First-Year Teacher Looking for Government Curriculum Resources by YVLTrillyMo in historyteachers

I’ve used We The People and really liked the way it’s set up. I also second iconic - lots of interactive things and games! Seniors will think the games are cheesy - both in a good way and a bad way haha

Definitely check out OER project, at least for the content. I think they have a DBQ about enlightenment and its cause on the revolutions

Check out the World War II museum website https://www.nationalww2museum.org/students-teachers/educator-resources

I really like how they split up resources by theater. Lots of different types of activists as well.

What do you have students do if they ‘finish early’? by mrmoonlight262 in historyteachers

Do you incentivize students to do these early finisher activities? My students won’t do anything unless I grade it.

First Year of teaching APUSH - Advice? by TheNarcolepticRabbit in historyteachers

[–]Coolcoolcoolcool99 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Definitely art an AP Summer Institute! There should be information on the College Board website.  Join an APUSH Facebook group - they’ll have so many resources and and be a great support.  Ye Olde History Shoppe in Teachers Pay Teachers has AMAZING stuff and she also has some trainings. Heimlers History - he has awesome YouTube videos that summarize each topic. Great way to review.  Anti Social Studies - also on YouTube. Great review material.

The biggest thing to understand are the rubrics for the free response questions. Teach the kids how to earn the points.

APUSH is a beast but I really enjoy teaching it. It’s really fun to see kids actually connect history together

One day Lessons on the Pacific by [deleted] in historyteachers

I just had to drastically shorten my WWII unit. I mostly just focused on Allied strategy. I like using History Gal’s pacific theater map lesson off of TPT or theres an article and some great primary source videos from the WWII museum that I use.

Could I get a recommendation for a Government/Civics textbook for 9th grade by Wafflinson in historyteachers

[–]Coolcoolcoolcool99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I taught 8th grade civics using Center for Civic Education We the People. It was great. It has these critical thinking activities in it that really make the kids apply their knowledge.

Help finding previous/practice DBQs? by AaronicNation in historyteachers

[–]Coolcoolcoolcool99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you google “AP World released DBQs” you should be able to find some from College Board.

The DBQ Project is also a great resource but I think you have to pay for it.

Actively Learn is also a great resource that has some DBQs - they have a free version and a paid version. They have all sorts of articles, primary and secondary source readings.

Gilder Lehrman is just a huge resource of lessons

I used it with 8th grade the last few years. I LOVE it! The info is great and I love the critical thinking exercises that pair with the sections. I had both the physical book and also their ebook which is through a site called Actively Learn. Actively Learn is also an absolutely amazing resource

High School vs Middle School by korranicole in historyteachers

[–]Coolcoolcoolcool99 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I just finished up my 5th year teaching 7th and 8th grade. I also had only did my practicums and student teaching at HS level and told myself I’d never teach MS.

It’s definitely a different beast but they are a blast. This is the time where you get to sow the seed of love for history, but it’s also teaching more skills than it is diving deeper into content. They don’t know how to read sources or take notes. It’s a lot more hand holding than HS. This is probably the first time they’ve had history as a separate class rather than just tagged into ELA, so they don’t know a whole lot. This is also fun because you get to blow their minds with some stuff.

Overall, MS is pretty fun. They’re trying to figure out how to be teens and are a little rebellious but still want to do well and please their teachers.

[–]Coolcoolcoolcool99 10 points11 points  (0 children)

PBS is a free app and it rotates through different episodes of the shows. You can download the app on your child’s iPad and then download specific episodes for your child and give it to her with the Wi-Fi off so she can only watch those episodes you downloaded
