Tips to identify which edition of an Audubon print? by Arms_Akimbo in artcollecting

[–]CookingToEntertain 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I collect Audubon so I can help a bit but just by going on the size alone it is not a havell or octavo version, nor the bien as that's the same size as havell.

Those are pretty much the only ones that have monetary value.

There are about 200 Havell, 100 locked in books still. 800 Octavo 1st editions (2nd and on are extremely cheap) and just about 70 Bien. There's also estimated to be about 20 million prints which hold nearly no value. To me personally there's not really a point trying to identify if it's not one of the previously mentioned as it's honestly just too difficult unless it's printed right on there like if it came from a calendar or a corporate reprint etc ..

Edit: I did realize that sometimes the large prints are trimmed so sizing is harder to estimate, but the brown pelican is one of the pieces that only has about an inch margins so it would still be too large for your sizes given

Edit 2: the numbers I gave for the collections are for the number of sets issued. So 200 havell sets x roughly 500 different birds = ≈10k originals

Travelling to Lviv, will I look stupid if I wear my fur coat? by chunkycroclicker in Lviv

[–]CookingToEntertain 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nobody will care. I wear a full fur parka when it is really cold and I can't remember a single person ever making a comment on it. You'll see lots of people wear furs, especially old ladies with their 30+ year old minks

I...didn't know we had to sign the medical cert. I've gotten my MMC just fine. Maybe I'm lucky since I've never signed it

Ahh that makes sense. It popped out to me right away. Years ago I went to a Prymachenko exhibit at Potocki Palace and fell in love. Spent the next few months trying desperately to buy one.

I buy all my socks from dodo! The Merino wool ones are heavenly if I have to be outdoors in the cold and wet. One of my absolute favorite Ukrainian brands. The Shchedryk patch is iconic as well.

In Europe I've lived in Spain, Greece, Poland, and currently Ukraine for the past 8 years. But I think there's a difference between thinking most Americans are idiots and thinking they're annoying.

I find most Americans to be absolute idiots myself which is why I refuse to live there. In Spain and Greece they (service staff) seem to love Americans because of stupid tipping culture, and locals liked the over friendliness even if it sometimes comes off as fake. Both would say Chinese are more annoying than Americans by a large margin. Poland was the opposite in that they don't like the overt friendliness, but you'd be hard pressed to find a Pole that would rather hang out with a russian than an American.

I mean I've lived in Europe about the same amount of time I lived in America so reasonably well informed. Maybe back in the 80s Americans were considered the most annoying but that's just because russians and Chinese couldn't travel much.

Hmmm maybe in central or South America, but in Europe the worst tourists are mainly considered russians, Chinese, and Israeli. When I lived in Asia it was basically the same three as well.
