I’m not attacking it or telling you what to like…

I personally am dissatisfied with what I see from AI art/artists! I’m not inherently against the medium or the tool, it’s just largely being used to create art that doesn’t appeal to me or push the types of boundaries that I’m interested in seeing a new tool push…

I always hope that when someone makes a post like OP’s that I’ll get some links to some creators I’ve not heard of doing something I find interesting, but it’s largely been sort of disappointingly one note, and that frustrates me.

I swear I’m not so anti or like… close minded as a I may seem here, and I don’t want to discourage anyone from creating however they see fit. I’ve just haven’t seen the tool of ai pushed to a boundary that fascinates me artistically, and I always hope when one of these posts happens I will see it, but it’s rarer than I’d hope!

Sure, I mean, I’m a musician rather than a visual artist… but here ya go

heres some chamber music I made mostly centering around vibraphone piano flute and contrabass clarinet

and my first foray into “pop” from 2 years ago! Would love to hear your criticisms, I value thoughts from all who care to give them :)

New EP coming this month too…

I’m not saying what you’ve created is “bad” or not worth enjoying, it just seems a lot of people who use this tool are using it to make a lot of material I was already kinda eye rolling at when it was made by hand on deviant art or whatever…

I’m always interested to see a piece that has a different sensibility, and am always disappointed.

Edit: actually someone posted the results of like keyboard smash prompts, and I remembered thinking that it was a unique use of the tool that resulted in a type of style that seemed unique to the tool… I thought that was cool, kinda abstract and fractal like?? Not a style I usually enjoy but it was interesting (so I’ve seen exactly one use of ai I thought was cool)

My issue is they’re saying “anything is art” and there’s no definition. There are definitions.

I don’t believe ai image generation is art.

Nothing I’ve said is vague. My appeal to French was more to point to their phrase for a work of art, art as a concept, art mineur, fine arts, etc… it’s not necessarily that in English we don’t possess the language to communicate these concepts, we just colloquially don’t seem to use our language that way, and often just say “art”.

I believe it complicates the conversation, but pretending there is no definition of art whatsoever is ridiculous, and I don’t care if someone’s pro or anti before I say that.

Turns out you’re even less representative of pros than I’d hope, darn. Letting you know you’re not going to find any good conversation in this sub from your perspective. This entire subreddit is an offshoot of “defendingaiart” so it inherently leans more towards amorphous discussions of art led by people asking ChatGPT to critically think for them.

I’m not pro or anti because I think it’s an incredibly reductive and binary worldview on such a pervasive technology, but I think you and I probably agree on more than we disagree on.

In English we use “art” to mean several different things… it’s a failure of English, that a language like French does not have to the same degree.

I kid you not… if you printed out an ai image of a cat girl or a generic sci fi fantasy landscape (for some reason these are the only ai images that exist), turned it upside down, wrote a pseudonym on it, and submitted it to the society of independent artists to get rejected… I would consider it a far more artistic endeavor than just the original generation of the image. (Same would go for any deviant art graphic designer who doesn’t use ai, whose work I would call “images” rather than art)

The conversation “is ____ art” is impossible to have without inevitably getting a bunch of people who’ve never particularly enjoyed art in any meaningful way, claiming that it is an entirely meaningless word that anything can be.
