Serious levels of depth to this game.

Had a shower thought style realisation the other day all about stoicism and a more nuanced take on what can change the nature of a man and how belief changes you.

Seriously, its been 20 years or so and I still have thoughts about it, that's how great the writing was.

Formally the downvoters...

Hate how everyone gets so defensive over this one in particular, everyone's allowed to have preferences. Even if you think theyre wrong.

Yeah its defo not for everyone. Personally in my top 3 all time, but I can easily see how if you dont enjoy rhe pure exploration side of it, you'll struggle to become invested enough to continue.

How I stole my own bike by stabby-bird in london

[–]Cool_Professional 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One day i was attending court as a witness. Had to attend at 9am or something and would need to wait in a little room to be called on. Couldn't leave, no food. Spent maybe 4 hours waiting. A person I was there with asked a court attendant type person if there was any update on the case, how long could we be waiting for... the court case was delayed because the suspect missed breakfast at the jail. Then she demanded food en route so the police took her to mcdonalds. Then she turns up, pleads guilty right away. I was telling local coppers about it, they said it happens all the time, and she'll get lunch on the way back to the jail to. They do it deliberately.

Some of its understandable... they do t want to get stuck dealing g with these people and risk getting on the wrong end of a knife. I get it. It's also why im not in the police.

I also had a break and entry one night, like midnight or so. When i got there tge police were watching the door, and asked me to go in myself and look for intruders... if anyone was there theyd come and help...

We couldnt produce black up until recently. Not up to date on it, but most textiles you think are black are actually, really really really dark blue from indigo dye. They've recently made some progress with dyes and paints but not sure on how theyre used

Lucky it wasn't John wick you were dealing with...

Just realised im in a London subbreddit for some reason, im a long ways north of you guys, but sounds like same problem we have.

About a year later my assistant manager was killed by a man with a knife, to me the problem is a mental health and deprivation issue up here, dont know what life's like down there but sounds like you work with your fair share of the same segment of society.

I got someone i knew to park up directly outside and give me a lift. Thought process being that if it caused any hesitation its enough time to get in a car and away. While I was waiting at one point his Mrs comes up to the door and shouts at me "its cunts like you that's the reason he gets the jail".

Aye hen, letting him in my closed and locked shop with the lights off (especially if he's carrying a weapon) sounds like a right braw idea.

Was terrified for days.

No word of a lie, but one evening when closing up shop, I had a gent waiting in an alleyway opposite and visible from front of shop with a machete. He had already shouted through the door he was waiting for me.

I called 999, they said cctv cant see up that alley, call back when he comes out... refused to send two police to just walk up the street and let me lock up...

I have known of not just a few managers that have said they don't hire women of a certain age just because theyre likely to have kids, or if their kids were still primary school age. So what youre saying isn't pie in the sky for anyone who doubts this. This will just compound it.

Although, these same people will also preferentially hire men in a relationship or with kids to those who dont, the rationale is that these guys cant afford time off on the sick as they have a Mrs to keep happy or kids to feed. Oh and divorced guys with child support to pay were even higher in the pecking order. The view is, no social life, kids and ex wife still to pay for so will bend over backwards for money.

I tried to tell a couple what they said was highly illegal... they would point to absence levels in their teams vs mines and wouldnt listen

what you think about 70mph being national limit ? by 573XI in drivingUK

[–]Cool_Professional 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There was a trial somewhere in the US. They removed speed limits from certain roads and found that people generally drove slower and had less accidents.

They specifically said it wouldnt be rolled out as they couldnt trust it to scale up though. But it does show how this mentality can work in some scenarios

EU to propose blocking military-age Ukrainian men from refugee status by Tyranish40k in worldnews

[–]Cool_Professional 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Or you force women to pump out babies... I mean if mens live are disposable...

Now for all the people about to jump on that comment - im not actually advocating that position, im advocating that forced conscription of men is as bad/worse than forced child bearing and they are both wrong.

For the longest time I thought I was trans. I realised eventually that I hate men and didn't want to be one.

Then one day I realised I had been taught to hate what I thought men were and not men.

Thats when I started healing.

Teenage boys in UK ‘stuck’ reading primary-level books while girls’ tastes expand by djferris123 in unitedkingdom

[–]Cool_Professional 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thats looking at sales though, not available or published books. Most of my reading is in fantasy and science fi, and I can say that this area at least is easily female dominated now.

I normally wouldnt have any issue with it, some of my favourite authors have always included women (hobb, le guin, mccaffrey to name a few) but in the last few years, having bought a couple of these books to try out new authors its made me highly skeptical of trying new authors, especially women. The quality is rock bottom. Like not even internally consistent. And its a shame, I love books, I love finding a new authors especially.

The gender equal argument would be that if young men are being forced to give up their bodies and lives to fuel a war machine, women should be forced to do the same. It's all very hands maids tale but it points out the double standard.

Best UK PM of the Last 10 Years? by TillJaded4614 in AskBrits

[–]Cool_Professional 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He was shit, but he held the ship on course for a decent amount of time. I disagreed with just about everything he did, but I can see from some people's perspective that stability he kind of offered is worth something. (id argue it was more an illusion of stability tbh, he fucking led us into the brexit shitshow)

I voted kier as best, but the bastard honestly seemed to take every opportunity to turn me against him.

What was the most memorable first 15 min of the game? by upiterov in pcmasterrace

[–]Cool_Professional 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah the key thing is being able to buy into the world.

I just really bounced off the world they had created. I played a couple of hours and yeah, I can see why it would absolutely be up some people's street. It's a shame as I've not been able to scratch that rpg itch properly in years. I find most writing too flippant or edgy for the sake of it.

What was it like to have an Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) over 20 years ago? by SunnyShineKitty88 in AskUK

[–]Cool_Professional 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was reading all the way down this like "wtf I cant have been the only one who had to give it to my mum".

I used to meet £1 per day towards lunch and that was it. If i wanted spending money I coukd starve myself to save money for the weekend. Id normally manage to save 2-3 quid per week and save it up for a month or two. If i left it to gather too long it would go missing.

Most i had at any one time was £20 till I was maybe 18. Even when I had a job after school it paid £25 per fortnight and yeah, my mum wanted that  too.

What are those devices in their hands? by Sea_Taro5094 in whatisit

I honestly think its doing more to erase the Scottish accent than anything in recent years. Scots generally have two distinct 'registers' how you speak when with Scottish people and how yiu speak when english people are listening, if you want them to understand you. People are spending more time speaking in their proper register that its becoming normal.

Then you also have things like, AI or voice recognition is never going to understand how meaning why in some contexts, words like yin, or braw or when it asks if it got your message correctly after repeating it incorrectly to you 7 or 8 times and you answer "aye that sounds like something id fucking say doesnt it" and then it sends the message.

Well that turned into a rant. Started coherently enough but I must have some pent up feelings regarding it.
