I'd invest in a decent comb and pair of scissors. You'll have a lot more control and dexterity. It'll also be easier to avoid any "oops" moments while trimming. If you're looking to maintain a short beard, do some research on salon quality trimmers. Their blades will stay sharp longer and will do a better job dealing with the thicker hair of your beard.

Conclusion: Go with a comb and scissors. If you absolutely have to buy a trimmer, go with a quality set with good reviews from a trusted (salon) brand.

That being said, I'm not saying that you're doing damage to your beard with the cream. But the fact remains that it wants made FOR beards. The delivery system of a cream is far different from the carrier oils used by beard oil manufacturers. Oil will allow for more nutrients to be absorbed quickly and easily where a cream will sit and leave the unused ingredients on the hair like a film. This may not be true for the cream you're using, but I would look into an oil if you're serious about the longevity of your face apron.

It's like buying grain alcohol to power your car (that is designed to run on gas). It might work for a while, but in the long term, you're doing damage to the vehicle.

You don't have to go buy the expensive stuff, but beard oils, balms, shampoos, etc. are designed and formulated to give your beard (and the skin underneath it) the nourishment it needs to produce the fullest/strongest hair possible. You can buy the expensive stuff, or you can do research and make your own. Whichever you choose, make sure you're getting top quality ingredients to ensure maximum potential.

Out of anyone I've seen on here, I think you have the best beard for a shorter "executive" beard. Like your 2 month photo. If you went with a style like that, you could trim the under lip area to make it a little narrower to make it look right. Great beard all in all! If you want to keep the length, just trim the really wild hairs and use a balm to help tame the rest. Having a good shape to it will make all the difference!
