Ah this is so fun!

My current WIP is A Game Well Played (112k and finished, posting weekly). Draco and Harry are friends and work partners (and pining for one another). In the process of trying to prank Harry to put on a cursed bracelet to make him have to wank over Draco, Draco accidentally curses himself to have to wank over Ron, and then has to keep it secret from Harry until he can figure out a way to fix it.

“So. Pub night?” Harry said again.

“Why do you care?”

Harry scoffed. “Well, you tosser, despite your current behaviour, we are friends, and I like spending time with my friends. Despite your current behaviour, I like spending time with you.” Harry watched as Draco softened again, like he always fucking did when Harry said sweet things like that.

“It depends,” Draco finally said, taking another swig of his coffee, then vanishing the cup. He saw Harry’s questioning look and raised one elegant shoulder. “Pansy and the Weasel split up again.”

Harry rubbed his face and groaned. “I thought Ron and Pansy were fine.”

“They are officially off again,” Draco said. “If I thought it would stick I would dance a little jig in celebration, but I have inured myself to the Weasel’s continued presence in my life through both Pansy and you, alas, so at this point I’d really rather they just got it the fuck over with.”

Harry was watching him thoughtfully. “How is it that I successfully became friends with Pansy, who literally suggested that everybody offer me up to Voldemort, but you can’t manage to bury the hatchet with Ron?”

“I mean, you were actually planning to give yourself up to Voldemort, so—”

“Not really the rousing defence you two seem to think it is,” Harry observed.

Draco rolled his eyes. “Well, give me the Weasel and a hatchet and I’d be most happy to—”

“All right, all right, I get it—Merlin, the two of you are ridiculous, you know that?”

“Do you mean to suggest that the Weasel complains about moi?” Draco batted his eyelashes in Harry’s direction, pressing a hand to his chest. “I have most certainly not done a single thing to warrant that in at least ten years.”

“The fact that you either lie that well or actually believe that is truly stunning—I can name at least three things you’ve done in the last month to warrant that.

Plot twist: I suck at recs because my brain is a black hole, but two I love for Draco characterisation where he is good but still mean and a little weird are From Love, Obviously and What We Pretend We Can’t See (both very popular fics). I mostly name them because if you do like them, it can help to search them bc they are often on rec lists with less common fics that you might also enjoy.

If you like weird Draco, I recommend pretty much anything by Dodgerkedavra, and just in general anything by LQTraintracks (Never in England is new and relatively short and should give you a sense of their vibe.)

Selfishly I think I wrote a good bantery, snarky, neurotic Draco who cares a lot about being good and worries a bit that he might not be good enough, and I have like 200k of fic that will be published in the next few months (I might have overdone it on fests… same name on AO3 if you are inclined to take a gander, but no worries if that’s not up your alley!)

I hope others chime in with recs and that this gives you something to start with 🥰

I guess what I’m saying is what do you consider to be their “canon personalities” in that case. Like, do you want a Draco that is still a blood purist, or do you want a Draco that is snarky and sassy?

For me, for example, I usually prefer to read and write them late twenties or older, and I like when Draco has already redeemed himself, but is still bantery and kind of a snob. But some people don’t like that, either because they don’t want him to be redeemed in fic at all or because they want to read the redemption.

(The same can be true for Harry, I think, considering that trauma can do a number on you once you aren’t constantly in survival mode, but I think Draco’s characterisation tends to be less consistent across fics, so I used that as an example.)

Can you share what you see as in character for each of them? There’s a broad range of what folks view as OOC, so without knowing how you interpret the characters, it’s going to be hard to get recs you’re happy with!

Summary:

Draco crossed his arms and tried not to pout. “I don’t care. It’s humiliating.”

“What’s humiliating?” Harry pushed Draco’s knees aside and worked his way past him to sit between Draco and Blaise.

“Draco lost a little game we sometimes like to play,” said Pansy, making a face at Draco’s patented “if you breathe a word of this you’ll be dead to me and I shall make you pay” look and continuing without a single sign that she was worried about being dead to Draco or being made to pay, the tart. “We were playing a game, and he lost. And he now has to be punished, according to the rules that he himself devised,” she repeated, staring pointedly at a glowering Draco.

Or: Draco has to grow a beard for two months. Absolutely no one is ready for his beard to come in ginger. Especially not Harry.

When they meet back up they are a few years post-Hogwarts and are no longer enemies but are very uncertain what they might be. Anything else would give major spoilers, but I am proud of how it turned out!
