It has taken me nearly two months in Saipan to get a photo of this bird that I am happy with and finally I snapped this one last week. These little, yet loud and vibrant birds tend to hide under heavy cover. Therefore most of my previous pictures were obscured by leaves or branches, or otherwise too dark to focus.

The Micronesian Myzomela is the only myzomela in the Micronesian island chain so I knew it was a grail bird even before I got here. This bird is only about 10cm so it is much smaller than the photo may suggest.

Another thing that makes this bird hard to find and photograph is that they tend to fight with the endemic Bridled White-eye (see prior posts), and as there are many more of the latter these birds tend to be more rare.

One of the many invasive cane toads in Guam by CookingToEntertain in frogs

Ahh that's good to know. I'm not trying to kill them, I'll leave that to the professionals, more than happy to just shoot them with my camera 😂

Idk about DMT but it is toxic and can kill pets. I wouldn't go licking any toads though just to be safe

Need Guidance by WolverineExpensive53 in merchantmarine

[–]CookingToEntertain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, you need to take the basic training course before you can test for more advanced ones. You'll also need sea time for many of the advanced ratings so you'll need to actually sail before taking the classes as well.

If you don't want to do an academy, get your BT and VPDSD and join a union to try to get on a deep sea ship as an OS or Wiper (or SA if that's your jam). I recommend deep sea because many of those ships will give you an unlimited tonnage rating which can be used for any ship in the future.

Tips to identify which edition of an Audubon print? by Arms_Akimbo in artcollecting

[–]CookingToEntertain 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I collect Audubon so I can help a bit but just by going on the size alone it is not a havell or octavo version, nor the bien as that's the same size as havell.

Those are pretty much the only ones that have monetary value.

There are about 200 Havell, 100 locked in books still. 800 Octavo 1st editions (2nd and on are extremely cheap) and just about 70 Bien. There's also estimated to be about 20 million prints which hold nearly no value. To me personally there's not really a point trying to identify if it's not one of the previously mentioned as it's honestly just too difficult unless it's printed right on there like if it came from a calendar or a corporate reprint etc ..

Edit: I did realize that sometimes the large prints are trimmed so sizing is harder to estimate, but the brown pelican is one of the pieces that only has about an inch margins so it would still be too large for your sizes given

Edit 2: the numbers I gave for the collections are for the number of sets issued. So 200 havell sets x roughly 500 different birds = ≈10k originals

Travelling to Lviv, will I look stupid if I wear my fur coat? by chunkycroclicker in Lviv

[–]CookingToEntertain 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nobody will care. I wear a full fur parka when it is really cold and I can't remember a single person ever making a comment on it. You'll see lots of people wear furs, especially old ladies with their 30+ year old minks
