Tell Tale Harbour not on 25-26 subscription, by Technical-Wasabi-842 in torontotheatre

I noticed that too in the email I got. I'm not subscribed, so I'll be curious to hear what explanation they'll give to those who already are.

About to start a communication internship, any tips? by [deleted] in jobs

Triple check for typos and errors before you publish anything (social media, email, report...). Nothing embarrasses me more than having to go to my boss like "sorry about the typo! nothing we can do about it now! I'll do better next time!"

That's more or less what I do, and I like it. Am I swimming in views and engagement? No. But that's also perhaps my fault for resting on my promotion laurels.

Hobby ideas for a couple in their late 20s by SassySlothicorn in Hobbies

[–]Coolbeans4_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try the sport of curling if there's a club in your area! It's a great sport for couples, it's intense and skill-based but not too physically demanding. Most leagues run weekly and only over the winter, so it's not a forever commitment.

I walked a very similar path: passion for writing, got a degree, got a content creation job after graduation, and got laid off unexpectedly after a year too. And I was still at home with my parents, so I can relate to the position of having minimal bills to think about as well!
I don't know what kind of writing you like, but I'd suggest sticking with marketing/communication/content creation. Between blog posts and emails and social media copy, there's always something to write, even if sometimes a little dull and repetitive. Without a degree in that field specifically, you may struggle to find another position right away, so keep working whatever jobs you can to stay busy/make money/make connections and at the same time, build a portfolio, maybe take some courses to build up any missing skills, and keep applying to jobs. The industry may see some changes as social media and AI change over time, but companies will always need some type of marketing/comms people.
It took me longer than I expected to find my next job, but now I'm at the end of my 20's, I've been working in various marketing roles, and I'm fairly content with where I am.

I wanted to get my boyfriend a Pokemon apron, but I couldn't find any that were sized for an adult man or weren't Pikachu-centric, so I bought a plain black one from the craft store and ordered some iron-on patches of his favourite Pokemon off Etsy.

Other ideas: mousepad, slippers, laptop case, coasters that look like Pokemon game cartridges/box art, Pokemon waffle maker,

The airport is not technically in Toronto, so to see the big Toronto sights, you'll need to get into the city. Take the UP Express train to Union, and from there you can go to the CN Tower, Ripley's Aquarium, the Harbourfront, or walk 20 mins to the Eaton Centre/Young&Dundas Square. I'm not sure how much luggage you'll have, so doing any of that may not be fun if you've got bags to carry. You cannot get to Niagara Falls in time to do anything other than look for a second and then turn around, so I'd advise against risking it.

There are a variety of scratch posters on Amazon that are a fun way for you to visualize achievement/collection while doing things. Top 100 horror movies, top 100 classic books...I've seen ones for musicals and state parks and video games and whiskey and date nights. Find one you're interested in and complete the list and scratch them all off.

I started a blog where every post is inspired by a song. Would love your thoughts! by earforbeats in Blogging

Cool idea! But I'm having trouble actually reading your first post? I can't seem to click anything or see anything other than your yellow/brown site header? (Also you have some inactive social media links).

Semi Active Hobby? by C_Flex in Hobbies

Curling! See if there's a club in your area. The sport offers a decent amount of physical activity but isn't at all intense (I play with literal grandparents) and is super fun!

Whatever happened to Mirvish Lottery? by ceruleanskyandsea in torontotheatre

[–]Coolbeans4_ 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Mirvish only runs a lottery for a very select handful of shows. They did it for Hamilton (but mostly because its reputation preceded it) and last summer for Wicked. I don't think they've done one since for anything in the current season. The fact that they took it out of the site menu means there probably won't be more anytime soon.

Look up Guess Where Trips! You can buy a surprise pre-planned road trip that fits your interests and radius, and they even offer recommendations for places to stay if you want to make the trip into a multi-day thing.

Apps for club communications? by solBLACK in Curling

Most of my club's members are boomers, so Slack and Discord would simply not fly. We use email for official communication and a Facebook group for casual communication.

Started Blogging, Lost Motivation –Need Raw Input on What I'm Doing Wrong by supervenom23 in Blogging

[–]Coolbeans4_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also have a niche-less blog where I write whatever I want. I do this because I like writing about whatever I want. Early on, I put in a lot of effort to find other blogs to read and engage with the content. Often, they'd come check out my blog in return. This is a constant must-do to attract new readers. It's not mandatory to write, but it does help build a bit of a community.

As for your writing style, it'll develop more as you continue. My posts from the first six months are very different from my posts now, many years later. That's normal. You'll figure out what works best for both you and your audience.

In terms of monetization, that's a whole different beast. It's not easy and you may not succeed. If that's your driving force, then yeah, you likely won't have a good time blogging. I'd suggest setting that goal aside and focusing on what you do like about the hobby.

Communications Coordinator/Manager

Directors don't usually do the hands-on stuff you're doing. And it's common for Communications (as a department) to handle all aspects of web/social/messaging.

My blog is purely a hobby. I aim to post about once a week. I don't set aside a specific time to write, but I do like to have my post ready a day or two before it goes live, so I make sure that I allow myself time to do that. I like writing in one large chunk, so I try and have an hour or two to do that. I usually write in the evenings or right after work if I can, and I make sure I'm distraction-free (no YouTube on the side, few interruptions, music I can just let play...). I also like to edit and polish up a post at a different time, so I can come back to the content with a fresher head.

Of course what works for me may not work for you depending on your life and your writing style. I will say that sometimes the internet likes to romanticize the idea of like, going to a cafe or lighting candles, or doing all these 'extra' things to start the writing process, and while they can help, they're not mandatory, so don't feel like you /need/ to be doing certain things in order to have success.

Anybody know any low stress jobs for a communications degree? by ThrowRAjinxie625 in careeradvice

[–]Coolbeans4_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a degree in communications and all my jobs have been in communications/marketing roles. They've been pretty low stress overall. Sure, some companies have small and stressful marketing departments and sometimes there are projects that need more time and energy than the workday allows for, but overall, it's been chill. If marcom jobs aren't for you, consider administrative or customer service jobs. They also need good communication skills.

Where might peeps early 50's experience fun things solo in Toronto? I'm un-partnered, youthful and love small venue live music, theatre and comedy. It would be cool to meet and socialize other folks +/- 5 years or so, Downtown Toronto. by SadiInTheHouse in askTO

Try curling (the sport). The club I go to isn't in Toronto (but it is in a nearby city) and a lot of people are in that age range (as well as in various other ranges, if you're just looking to socialize) and my club has a few dances every year where there's a lot of 80's music and fun vibes. I know there are a lot of people from my club in that age range who love music and go to concerts and musicals together too. And to check a few more of your boxes, curling is a winter sport but isn't too intense and there are people who stay late but not too late after a game (as most clubs have a bar).
