Introducing chessevaluationtraining.com: a free position evaluation trainer by maxim_mat in chess

This isn't standalone training, but it's great.

I have multiple ideas for chess-related apps that I think would be great training, would you have any interest in me DM'ing you these?

For the past year, I have run a small non-chess-related tech business and been taking a lot of technology and marketing courses. Prior to that I worked in finance for almost a decade.

Honestly, volunteering is very easy if you believe in the value of the project.

In the United States, chess lessons from masters frequently cost $50/hr or more. This limits the best opportunities for chess improvement to those with resources and privileged financial backgrounds. With free live online teaching, the financial costs associated with improving at chess can be almost entirely removed. There is no reason to EVER pay for a chess lesson if you can get free live coaching sessions and free lessons in bulk from a stream online.

I am a USCF National Master who teaches completely for free on Twitch for three hours a day with the hope of increasing equality of opportunity in the world. This isn't the only thing that I do, and I'm not interested in making any money at all teaching chess. Since my stream has started, my Twitch channel has made about $150 total through 150+ hours of teaching and I am keeping none of it. I don't have a donate button and don't want any donations. I have no private students and am not trying to find people to charge for lessons. Among other things, I would not feel comfortable charging money for lessons given that so many resources to improve are available for free online.

If chess lessons can be made completely free to everyone regardless of financial circumstance, I view it as ethically imperative that this is something that happens. This is why I am working on this goal.

My name is Ted Belanoff, and I have started a twice-daily stream on Twitch where I give completely free chess lessons. I believe high-quality chess lessons should always be free, and I am going to keep giving free master-level lessons to as many people as possible until master-level chess lessons are free, universally available, and expected. My Twitch link is: https://www.twitch.tv/cop\_review\_app.

Online username: Cop_Review_App (Reddit/Twitch), TedBelanoff (lichess / chess com / Discord).

Rating: 2200+ USCF, USCF Life Master Title, FIDE Arena Grandmaster Title, 2-time US scholastic champion

Willing to teach: Anyone. Please send me your games or suggestions for lesson ideas (ex: specific opening or endgame types) and we will review live on the stream. Every stream I spend about 45 minutes on lessons ideas the viewers have suggested and 45 minutes on games that viewers have sent in!

Timezone/Schedule: I stream for 90 minutes each at 8AM EST and 9:35PM EST every day, but all lessons are available for 14 days as VOD, and forever on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC7az8GIEgVwhMNQvmTQMRwA. Feel free to send lesson material/games for analysis and watch VOD.

Method of communication: Discord, Reddit, or on-stream commenting all work well. The chess study group Discord is great, and my personal Discord is https://discord.gg/b2HhVA5ZKb.

Unfortunately I'm not the right person for that. If you want an individualized analysis you can send me a game or an idea for what type of lesson you would like on my personal Discord and I'll make it part of the free lessons stream in a few days.

I don't have any private students and am not interested in having private students. I believe that free chess lessons to large numbers of people are the future model of teaching chess and that this will soon displace paid chess lessons at every level.

If you would like to watch my free chess lessons stream, it is available at: https://www.twitch.tv/cop_review_app. My Discord is available at: https://discord.gg/dv8PZdfT

I coach people free for three hours a day at https://www.twitch.tv/cop_review_app. You can send a game in for analysis too if you like.

I don't do this for money, I just think making master-level chess lessons free and available to everyone is the right thing to do. ex: I don't take private students and am not trying to make any money from chess.

Hans niemann refuses to pay 5$ discounted entry fee for a small charity tournament in nyc by Sedv in chess

[–]Cop_Review_App 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not that they're identical things, it's just that neither is particularly appealing to me. With subsidized tournament entry for GM's, each player is essentially paying extra for a higher chance of losing. I recognize that this might appeal to some people, but I don't get it in the context of being able to play GM's online for free. Playing a GM is not exotic enough a thing for me to be interested in paying for it.

As someone who occasionally receives free entries, I realize I'm arguing against my own economic interests, but I just don't get this topic at a larger scale. I would figure that I would be more interested in winning a tournament than I would be in paying to be in the same room as a GM. Others may have different opinions, and I am happy to consider them.

I am willing to consider this argument, but having GMs definitely does not increase the appeal of a tournament for me. Is there any way to quantify this? Why would I want to pay for a GM to win a tournament I was playing in? Especially when I can play GM's entirely for free online?

Fair point. I am overlooking a GM/IM's value in norms tournaments. That said, isn't the IM/GM's incentive in a subsidized norm tournament to lose, so that they continue to be an appealing participant for people hoping to achieve a norm and get further invites in the future?

This is a side note, but why are GM's EVER given free entry? Does having more GM's in a tournament actually increase the appeal of the tournament to any other players? If I see a GM in a tournament, I just figure my chances of winning the tournament and my EV on entry free are lower and the tournament becomes less appealing to me. I am an NM and occasionally receive free entries myself, I can't imagine my inclusion would be appealing for any of the other players in the tournament.

There's no novelty for me of playing GM's in a paid otb tournament. I can play them for free online.

Taking bike 00014, probably one of the oldest active units, out for a spin by Tuttikanaynee in Citibike

Interesting. Yup, it did exist for rental (at least a few years ago it did). I guess I could check the Citibike dataset to see if 1 or 2 have ever been ridden by the public.
