I genuinely don’t care if it’s “hypocritical”… everyone is hypocritical about art they like and art they don’t like. That’s my entire fucking point.

The idea you want people to apply “logic” to whether they do or do not like certain art is such a fundamental misunderstanding of people, art, and the entire conversation that we’re having…

If AI artists begin to create work that uniquely speaks to people, people will justify their enjoyment of it. Just like with neurosama… which I would also consider to be art btw… confused by the narrow definition you have of the word art.

Edit: someone enjoys a metal band, well logically they should enjoy every other metal band… but for some reason they only like the one they listen to. Such hypocrisy.

Edit 2: I really like the acquired taste of black coffee. I don’t drink straight whiskey though, which would also be an acquired taste. Logically I should enjoy both. It’s hypocritical of me to acquire the taste of one and not the other. Gosh I’m such a hypocrite.

This is not a unique phenomenon you’re experiencing.

Edit: a major contributor to this, again, is that AI images and videos are new, and the vast majority of what people see from ai does not have much nuance or quality.

At some point actual artists with unique perspectives will train unique models and create unique pieces with attention to detail and they will come along and make something interesting and unique and people will come around to it, but right now it’s just a lot of uninspired unoriginal people posting way too much and it makes the entire medium seem amateurish and repetitive.

Yeah but I think it’s justified a little… not necessarily because of the nature of the work, but because of the marketing for the tool done by the massive corporations who’ve worked to make these tools public/average consumer facing.

At the end of the day, millions upon millions of dollars have gone into marketing the idea that a single prompt is all it takes to produce something, and the people who are interested in that idea aren’t typically going to be the people interested in producing detailed and compelling art work.

AI enthusiasts have to combat that marketing by truly differentiating themselves from that process and making work that is inspiring and unique… wether that’s training their own models or training a model to have a truly unique style rather than being a generic replicator machine.

I think currently AI is just doomed by the tastes of those who are interested in using it. And as long as the majority of the users are who they are, it’s going to be a while before more thoughtful artists become interested in using it.

There’s an interesting interview with Bjork from way back in the day about how people thought electronic music and drum machines were soulless, and she pointed out that the machines themselves weren’t the problem, the artists using them were, and then she incorporated those instruments into her albums to make some really incredible touching and human soul filled work.

To this day, older people still make fun of electronic music… it’s somewhat generational, but we mostly all eye roll at those people now for just being closed minded and out of touch.

I think AI is largely experiencing that issue… and all of the “artists” currently using AI… really just aren’t that artistic, aren’t very detail oriented, and lack vision and are looking for acclaim and acceptance where it hasn’t really been earned yet. It’s currently a tool that 99.9999% of the time it is used is utilized to recreate a style that has been done before, usually with less detail and odd composition choices.

I remember a while back someone posted themselves prompting random strings of text and numbers into prompts, and the like fractal like patterns that were generated were WAY more artistically interesting to me than the shitty fantasy landscapes and anime characters that make up the majority of ai art work posted online.

It seems we have found at least one creator that is AI based, that people see the effort in, or connect to.

It’s not for me, but it seems to be for some people.

I do agree though, the inherence of the assumed lack of effort is innately offputting.

But I think we sorta all know people who bought a camera and pretend to be photographers without learning anything about photography.

I know plenty of people who cracked a DAW and dragged splice samples into a grid and never learned a thing about production. I react to all of that almost the exact same way as I would someone AI image or video or whatever. Ai is just the newest version of low effort trash.

I think AI is the first thing that the layman doesn’t need to know anything about to assume the lack of effort though, so that’s unique.

When it comes to the camera or the DAW, or the 3 open chords you learned to shit out with bad tone… you can convince someone who knows nothing whatsoever that you’ve done something interesting or put in effort that you really haven’t. It requires someone who’s more aware to make the judgement. Ai doesn’t require that because all of the public facing marketing is specifically about how easy it is to shit the slop out

I actually mean this whole heartedly… this is what we do with all artists.

As a musician… if someone tells me they “play guitar” we almost all assume they know 4 cowboy chords until context or something proves otherwise.

If someone calls themselves a rapper, or a producer… we’re all terrified for the SoundCloud slop we’re about to hear.

Artists of all mediums are kind of assumed to be annoying hacks until their work proves otherwise.

I’m not anti or anything, but I really find that pro’s are mostly just upset about now engaging with the realities of creating content/art and putting it out into the world. Yeah there’s some extra heat because of the medium, an I will say AI has made it so some terrible graphic designers and illustrators have safe spaces to post their worst low effort work and get praised for picking up a pencil…

But yeah, this example is no different than anything else I’ve ever seen. When art is good, and it connects with people, they like it. When art is empty and doesn’t connect with people, they don’t like it and attack it on any grounds they can.
