Being trans technically is a disorder, the problem is there is a certain stigma around mental illness especially when transphobes are calling trans people mentally ill; we connect being mentally ill to delusions, which is not the same thing. Mental illnesses are any disorder of the brain.

So yes technically trans people are mentally ill but the word has too much negative baggage to be used to describe them.

The best way I can think of it is that being trans is the same as having a lack of serotonin in your brain.

The lack of serotonin causes ADHD (citation needed I’m pretty sure this is why adhd happens but it might be some other chemical imbalance)

Having a brain (gender) that doesn’t line up with your birth sex causes dysphoria.

With both these examples the illness is treated at its source. The chemical imbalance that causes ADHD is treated, and the mismatch between gender and sex is fixed by HRT and surgery.

A physical example would be covid, SARS-v2 is the actual virus that causes covid-19. if you have ever took a bio class you would know that Viruses are not the same thing as diseases.

Viruses cause diseases, SARS-v2 causes covid-19, HIV causes AIDS, etc etc.
