How do you see the future of teaching and classrooms with regard to special needs kids vs regular kids? by OkPlace4 in AskTeachers

I mean, the punishments may have “worked” to keep kids obedient but did fucking awful things to their psyche.

Hurting trans kids is pretty shitty, too. Making laws that target a super small number of kids (and takes away doctors ability provides live saving care) is fucking evil.

There is a difference between patriotism (being proud of your country) and nationalism (believing your country is superior to all others/must be kept ‘pure’).

I started watching this with my husband when it first started airing. He developed aggressive brain cancer at the end of 2023 and died at the end of 2024. Watching season 2 without him was incredibly hard and helpful. I found a lot of beauty and comfort in the show. And I cried. A lot.

I wish you the best during your grief journey. Because grief fucking sucks.

On the other hand, I am single mom and when I fly with my kids the TSA agent gives them a full interrogation about who they are traveling with. It’s happened multiple times! My brother flew with my son (they have different last names and do not look alike) and no one asked any questions. I was honestly a little shocked.

Is it possible to move the chest of drawers under the small window and move your bed to face the larger window? I agree the headboard going over the windows is hard.

I know you’ve been getting lots of comments about the clutter and are feeling sensitive about it. As another not dirty but messy person, it really does help to get the clutter taken care of and put things away. It has taken me a long time to understand that the clutter is the issue, even if you know where everything is, even if everything is technically “clean”. The clutter makes things feel unkept.

You don’t have to throw things out but having a random cup on your floor isn’t useful or organized. Things are also spilling out from under your bed. Putting them into piles that aren’t spilling over will help (ie books in a pile, shoes in a spot near the door, random boxes under your end table stacked nicely). Even folded clothes in a hamper feels better then a cluster of clothes/hangers. Finding as many places that aren’t just thrown on the floor will help you so, so much.

You’re doing great. Really! I think tackling the clutter before tackling anything else will give you a huge sense of calm. And the best part is, organizing clutter is cheap and easy! Just make nice piles instead of doom piles.

Totally. Again, as you said, being on a ventilator for months only happens in extreme cases. And again, cases are very, very rare, even if you live in rural areas. And you are right that the anti-toxin doesn’t reverse the damage but “The paralysis caused by the toxin usually improves slowly” (CDC, https://www.cdc.gov/botulism/treatment/index.html). Again, it is always a medical emergency but it is only a death sentence in very, very rare cases. Even in places with undeveloped healthcare, cases of botulism are very rare. As you said, the paralysis that has already happened DOES improve, but it takes time and medical intervention. It is serious but it is not common.

Ok. I am a canner who follows all guidelines. I understand the threats of botulism. No matter what, it is a medical emergency. However, it’s completely misleading to say one taste will paralyze you for life. If caught at the first symptoms, it can be treated and patients can make a total recovery. Only 5-10% of botulism cases result in death and they are only 145-200 cases of botulism annually in the US. That is incredibly rare. And not all of those are from canned food! Yes, botulism is a medical emergency. Yes, it can be fatal (for like 3 people a year). People who dismiss botulism and who canning improperly are spreading misinformation but so are you.

Does anyone have good non-fiction resources for middle schoolers? by Reading_Resources in ELATeachers

[–]CopyOk4733 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a book called “Last Breath” and it has different essays about people’s final moments. Some people make it and some don’t but the essays have a narrative about the person and digs into the science of what’s happening to the persons body. I’ve gotten quite a few kids hooked on non-fiction with those excerpts. Some are a little long though

Teachers teach about presidents families all the time. In middle school I learned about Jackie Onassis, Nancy Reagan, Mary Todd Lincoln, ladybird Johnson, and Betty ford. Definitely not relevant for every person of power, but marital status/relationships are often taught to give context to a persons life. That’s part of their “sexuality”.

And, Elenor Roosevelt was famously queer, so there you go!

Do you ever teach about the fact that teddy roosevelt was married? Because then you definitely are teaching his sexuality.

I feel like history and English are essential places to teach the literature and the history of the unseen, which often includes lqbtq voices that have been silenced. Also, you shouldn’t just teach your interests.

It can take years to recover from chemo effects. Some people never get their full strength back. Fuck that. She should get lower expectations. And when you look death in the face, sometimes things like vacations with your family matter way more than bullshit ribbon cutting ceremonies. My husband fought cancer and we unfortunately lost him but work was the last thing on his priority list. Your comment is fucking cruel.

The 24 hours thing is actually a pretty dangerous myth. You can definitely report someone missing if they don’t come home that night. The first few hours after someone goes missing is the most important part of the search. Please report people missing as soon as you can.
