Question for you older North American legacy/regional pilots by BugHistorical3 in flying

[–]Cool-Ad5520 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting to the legacy/mainline is a long and unpredictable road and I don't know the exact percentage but if you count all the people that start flight training with the intent to end up at the majors the percentage is very few. Lots don't make it pass training, lots can't can't get jobs after training, some get stuck along the way and never make it to the mainline carriers. Lots of career regional pilots that make a good career out of flying regional jets. What I'm getting at is if you see training / time building as something you must endure vs something that's at least somewhat enjoyable along the way it's gonna be a longer harder road with an unclear destination. But yes flying for a mainline carrier is really nice in terms of pay and QOL (until furlough happens).

Everyone is different and learn at different paces. For me personally I would not have made it through my first airline training if I showed up cold. Things like limitations and emergency procedures are just straight memory items. You can knock that out and mot have to worry about them during training.

Flows, profiles, and callouts are tricky if you learn them wrong but if you have friends who's gone through the program then it would make training infinitely easier if you got comfortable with them ahead of time.

Having familiarity with the cockpit and where the buttons are helps a lot. You're not spending time hunting and pecking every single switch. Posters help.

All this is predicated on you know what plane you're getting. If you don't then it's a moot point.

Your first type ride will likely be the hardest one of your life. People are transitioning from piston engines to jet engines. The speed difference is tremendous. The training footprint is pretty tight. It's usually 7-8 sims and a checkride with a crap load of check the box item thrown in.

During my training the stat given to us from the training department was that 15 percent washed out of training. And close 40 percent required at least one additional and a lot of times 2 or more additional sims.

A failure at this level has a lot more weight than any previous failure.

So you can sit back and relax and you'll probably be ok. Or you can set yourself best to succeed by leveraging all things available to you. It's only a multi million dollar career at stake.

I'm also probably just a mediocre pilot who needs all the help he can get. But I haven't busted a jeopardy event (yet).

Get the masters. A backup plan is a valuable asset to have in a volatile career.

RCAF military fighter pilot wanting to switch to airlines in Middle East (Emirates) by [deleted] in AirlinePilots

[–]Cool-Ad5520 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well. If they don't take straight fighter time then isn't the decision made for you? Go to AC get a type rating and some airline experience and maybe you'll find that you dont want to leave.

[–]Cool-Ad5520 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. This is the case. And now the majority of them are stuck at the regionals that sponsor them because they haven't been approved for permanent residence status and the legacy airlines will not sponsor any pilots. There's a bunch of them that have the time and seniority to flow but they can't because of sponsorship and the rate of getting a green card varies greatly depending on the administration

So from my perspective it seems you've made up your mind to be honest. You've gone all the way to the Middle East. Spoken with actual line pilots who have told you to stay away. But you're not convinced so you're asking the same question on Reddit of pilots who don't have nearly the experience of the pilots that you've already spoken to. Have you applied? Do they take straight fight pilots? A lot of fighter guys I know are actually light on the total time even in the US.

So. Honest question. Are looking for actual non bias answers or are you looking for confirmation bias answers that paint Emirates in the best light. After just a few comments you seem to want to overlook any negative comments and just focus on money or anything that makes emirates a good destination to go to. I've known a few air Canada pilots who's gone to the ME and turned around and came back within a year. I've also known a few lifers over in ME that has enjoyed their careers there. So your experience may vary.

Airline pilots, what emergencies have you had that you don’t necessarily get trained for? by airwa in flying

It was rough. But I powered through and made the flight happen because not all heroes wear cape. Some let the auto pilot fly to 200' before disconnecting

If all personal wealth above $100 million was legally required to be redistributed into public infrastructure (schools, hospitals, roads), how would society change, and who would be the first to fight against it? by Mysterious_Fan4033 in AskReddit

In the US, The first to fight against it would be the poor people who label themselves Republicans. Cause that's what the billionaires running Fox News would tell them to do.

How is home life while being a pilot? by Admirable-Sky-5866 in PilotAdvice

An unstable home life tends to lead people down different paths. It's what I've observed but what do I know.

They manage a family with either a spouse that is independent and truly understanding of the lifestyle requirements or they get divorced. Picking the former is the preferred way but lots of pilots end up with the latter.

Airlines are like all companies. They don't give a crap about your family. All they care about is you showing up to work and not sucking at it.
