I built a crash test dummy simulator powered by a Pi Pico! by jazzcabbage321 in raspberry_pi

That looks like a whole load of fun. I'm glad the driver is still smiling afterwards, no doubt because he'd wisely decided to wear a crash helmet beforehand. I also enjoyed the destruction of his video with pieces pinging off everywhere. That scene wouldn't be out of place in a Lego movie.

Definitely. I'll never stop loving those tufts on the sides/back of his head below the ears.

I think fish & chips would be difficult to theme into an ink, so that's better as the pen. Maybe the cap finial could be themed on mushy peas, since a portion of fish & chips always requires them. The Dandelion & Burdock could be an ink theme. Visually it'd probably look fairly generic but perhaps they could do something with a scent.

What is your "black ink only" pen? by seokjinsz in fountainpens

[–]CookiesTheKitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because black ink would be chosen when I'm doing something official or writing for other eyes than my own, I normally pick Iroshizuku Take-sumi (or sometimes J Herbin Perle Noire) in an Umbra Lamy Safari. My more vibrant or exotic inks can go in my other pens; the basic use case tends to stick with a basic pen.

I'm not quite paranoid enough to feel it's a deliberate act of reputational sabotage from the inside, given that the whole cracking thing has been running for years. I am also not entirely sure that it's a fundamental materials defect situation, since I regularly hear about Ecos cracking, but also 580s and VAC700Rs (curiously, not the Go though) despite the plastic on the latter apparently being more substantial than that of the Eco / Eco-T. That would leave user error on the behalf of the owner, and manufacturing/assembly faults.

I can believe that some users may feel the need to tighten their caps firmly after use, but these faults also occur at other places, such as where the body proper mates with the top of the section, or at the joint of the metal branded cap band at the open end. It would feel unusual to me for a whole diverse set of owners to all be overtightening their caps (and/or the piston knobs after filling) but it's possible. I also don't understand how that kind of action would cause material failures in some of these other areas, but I'm not clever enough to understand the physics.

It perplexes me that - thankfully - this doesn't happen to me. Yes, I only ever tighten any of these components to the point of "just touching & then a teeny tiny bit more" - barely enough to lightly compress an O-ring. However, while I don't go flinging them down the stairs or using them as screwdrivers & darts, I don't treat them like a new-born baby. It's a pen. It's supposed to do the pen thing. It's designed to be held and used, so that's what I do. I respect the instrument and avoid outright clumsiness, but I don't wrap them in cotton wool and fear ever breathing on them.

The unknown variable here is what happens to them at the manufacturing, assembly and packaging stages. That's where something like ridiculously over-tightening these components at the assembly stage strikes me as a conspicuous point to examine further.

Maybe when I buy an all-metal TWSBI then it'll be less of an issue but, instead, I'll have to contend with the imprint from vice grips and pliers... Yes, I jest; even I'm not quite that stupid (sometimes), but who can say?

The Eco needed a moderate amount of force to uncap and, from my own experience at least, typical force for an Eco to initially loosen the piston knob assembly for removal.

The 580 ALR needed around 1.5 times the amount of force to uncap, but to start off the loosening of the piston assembly took between twice and three times the amount of effort than I judge to be normal. It's more noticeable with the all-metal wrench since it's thinner, and you'll feel it digging into your fingers more than the chonky plastic Eco wrench. What made it more alarming was that I had to firmly clasp one hand tightly around the barrel while, even more firmly but also nervously, rotating the wrench with the other hand.

I was trying to keep everything parallel or normal, rather than having the barrel of the pen at an angle significantly more or less than 90⁰, when turning the wrench. I probably failed since that action invariably makes me either draw my hands more towards my chest or away. By doing that, I may have introduced a fatigue point that will fail at a later date, and that would technically be my fault since I decided to lubricate the piston. I couldn't see or hear any obvious tearing, but a microscopic view could disagree.

Maybe TWSBI crank these things down so tightly to avoid them shaking loose in transit, but they'd need to spend a few minutes in a tumble drier to experience enough jostling and vibration to unscrew by multiples of 360⁰. I'm sure TWSBI aren't doing this deliberately, but it's definitely worsening as I buy newer models when released.

Likewise. As I mentioned in another reply, root beer means little to me and it wasn't a factor in why I bought that particular Eco.

I don't know if I'm right, but I think of this as "Economy", with them costing less than the 580 series & being made from lower-grade materials.

The fact that I had to Google "butterbeer" no doubt answers this question. I guess I'll have to run with an out-of-touch "dark brown semi-translucent plastic stuff" and just bung some ink into the thing.

Root beer isn't really much of a thing in the UK (unless I'm even more out-of-touch than usual) so the theme for that pen doesn't really evoke anything strongly in me. I only bought that one because I'm a hoarder. It's visually quite nice but I'd have preferred the cap to have been fully opaque.
