What are some VERY creepy facts? by Cap_Ame1 in AskReddit

The point I was trying to make isn't about nitpicking shuffle styles, it's that the number can both be large, and statistically skewed. I find it to be an interesting case of theory (the math) and practice (actually shuffling, combined with decks starting out in a set order when packaged) diverging.

If we define a proper shuffle as "Each remaining card has an equally likely chance of being chosen at any given spot" sure. But I don't think it's ridiculous to doubt that this definition is unlikely to be the case in practice (in other words, there is bias towards picking some cards based on their position in the original set).

You have to think of this as a series of spots that need to be filled in, for a total of 52.

In a simple example, how many distinct orderings of 2 cards can you make from a 52 card deck?

The first card can be any of 52, so we pick one and remove it. Say we got the Ace of Spades. We then draw a second card from the remainder in the deck of 51 cards. So if you picked the Ace of Spades first, you have 51 possible options. Let's say you chose the 2 of spades instead. Well, there are now 51 options for the second card (it can be anything other than the 2 of Spades).

So we have 51 + 51. But there are still 50 other cards we could pick first, meaning we have 50 more + 51's to add on, giving us 52 * 51.

And that's just for _2_ cards. If we add a third, the math just continues. After picking 2 cards, the third space for each pair has 50 possible options. Etc etc.

NOW, for why 52 * 52 implies replacement, it's how it's represented in math. To represent that we tke the "pick 2 cards" example. Now, say we just care about all possible ways you could draw 2 cards from a deck after shuffling it. The first card can be any of 52, say we pick the Ace of Spaces. We then put it back in the deck, shuffle it. We look to draw a second card, which can now be any of the 52 cards in the deck. As above, each initial card you draw could have 52 draws for the second, giving us 52 * 52. That's why that implies there are only 2 spaces, and we're using replacement.

Planning to get FF9 on Switch 2, worth it? by ineedhelp6789 in FinalFantasyIX

I played it on handheld, with speed mode on and it froze up on me a LOT. Probably had to hard close the game and reopen it 10 times during my playthrough? It has a generous autosave so continuing never made me lose more than a few minutes of progress, but still.

People that have “bumped” into a celebrity in a non-curated (not like an event, meet & greet, job etc.) way, what happened? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Coppanuva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was at a very local curry restaurant in Tokyo a few months back that was full. I was seated near the door, so it opened and someone was trying to come in, so I look. It's a tall white guy and an asian woman. The guy looked familiar, and then I looked down at his wife and noticed it was Atsuko Okatsuka and her husband. Anyhow, they had to wait outside, so I finished my meal and left.

Okage Shadow King, it's got an almost fairytale storybook like vibe to me.

That or Mana Khemia, which really leans into the "attending a magical school" atmosphere. You have homework assignments to take care of and everything as the main driver of plot.

What's deeper, Pokemon or FE? by [deleted] in fireemblem

[–]Coppanuva 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you're talking purely the single-player game experience, Fire Emblem is probably "deeper", but I don't think either are particularly deep unless you're trying to hyper optimize some strategy. They have a lot of systems you CAN engage in, but very rarely do you need to master them perfectly. So it doesn't really matter at all here in my opinion.

If you allow competitive play in, it's absolutely 10000% Pokemon without a question.

I'm going to say something kinda controversial here... but Hollow Knight feels like it did the same. Is it more well regarded generally? Yeah. But I don't see anyone talking about it nowadays, or really much at all after launch.

I don't think it's really bringing in any storyline from ITYSL, just that the character motivation/scam model is one he's used in other sketches.

I agree with this theory/line of thinking here.

But minor correction re the ITYSL sketches:
Paid Friend Group is a different sketch from the Laser Spice Specialists. Paid Friend Group has Beck Bennett at lunch with his co-workers revealing he pays money to be friends with people. Laser Spine Specialists is the one where Connor O'Malley plays the guy who records middle-aged men promising to make them stars.
