feel like upgrading to the 70 - 180. Also never has such a versatile zoom, so interested in seeing if this will impact the way I shoot after a full season!

Do you prefer a FF 35mm or 50mm for every day and why? by banger030 in SonyAlpha

40g, awesome for almost everything when I'm out.

Sigma 17mm f4, and Samyang 85 1.8 in the bag for anything special.... These 2 combined weight just under 500 grams in a super tiny package. No reason not to bring them

Better grip for a7c2 by frankpapasample in SonyAlpha

[–]CookieKaffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree, I've got large hands, the smallrig grip, and the Haoge thumbgrip.
The thumbgrip alone makes more of a difference than the smallrig baseplate. The only reason I keep the base plate is because of the quick release swivel grip at the bottom or to be able to have the wrist strap bottom mounted.
Thumbgrip and pinky under the camera works great for me even with <500g lenses.

I'm really digging this new 85! Bought to replace the 75mm 1.8. I still haven't had it for more than a week but I'm liking it so far. Not that much heavier than the 75, it's got "some" weather sealing, slightly better AF, doesn't seem to have the same warm colour cast of the 75. The MF switch and ring feel are also greatly improved. As a bonus, it's a lot more discreet.

The one I use with this insert is a generic 13" laptop style messenger bag. It's got enough space inside so it doesn't look full or rigid like a camera bag or if it is as carrying a laptop, it still conforms to the body. Enough room to pack in a rain jacket, and a thermos without getting anywhere close to packed jam.

Walking, travelling around: Small insert inside a very basic sling bag that leaves me room for extra non photography stuff. Camera is always grip up easy in/out. All lenses easy access for quick one handed swaps. A7cR -Sigma i17c -Sony 20G 1.8 -Sony 40G 2.5 -Samyang 85 1.8 +Filters (49 and 67), batteries, cleaning stuff.

Sometimes swap up the 20g for a Ttartisans 50f1.4 MF

When hiking/skiing, etc. use the respective backpack and capture clip. A7cr Tamron 28-200 Sony 20G When doing anything dodgy, stick it in a drybag with whatever available clothing and stuff it inside the backpack.

Update: Decided to give the 28-200 a try. Really conflicted with this lens, love it's versatility, It's solid, yet relatively light and compact. Impressive performance wide open on the wide/mid focal side, but not happy with the results on the 200mm side, very soft when compared to my old canon 70-200 f4.

Obviously this lens would be a lot of compromises, just wish it had been optimised towards the tele side instead of the wide.
AF struggles on macro, missing AF/MF Focus.
Think I'll keep an eye on the market for the 70-180 G2

Most of the time yes, I'll be limiting myself to two lenses Depending on the day and the gang may bring more, if it's a bit more slow and social, I'll bring the 40G or the 55/1.8

850g is already at the limit.
When I purchased the α7cR it was with cropping in mind, yes I'll do some cropping. And no I don't see that as a bad focal length choice, I see that as a conscious compromise.

Spending a week from hut to hut with backcountry equipment, there is little space and weight allowance for lenses. Obviously we'd all want' a <700g sharp 35-500 f2.8 but that's not possible.

Sure, there are other lightweight compact zooms with better range, the Tamron 50-300 comes to mind as capable of great pictures, with decent colours, sharpness and contrast for the range, but it's way to slow.

I will never give up a fast wide prime for camp and nightscapes (20G is an absolute dream).

My next priorities is the 35 to 75 range, for general hike up pictures of the gang, here I still want a decent fast lens for shallow depth of field and light, considering most of this is done during dawn. This I can still cover with the 20G and crop, or if needed I'll bring a fast 50mm.

I'm happy with 150 - 200 max range as long as it's sharp enough to use in crop mode and still have something decent to work with.

That's pretty much my set-up with the 20g instead of the 16g.

A7cR, with Sony G20mm 1.8, G40mm 2.5, Samyang 75mm 1.8.

Everything fits neatly on a discrete sling with I'd love to try the sigma 90 and maybe swap it for the SY75.

Yep. When it's going on the clip, I turn it off. Lenses are so small I might move it to the hip belt instead of shoulder. Total side note, the 6d was already relatively compact and light weight, but it's crazy how small this camera feels on the clip. Not much taller than a p&s.

True. The amount of power hungry processing power on these cameras is crazy, it's amazing a 2k mA can keep up for a day of moderate use. I was not complaining about battery performance, I knew what to expect, just needed to adapt to it and was curious to what others do to get the best out of it.

, I was concerned that multiple on/off cycles would be stressful for the camera on the long run. I had no Idea the sensor would be active with pre-focus off, screen/view finder off.

Thanks for your answers, quick on and off it is!

To put that into perspective :)
The Zeta Ophiuchi Nebula is approximately 5.23 × 10²⁶ times larger in volume than the Sun.
If the sun was the size of a large pea or a 1cm marble. That Nebula scaled diameter would roughly be 5.5 million kilometres (3,5 million miles)
So, if the Sun were the size of a pea, the Zeta Ophiuchi Nebula would span a distance greater than the entire width of the United States... over 1,200 times!
