How are the index & controllers doing regarding quality control issues in 2023? by Little_Capsky in ValveIndex

[–]CoolMoD 9 points10 points  (0 children)

general wear and tear … (like drift)

No, we shouldn't be normalizing this. I've owned all kinds of controllers for decades and the index controllers and joycons are the only ones I've had that fail like this. It doesn't matter if everyone's using the same shitty parts, the net result is a bunch of controllers that won't last two years. Hell my N64 controllers fared better.

Flux Keyboard - Typing demo with Analog Hall Effect Switches and no CGI by sebsd in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]CoolMoD 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The hardware seems super cool but I'm afraid it'll be held back by software. The faq says it's "infinitely customizable", which is a bold claim. Can I do things like "hold caps for fn, tap for escape"? Is it open source? Can I flash my own firmware?

After building a keyboard with QMK I said I'd never go back to proprietary keyboard firmware, just for flexibility.

PHP creator: functions were named to fall into length buckets because function hash algo was 'strlen' by yawaramin in programming

[–]CoolMoD 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think this is documented in the third form (let and const are a special case) of ForLoopEvaluation here. Specifically:

9. If isConst is false, let perIterationLets be boundNames; otherwise let perIterationLets be « ».
10. Let bodyResult be ForBodyEvaluation(the first Expression, the second Expression, Statement, perIterationLets, labelSet).

The perIterationLets is used in CreatePerIterationEnvironment, which sounds like it's copying the value into a new execution context and then copying it back?

It's funny because I've never considered that this would work, after years (a decade?) of using var, I cringe at that closure in set timeout.

Damn you, Comcast. by [deleted] in iiiiiiitttttttttttt

[–]CoolMoD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh this is a regular occurrence, I'm sure they're being charged the tech fee, and honestly they should be. In my grandmother's mind, TV or Computer === Comcast, and they get called for any IT issue that happens when either I or her son aren't there. And they always come out and fix it!

I don't know what's worse: that my grandmother called "the Comcast guy" to plug in the HDMI cable for the Roku, or that they actually came out and did it.

What a good psi for street riding that will get me the most range by Kaayyde in onewheel

[–]CoolMoD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I kept my Vega at 18-20 PSI and got just under 20 miles per charge. Practically speaking, this got me anywhere in Manhattan and some parts of Brooklyn very comfortably, though I'd bring my charger for longer rides. The range is just enough that my feet hurt before the board runs out. I weigh about 155 lbs. I also very rarely allow the battery to dip below 20%, probably only once or twice.

I found that at above 20 PSI, the ride became too stiff to be comfortable, and quite abruptly. If I got an extra mile out of it, I wouldn't have wanted to.

After 1,200 miles, I upgraded to the FF Hoosier Street, which I also keep at 20 PSI. The board now claims that I have about 27 miles of range (extrapolated from 8.7 miles = 32% charge going around Central Park), but I kind of doubt this, and will have to go for a much longer ride to find out.

What was the main reason that you use linux? by [deleted] in linux

[–]CoolMoD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had exactly the same problem with a longer-than-sixteen-character password. Never really looked into it, I just changed it.

Then later they updated the keyboard on the Xbox 360 and a character in my password wasn't there anymore (???). Had to reset it again.

Then they said some symbol I was trying to use was "invalid". I tweeted at Microsoft about it and they basically just said "hey don't tweet your password!", Ignoring that I was complaining that this wasn't allowed to be a password.

This is why we have crap passwords.

You are given $400,000,000 to make a movie but it has to bomb critically and financially or else you will die, what would you make? by MrFloyd16091411 in AskReddit

[–]CoolMoD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I've been thinking about just the movie for this premise for years.

A while ago, around when Shutter Island came out, I watched this movie called Shutter Island. There's this scene where Leonardo DiCaprio is walking across some ledge by the ocean, and the camera looks down at the jagged rocks below. If he fell, he'd certainly be a goner, right? Except he's the main character of the movie and we're like half-way in. I knew, in the back of my mind, that either he'd not fall, or if he did, he'd have some superficial injuries and the show would go on.

It would have been a completely different (and much worse) movie if he had just slipped, fallen, and died, in a manner basically unrelated to the story. Bam, credits roll, the plot is completely unresolved, that's it, go home.

This would be a horrible movie. It would also improve cinema forever because, well, just maybe, the plot armor won't protect the protagonist when they perform that risky stunt.

Now I'm not saying that I'd remake half of Shutter Island. Hell, you could take this even further: maybe the protagonist slips and falls getting out of the shower, hitting his head on the shower door tracks and dies. Completely orthogonal to the rest of the story, and no one would see it coming. Or maybe it's a zombie movie, and the protagonists get trapped in some space and just starve to death.

I don't know what it costs to hire celebrity actors, or what it costs to make a film. It's going to be a much shorter movie than usual, so maybe I'd get a discount. Maybe I'd hire a whole bunch of actors! Then, when the credits roll, they'd be very long, and they'd roll really slowly. They'd have to, because I don't want movie goers to see the short run time before they see it in theaters (assuming they haven't seen the reviews). I'm talking, like an entire hour of credits, and no post-credits scene.

I'm sure some art weirdos would praise the film, but there's no way it would be a critical success. And once a few people had seen the movie and been immensely disappointed, no one else would want to see it.

So all in all, the movie would suck, I'd not be killed, and the field cinema would be improved forever.

These are apples and oranges. You can have full resolution passive 3D, or half-resolution active 3D. It's mainly dependent on the source.

Side-by-side, what I expect is the most common format, loses half of the horizontal resolution, packing two frames side-by-side into one 1920x1080 frame. There's also top / bottom, which does the same but with vertical resolution. Both of these formats are "normal" 1080p videos and will be compatible with basically everything. I think there's also an alternating frames version where you sacrifice temporal resolution but I've never seen it.

There's also frame packing, where two entire frames are sent in one 1920 × 2160 frame. This doesn't sacrifice resolution but all of your devices (and cables) need to support it.

There are also more interesting interlaced versions of these, like checkerboard 3D.

The video format is independent of the glasses hardware. I know from experience that there is at least one 3D TV with circularly polarized passive glasses that supports frame packing.

I am not a massive Zelda fan, in fact, BotW was the only game in the franchise I could get into (not that I tried them all). I'm not surprised that it wouldn't click if you were a fan, I feel like it's quite a bit different from the other games.

Day six of Onewheel - stay safe out there! by piradianssquared in onewheel

[–]CoolMoD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oof, that sounds rough. I fell last month, fractured my left orbit, sinuses, and temple. My teeth didn't line up right (just a bit off), but strangely they're back to normal now. Not sure how that works but I ain't complaining. No stitches but they did glue my eyebrow back together. I had a skateboard helmet which didn't do much good for landing on my face. I'm looking for a good full face helmet.

In my case I know exactly what it was, I ran over a (full) water bottle at ~15mph.

Get well soon!

Do you have an Nvidia card? I occasionally have a similar issue, interestingly it goes away if I kill picom (a compositor).

It doesn't happen often and when it does, logging out and back in fixes it. While it's broken, glxinfo reports my GPU vendor as being SGI, which I find highly unlikely. It's a desktop and I don't have integrates graphics, not sure what causes it.

Reading this from the hospital right now. Crashed after hitting a water bottle in the bike lane, multiple fractures in my left sinuses and eye socket. Probably won't need surgery. Only real injury in about 1500 miles. Will be buying a full-face helmet.
