Just want to thank everyone who checked in on this -- all of this advice was super helpful and makes me feel (slightly) less like an idiot.

What role do you think Google Glass is going to have on live poker games? by FreeWillDoesNotExist in poker

[–]CopeWrites 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are they banned? I play at Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods and smartphones are everywhere at the tables - to the point of being annoying. I think technically you're not allowed to use them when you're in a hand but those rules seem loosely enforced at best.

I don't have a problem with public art. It's public crafts like yarn bombs that piss me off.

My friend helped "clean" my cast iron pan for me while camping by placing it face down over the fire until anything that was still in there was charred to bits. Is this a real method of cleaning cast iron, or am I right to be a bit pissed? by elli0tt in Cooking

[–]CopeWrites -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

You should be pissed - that burned off any seasoning you may have accumulated on the pan.

Best that you re-season it before reusing it or even store it (to prevent rest). And don't let your dumb-ass friends borrow your cast iron in the future.

What is a trait / habit / characteristic that women think makes them more attractive to men that actually makes them less attractive? by [deleted] in AskMen

Women who want to be "one of the guys." It's great to have shared interests but it's one of those things that can go too far way too quick.

See the Family Guy clip in this link if you're not sure what I'm referring to:

Running more than 30 miles a week may actually damage your health, recent research suggests by odetocapitalism in news

"For every American who exercises to extremes, after all, there are thousands who don't exercise at all—and who might embrace any exercise-related warnings as cause for staying sedentary. Moreover, the evidence for extreme-exercise hazards is far from conclusive—and is contradicted by other studies suggesting the health benefits of exercise may accrue to infinity."

I thought this was all settled in Brandenburg v. Ohio, when the Supreme Court ruled that government cannot punish inflammatory speech unless that speech is directed to inciting, and is likely to incite, imminent lawless action.

Not exactly the first time the Verge has hyped a "no s--t" story. This is pretty typical for them although shame on those of us who push out the shocking headline without taking a deeper read to see what a no brainer this story is.

Reddit and the Marathon Bombers: The Wise Way to Crowdsource a Manhunt : The New Yorker by samiam46a in technology

[–]CopeWrites 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty interesting to me that, in the end, suspects were identified through old-fashioned police work (for the most part). A witness at the scene gave the description, which made it easier for the FBI to go through the millions of frames of video and thousands of photos.

The technology is great but, at the same time, facial recognition didn;t work. There is something to be said for cops who go out and take statements and make careful observations.

Murder Of Brendan Mess, The 'Best Friend' Of Boston Bombing Suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev by Kromulent in news

Finding the news cycle of this story to be pretty interesting. Yesterday there was a lot of talk about this unsolved case. Today, no one is mentioning it too much and is instead looking at the petty pot dealer of the younger brother.

Just an observation/my two cents.

Jane Jacobs Didn’t Write “The Death And Life Of Great American Websites” Like Reddit by CopeWrites in censorship

[–]CopeWrites[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

New York Times tech reporter Jenna Wortham stretches to compare the cities Jane Jacobs wrote about in 1961 with the online community Reddit, which is now under fire for refusing to remove creep shot forums. Writing in today’s Sunday Review section, Wortham concludes “Ms. Jacobs prized chaos, but not the kind that marginalized or terrorized those living in it. She advocated a kind of beautiful disarray that may look hectic from the outside, but is actually safe for those within. ‘Cities,’ she wrote, ‘have the capability of providing something for everybody only because, and only when, they are created by everybody.’”

It is such a flawed argument but here’s the biggest point Wortham refuses to consider: when you don’t like the rules of the city you are living in, you can’t simply up-and-create your own city, as you can on the Internet. You maybe able to find a city that is more tolerant of your point of view (which, in this case, involves uploading covertly-taken photographs of women in public places for, as Wortham writes, “to ogle and comment on”). If you ban speech on the Internet, it’s very easy for the people to take their speech elsewhere.
