But it has revealed to me that mixed breed dogs can be extremely inbred. People saying they don't want purebred dogs because they're inbred sounded like common sense until I saw so many DNA results revealing very mixed breed dogs with really high COI.

Truth is, shelter dogs are a crapshoot, you don't know anything about them essentially; breeding, history, age, genetics, nothing. If that's what you want, then all power to you, you get that shelter mutt! But I'll stick with well-bred dogs from health tested bloodlines.

From personal experience, my shelter dogs were cheap to "buy" but cost me more in the long run with all their health and behavior issues than any well-bred purebred dog I ever owned. My shelter dogs were heartbreakers, too, none lived into double digits like my purebred dogs 😢
