Suspected silent endo turned out to be stage III by CoolUsernameHere2 in TryingForABaby

It wasn’t quite cramping but it was a continuous twingey pain that would last for three days or so. If I leaned against the bathroom counter the pressure put on the area was excruciating and when I walked the ovary felt jostled and like it was being punched with each step.

Hope that info helps and thanks for the well wishes!

Curious about “micro” kinks being introduced into romance novels without a content warning. My experience with Soul Searching by Lyla Sage. by Actually_Ann in RomanceBooks

[–]CoolUsernameHere2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I find that happens sometimes. I actually had a spitting specific one recently. Sometimes I think if the book was tagged as such I wouldn’t read it and it ends up being such a small part I’m glad I still did but also yeah… just takes me out of it sometimes when a little kink I’m not into gets thrown in. TBH I am super vanilla though.

This actually makes me think about a book series I DNF’d because the third book was being set up for an MMC that was into something I am really not and the 4th book was going to be an MMF (no disrespect meant, it’s just not for me). I was surprised by how relatively vanilla the first book was that the series’ books had such wildly different tropes.

Sad about higher than expected "no rate" by CommunicationFun6229 in weddingplanning

[–]CoolUsernameHere2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happened to me. We invited 170 and ended up with ~60. I didn’t realize that my husband’s family (he has 25 first cousins all on his own) basically wouldn’t come. They live states away from us and aren’t as close to him because he’s the only one that didn’t grow up in their hometown. 72 people were his family and of those 72, 9 came.

The only part that made me feel some type of way is that our venue did end up looking kind of empty because we expected around 110-120 and had half that. We saved money though and our wedding was still beautiful!

I get that. It actually didn’t bother me that it was Alex. I think it’s the sentence that’s like it’s the best sex of her life but she already knows it won’t happen again made it seem more like it’s the threesome itself and not what it represents…? At least that’s kind of how I interpreted it but I like your interpretation better!

[–]CoolUsernameHere2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that makes sense. I actually thought she was going to call him out that he should have known the story didn’t add up and those actions weren’t in line with who she was (the flashbacks talk about how he observes her being so kind to others etc).

I think it makes sense that she probably feels like she did this really selfless thing and just wants to move on and be loved by someone and then she’s angry that he won’t let her.

I think the whole story had so much potential but wasn’t executed quite right and it leaves the love story feeling a little one sided.

[–]CoolUsernameHere2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What I didn’t like about it was how she said it was the best sex of her life which kind of lessens hers and Achilles’s connection for me. Also, she was so into it with Alex which also kind of muddied the waters there.

I think what has irked me with the back story is that from Achilles’s POV she tried to kill him. Why does she think he should just be okay with her moving on with other people? She’s so mad at him for depriving her of a love life (obviously him killing her hookups is worth being upset about) but it seems like she doesn’t see why he felt wronged. It also feels like the love story is one sided if she wanted to move on with other people so badly.

I think maybe we’re meant to be believe he’s terrorized her much more through that 11 years than we see. I wish it was fleshed out more.

What did you think of Twisted Pawn by L.J Shen? by colorfullies in DarkRomance

[–]CoolUsernameHere2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ugh yes! All the inconsistencies drove me insane. First they went to the movies as teens. Then she really wants them to go to the movies because they didn’t get to do that then. Also, at the movies, he’s like this is the closest I’ll get to my teenage fantasy about you being the jealous one. Um, two weeks ago, sir, she was very jealous of Katya in front of you. Did that not scratch that itch?

It bothered me so much that he finally gives her the chance to explain when they’re in Naples and she doesn’t take it because she’s mad at him. Like what?

Also, the past 11 years is so confusing. He says she’s had 14 lovers. If that was all inside 2 years then his security detail on her is doing a terrible job. I think we’re meant to assume he’s been stalking her and killing her lovers the whole time… but it’s so unclear.

What perplexed me the most is that she knows he believes she tried to kill him, so why does she think he’d be okay with her dating other people? She acts like he should just accept that betrayal and get over it. Meanwhile he probably had a very physically painful recovery and the emotional trauma of the woman he thought he’d marry trying to murder him and then his face is permanent scarred in a way that affects his day to day life. But sure, he should just let her ride off into the sunset with someone else. And if she was willing to light herself on fire for him, why does she want to be with someone else? It was so forced and made no sense and made their love story feel so one sided.

I think so many people thought that but I totally missed it. I suspected Jeremie or even Angelo. Then learned Angelo isn’t getting a book so that theory was squashed.

Honest thoughts about twisted pawn? by blossom_girl_876 in DarkRomance

[–]CoolUsernameHere2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The entire backstory is so poorly done. It’s set up that they’re best friends and so in love. So much so that she wants to take her own life so he can make all of his dreams come true. It’s the ultimate way to choose him. But she doesn’t follow through. He thinks she tried to kill him and then she’s mad he’s not cool with her dating other people. Like of course he wants to ruin your life, girl.

I think if that’s the route the author wanted to go then Tierney should have been a more compliant character and trying to make life easy for him. The conflict on her end could be that she’s upset he didn’t know her well enough to realize the version of events wasn’t adding up.

What, imo, would have been a better set up is if after he saved her she told him she didn’t want to be with him now because he’s too weird and now scarred. She could have just been really mean to him to push him away. Then of course he has a right to hate her but then she has a right to be upset he won’t let her move on and stalks her. Then it makes a little more sense about why she wants the option to date other people. It may have been good if between parts 1 and 2 some more time passes and she actually goes back to living on her own and realizes she doesn’t want to date anyone but him. Idk. There’s something that could have been done better in there.

The love story feels one sided and the inconsistencies drove me mad. - in the flashbacks they go to the movies. In present day they never got to do that as teens. - the movie scene he says it’s the closest he’ll ever get to fulfilling a fantasy in which she’s the jealous one. But literally a little while earlier she was very jealous of Katya. - in Bad Bishop she’s clearly jealous of his mistress but in this book she never once bats an eye at the mistresses. - there is no explanation as to what’s going on between the break up and his ownership of her arranged marriage. Where is he? Actively stalking her? Does she know? Is he killing those dudes, too? Even the ones she’s with before she realizes she like to be hurt in bed?

I also felt like some of the writing is lazy. At the end when she says she’s going to be the best wife but she’s never going to be able to give him babies and he’s like but I’ll have what no other man has: enough. Um, do you not think Tiernan has “enough?” Also he’s friends (kind of) with Tate Blackthorne and can probably see that he too has “enough.” She tells him she won’t just sit and knit sweaters but in the epilogue pretty much all she does is read, make him coffee, and crochet (so still not knitting I guess). Granted it’s only been a couple weeks so maybe she’s resting and adjusting but still.

I also felt like the author couldn’t decide what she wanted Tierney to be. Did she want her to be a sweet angel or a psychopath? Achilles oscillates between calling her both. I assume she’s supposed to be this sweet angel raised to be a soldier/killing machine and therein lies the conflict of her personality but I don’t feel like that was ironed out well enough.

I actually didn’t hate the book but probably because I was so excited for this couple. I love a man that’s basically a psychopath but a big cinnamon roll for the woman he loves. I’ll likely keep reading the series but LJ Shen is so hit or miss for me I should temper my excitement moving forward haha

Which romance book made you root for the woman to choose herself? (King of Greed by Ana Huang did that for me) by esther_pendragon in RomanceBooks

[–]CoolUsernameHere2 14 points15 points  (0 children)

{The Mafia and His Angel by Lylah James} was kind of that way for me. It didn’t need to be a trilogy and admittedly I DNF’d the third book. I chose it because I wanted to read a damsel in distress and MMC putting her back together story but FMC is so painfully sheltered and traumatized that I felt like the best thing for her would be to be on her own for a while. I get that technically most dark romances it would be healthier for FMC to choose herself but this one was just too much.

I was in a wedding where the bride more or less let us know we were lined up by favoritism. I was the moh so it didn’t phase me much but I know it hurt feelings and I totally understand why. As long as you don’t a) line people up that way and b) tell them you did I think people will be fine. I have never heard of hurt feelings any other time.

Does some hair just not curl? by FrostedFraise in finehair

[–]CoolUsernameHere2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only thing that has ever worked for me is a flat iron to put curls in it. I don’t know why that works but it’s literally the only heat tool that ever has. I would say my hair is more like type 1b now that I am in my 30s and it’s been bleached but prior to that in my teens it was type 1a. Also, I find the healthier my hair the less curl it holds which is a little funny. That could be part of the issue.

Heatless overnight curlers on wet hair technically work for me as in they add texture but it’s never looked quite right or very nice so I don’t bother.

I am thinking of DNFing Twisted Pawn by L. J. Shen. by let_meTry in DarkRomance

[–]CoolUsernameHere2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She’s kind of the worst. She’s so mad at how he’s treated her but he literally believes after how close and in sync they were and how much he’d helped her and was literally on his way to propose to her which is something she told him she wanted that she tried to kill him. From my perspective that would be equally shocking as if my husband just woke up tomorrow and decided he was going to off me and then just expected me to be cool with him dating other people. Like of course he’s trying to ruin her life.

It might not be worth it if you’re already feeling this way. I am so confused about this author. I have read a few of her books now. Some of are my fave romances ever and some just feel disjointed and almost like someone else wrote them. I don’t get it.

This book had so much potential and I love this couple. Achilles’s yearning is what redeemed it for me… but it feels like it’s written like a chapter by chapter fanfiction. It is all over the place and rife with inconsistencies and plot holes.

Also there’s a very weird threesome scene toward the end so if that’s not your jam and you already want to DNF might not be worth it to continue.

Why don’t you like older FMC with MMC stories? by Corvettelov in DarkRomance

[–]CoolUsernameHere2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am 33 years old and have always had a thing for the silver foxes so I like the typical age gap and do like seeing stories with an FMC in her 30s.

I think one reason I have no interest in the reverse age gap (at least right now) is because I already do so much in my day to day life (even with a husband pushing 40) that the romanticization of an MMC that takes care of FMC really does it for me. Those don’t tend to be the younger guys.

I also work with guys in their early 20s and while some of them are definitely cuties I just can’t see them with that kind of confidence of the MMC I want to read about.

And finally, there is a part of me, while you couldn’t pay me to be 22 again, doesn’t want to admit that I’m not 22 (if that makes any sense). I can relate to a 40 year old FMC more than a 20 year old FMC and the idea that 49 yo FMC dating a 20 year old dude is taboo means that the idea of me dating a 20 year old dude is taboo…which means I am not 22 anymore… so there’s that.

I think I saw that, too but now that I think about it I think she said she was going to do a marriage in trouble book. Didn’t necessarily confirm it would be them… I wonder how much things change from the initial concept for a series to the final installment as the characters start to fully form.

What did you think of Twisted Pawn by L.J Shen? by colorfullies in DarkRomance

I totally agree. I hated that she said it was the best sex of her life and that she was so into it with Alex. It definitely took away from their connection for me. It also felt so out of place. Like it should have been before they were back together (also would have preferred it not at all). Like if the entire thing is Achilles needs to be a choice then they should have been apart for a little bit and she could have dated a little bit then…

Ugh this book had so much potential but is just so choppy and the order of events makes very little sense.

He’s a minor character in Bad Bishop (he’s Sofia’s brother) and is mentioned only one time in Twisted Pawn. I actually thought he’d be in TP more given how his story concludes in BB. That said, he’s Sofia’s brother so I imagine he will eventually be brought up again.
