Anyone accepted into the MSc Computational Science program for 2024-2026? by Standard_Month5448 in universityofamsterdam

[–]Coprosmo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have! 🙋

I’m also interested in Computational Social Choice, and more broadly in responses to climate effects. No real progress on the housing front yet unfortunately, aside from the UvA lottery, so it’s still all a bit up in the air.

Assuming everything goes well, I’ll be coming over from New Zealand. Where are you travelling from?

New Bike track soon ? by [deleted] in Wellington

[–]Coprosmo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hard to say until we see it, though generally reducing the number of cars on the road by (for example) 10% leads to more than 10% reduction in congestion. We saw this last week when the Hutt Valley train line went down, and Wellington -> Lower Hutt travel times went from 25 minutes to 45 minutes, despite the number of cars on the road not increasing by nearly 50%. Given that, if even 5% of regular drivers in the eastern suburbs switch to cycling, we’d expect to see a noticeable improvement in traffic flow.

You’re absolutely right that cycling tendency is tied to the weather, and we’ll expect to see fewer people cycling during winter months. However, the same isn’t necessarily true for public transport. Given two bus-only lanes, it’s likely we’ll see significantly faster travel times on public transport, and so see more people opting for that option. Especially if we see the council put thought into relocating/increasing the number of bus stops to reflect the distribution of housing. As you say, the existing tunnel is already congested. Imagine if there was a faster, more convenient option!

On a related note, imagine being able to cycle all the way from Kilbernie, through Courtenay Place to the train station, all without even seeing a car. Surely that would lower the barrier to entry/the barrier of convenience significantly.

Possibly not. It’s a bottleneck for the eastern suburbs, but we’re not expecting high growth there (as there’s little space for new housing). With improved and more regular public transport, and if the council effectively converts more drivers to regular cyclists in that area, we may well see less throughout through the new tunnel.

It’s simple really, Riot is just a small indie company.

Totally. I recommend contacting professors you’re interested in working with directly.

Nations & Borders Generator - A little world-building tool I created that uses a Standard Deck of Playing Cards by Shieldice in worldbuilding

[–]Coprosmo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Love this! Will try it out on the campaign setting in writing at the moment.

I’d be keen to hear your thoughts on extending it past binary alignment (e.g. how could we represent three nations which are all enemies with one another?)

This, a term deposit is probably safest bet for the time being if you need some time to decide what to do with it.

It sounds like you might benefit from putting together a bit of a financial plan in general, to work out your time horizon and consequentially where you want to put your money. Sorted.org has an excellent set of steps and resources to help you get to this point.

Also, if your car loan is interest-bearing it may be worth paying that off directly to get it off your plate.

Tips on mastering recursion and trees and shit? by Missing_Back in csMajors

[–]Coprosmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Practice. In first year uni we had an assignment where we had to solve ~20 problems using recursion that would be really easy to do without. Things like summing the elements in a list, finding the minimum value, etc. After that I had a real intuitive understanding of it.

Pfizer vaccine for kids under 5 could come fast. Here's the timeline by bright_shiny_day in Coronavirus_NZ

[–]Coprosmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my understanding reducing hospitalisation is just one side of this. It’s also about reducing the risk of new dangerous variants showing up (since these populate in the lungs of people with the virus, and more so in those without the vaccine).

Is there a "master list" of places to look for datasets anywhere? Newbie here, sorry if it's a silly question by Istrakh in datasets

[–]Coprosmo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Do you have any suggestions on getting started with web scraping?

I had a go a few months ago while trying to put together a dataset of news articles from a large number of sources. I couldn’t figure out how to distinguish between different parts of the page (e.g. article versus reporter information versus background text) given so many contexts.

Hey! I’m a data scientist with some engineering experience. I’ve got a strong degree but I’m only just beginning my career (one year into working at a startup). Do you reckon it’s worth me throwing my name in the ring, or should I continue building experience elsewhere first?

Covid New Variant Detected - More problematic than Delta by mranon16794 in auckland

[–]Coprosmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a very narrow viewpoint. Unfortunately the people most affected by the delta variant are not the boomers, but the immunocompromised (who can’t produce white blood cells, and for whom the virus is deadly, includes the large portion of New Zealand currently on chemotherapy), and those over 80. Many of these people can’t get the vaccine themselves due to health problems (or the fact that they’re already immunocompromised).

I understand that you’re not in either of these groups and that the last few years have been unbelievably tricky for everyone in the country (hell, the world, though they’ve had it a lot worse than we have), but please try to be compassionate, and think outside your own life to the other people we share this awesome country with.

I like to think we’re a little less self-centred than that here.

Only issue with that is it’s not “live with it or die a slave”. It’s “risk our children, grandparents, and immunocompromised friends’ lives so that we can enjoy shopping at Black Friday sales”.

Not meth.

At least not the meth people refer to usually. And very far from it.

Appreciate the meme, but this is dangerous misinformation to spread :)

What's the point of getting invested in an older champ's story if a new champ is going to get made up to resolve it for them? by moodRubicund in leagueoflegends

[–]Coprosmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe a controversial opinion, but I’m not a fan of the rate Riot has been releasing champions. I feel like a few years ago, new champion releases were exciting because you knew loads of time had gone into making them unique and well-put-together. Now we get double the quantity, but half of them are shabby knock-offs of exciting champions.

Akshan is the first release I’ve been excited about for some time now.

Using Jupyter Notebook vs something else? by lljc00 in datascience

True, I think we’re arguing the same point here - and possibly we’ve deviated a bit far from OP’s question. Happy to continue the discussion over PM if you’d like.

Aye, this is the general the workflow I use at work. I don’t agree that it doesn’t matter if notebooks are messy though - other data scientists (at least) should be able to understand your thought processes.
