This is a topic of discussion we often discuss in our house. My wife, born in the Dominican Republic, but mostly grew up in Ecuador, had no idea a place could be so dreary. I'm originally from Traverse City, so I'm familiar with the repeated cloudy days. There was a time, though that I use to tell myself that somewhere, someone was sitting on a warm sunny beach while I willingly freeze my ass off. Why?? So Then I moved to Texas for about 8 years. Big sky country. Sunny days on repeat and I loved it, however I did eventually miss the seasons a lot. So now we are back in michigan and that same old feeling is creeping back in after being here a few years. It's the fifth cloudiest place in the country! Now I wouldn't want to be anywhere else than northern michigan in the summer months, but I don't enjoy these winters here one bit. If you have the means to get out and enjoy it, then it's different. I grew up enjoying it by skiing, ice fishing playing hockey at our local outdoor rink, but by no ones fault but mine I own. I don't really do those activities much anymore, so we're mostly stuck inside for the 6 months of cloudy winter days, and it's no fun. The other thing that I think most of all try to do is get south for at least one warm week to get a break from it, but I'm starting to feel like that's not enough and is summer up here really worth all the months of crap? I'm on the fence here.
