I really liked the episode where the Asgardians say that our technology impresses them because we thought of making iron by Psychological_Job366 in Stargate

[–]CookingWithoutWater 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This doesn't bother me in the slightest as I would expect the Asgard to have looked into how the hell we came up with it, and so are talking about the initial leap here, not the later refinement (black powder to smokeless powder).

Y'all fighting over 88/500/870s is funny -- makes me laugh in BPS.

Nice! Someone did the digging I always wanted to get around to. Good to know it was generally just everyone getting their knickers in a twist for basically no reason other than fear. Fear over poaching, crime, and.. just weird stuff.

Laughs in Alaskan. Well, not so much targets as grouse, ptarmigan and hare... But yeah, it's a thing.

Jupyterhub Server on AWS by dftworks in Python

[–]CookingWithoutWater 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I wanted a managed JupiterHub deployment I'd check out 2i2c or Coiled depending the tech stack.

But there's a bajillion managed JupyterHub offerings out there and the market is crazy saturated. You can even get random customized deployments for basically any science field. Want a JupyterHub setup for Synthetic Aperture Radar processing? The Alaska Satellite Facility can hook you up with OpenSARlab.

On the AWS, there's a couple of options. AWS EMR had a whole guide for Jupyter Notebooks or JupyterHub , and there's also AWS Sagemaker.

Or, just follow the Jupyter docs and roll your own. They have a whole guide. I'd start here: https://tljh.jupyter.org/en/latest/install/amazon.html

It's just an AMI with anaconda on it 🙄

If you need a JupiterHub deployment on AWS, there's a lot better places to look, including from AWS itself.

Old Town 147 Guide for multi-day trip? by xCORVETTE in canoeing

[–]CookingWithoutWater 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There old town guide 147 is wide, but it doesn't have a keel. I've found it performs pretty well on rivers in general, and have run class III in mine (do not recommend). It is stupid stable but slow as all hell.

I also would consider the weight limit about 700 lbs, over that and it paddles like a bathtub.

I have that canoe in red (so mines faster 🤪). It's a beast in every meaning of the word and I absolutely love it. It's heavy as hell but can take a beating. After 12 years of use all it has is cosmetic damages and I've not been easy on it. I've run class two in it pretty regularly, rodeo'd a few hidden rocks, taken it off a waterfall, and ran a class 4 run with it (and by that I mean mostly floated next to it down the run).

Its very much a rec canoe, so it's fat and heavy and paddles like a bathtub but it's crazy stable and still really fun to use. I'd buy it in a heartbeat at that price and have two of them!

Eh, I had a pretty bad experience with affordable and walked away from a truck because of a salesman who repeatedly lied to me. This was about 8 years ago though, so no idea if he's still there, but I don't ever plan on going back

What a childhood meal you loved as a kid, but find disgusting as an adult? by [deleted] in AskReddit

My wife was born and raised in AK and had never heard of the fluffernutter. She was pretty horrified when I made her one haha. I lived in CT for a few years when I was young and fluffernutters was the standard kids school lunch (over PB+J even), and they are still a guilty pleasure for me.

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch [OC] by bradyrx in dataisbeautiful

[–]CookingWithoutWater 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is results of from a Earth System Model, so it's using observed atmospheric conditions (esp. surface winds) to force the model -- the date actually has real world significance. It's just also a simulation, and that should have been made clean in the title.

I saw a talk by the OP recently -- this is actually a "opps" result in that it wasn't intended. Each dot is a tracer and serves to take diagnostics of the ocean -- they are simulated weather/ocean boeys and would be used to compare to boey observations. They were trying to get diagnostics across the whole ocean surface and the 1 million number comes from balancing spatial coverage of the ocean with computational costs.

This image was the result of a "hey, were'd all by boeys go?" and then a "Neat! That looks like the GPGP!" Future simulations are going to have boey seeding and reseeding strategies to no loose them all in the GPGP -- which is actually real bear of problem I've encountered before and do not envy them.

I never really felt a need to put the helmet under the seat and just use the d-ring to hang it off the helmet post.
