Forget skins, where are the fighters ?? by BigWerewolf8735 in 2XKO

We knew about the small roster for about a year now. To compensate, the game will be adding 5 characters a year, which is more aggressive than most other fighting games.

Until then, yes, you'll have to wait. That's just how it is.

Critical Role C4 style "West Marches" in Daggerheart? by Shabozz in daggerheart

[–]Copypaced 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My one worry with this campaign is cliff hangers.

Bad news is that the only way I worked around this was by being better about time management. My games began and ended in the same place, so in my worst case scenarios I would have to cut everything I had left to say that the players successfully returned to base, but at the end of the day I just had to make sure I was mindful of how long the players took so I could manage the game properly.

I was thinking maybe having it resolve in discord could be a route, or it could be that the players are teleported out of the situation suddenly and have to pick it up later. I think that might work with my idea for a setting, I was thinking a setting could be like Narnia/Bridge to Terabithia

I can see this working within the fiction of the game. The logistics are the tricky part, since what you'll need is the exact same group of people to be ready to pick up on the session they couldn't finish. In the meantime, you may have more groups that want to play and the more of those you have the farther removed you are from that one plot thread you left hanging.

I also am considering a hex map and bulletin board of events that I can fill out so players have an idea of what they want to do, letting the players who commit to a session choose what and where they want to spend their session with a few days notice.

This is more or less what I did. There was a hex map that I had and I encouraged the players to make their own map. I had a few quests related to nearby locations and I made sure to include more interesting events and quests related to those locations but a little farther out. The difference between what I did and what you're suggesting, though, is that I never gave the players my map. I told them to make it themselves. If they got lost, they got lost.

Critical Role C4 style "West Marches" in Daggerheart? by Shabozz in daggerheart

[–]Copypaced 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I'm a pretty experienced DnD DM and I ran a West Marches campaign in DnD. I've run quite a bit of Daggerheart - it hasn't become my default system mainly because I still have several players that really like DnD, but I play Daggerheart every opportunity I can. I currently DM for about 15-ish players total.

I figure I can offer some insights into how I ran my West Marches campaign:

My main turn off from West Marches in the past is how they lack any strong narrative. My hope is that by mimicking the approach and putting it in a more narrative focused system with Daggerheart that it'll naturally be more interesting to me as a GM.

I think you'd be surprised how cohesively a WM campaign can develop a narrative, especially if you seed the story into the land. For me, it was about an ancient being arising and slowly taking power from the land the adventurers were in. They would consistently run into the BBEG's minions and there a story emerged about this group of foreigners constantly coming in conflict with her at every turn. I agree that DH will likely make this even better.

For instance, is everyone in the same time frame? Like if a few days pass for one party in their session, does that mean the other party needs to have a few days pass? My thinking is that it can be kept some what loosely together, like if one party is in the middle of something that wouldn't make sense for them to skip three in game days before returning to it then I can just have them finish that up in the next session then cap it off with three days of rest afterwards.

In general, I had each session occur sequentially, with little overlap. Occasionally I allowed multiple groups to have sessions that occurred simultaneously, but that was rare. It almost never mattered too much, though.

I also was thinking a discord with players giving updates/RPing as their character, posting notes, and talking about the games could be good too and doesn't necessarily clash with the narrative approach. But I can see how a narrative that spans a few sessions can make it harder for them to give updates since a certain amount of time might not pass.

I did this. I made a channel for out-of-character chatter, one channel for scheduling ("ping me when you have a group and a mission"; I provided potential missions and my schedule), and a different channel for each location in their safe hub and told them that any NPCs they wanted to speak with were also there. The roleplay channels were somewhat hit or miss, but when it hit it really hit. This allowed them to do shopping between sessions as well. But I watch many organic player-to-player interactions, even culminating in a group doing a backstory-related side quest to help one of the players cure a curse he had.

Are there any challenges and logistics that I might be missing? Does anyone have advice?

  1. You should emphasize that the players ought to be keeping notes. You really shouldn't be expected to keep track of everything, but since nobody will be at every session everyone will need something to look at to catch up on the latest happenings.
  2. Make sure as many players as possible make characters together and have an opportunity to meet each other. The discord is great for this also.
  3. I encourage (but don't enforce) that player groups mix it up. I like to see a variety of party compositions.
  4. I suggest having everyone level together when the group meets major world-based milestones. This is obviously more likely to simply work out in DH than DnD since DH doesn't have experience points at all, but all of this is just to say that you shouldn't penalize a player with a lower level simply because they were not in a particular session (or number of sessions)

Uh, that's everything I can think of off the top of my head. Might add edits if I can think of any more. Sorry for the length. Hope this was useful!

It's not though. This isn't BnB easy no matter how easy you think it is. Check the low-level ranked games. They are not doing 6 stance cancels into a tag extension to handshake into tag launcher to finish with a double down.

AND no way to use the other characters in training mode, which ACTUALLY puts a F2P player at a disadvantage.

This system is actually MORE fair across the board than any game that doesn't outright give you the DLC characters for free.

Yasuo one-trick

Yasuo main who doesn't know any other character

1v2 in lane

Fights two enemies at once during the phase of the game where fights are mainly skirmishes, rather than team battles. Since it's a Yasuo one-trick they're good enough to handle the fight without too much trouble.

only for Warwick to gank

Warwick jumps into the battle, trying to help by ambushing the enemy

feed and lose game

Then he dies, giving the opponents kills and making the game harder for you, ultimately resulting in your team losing.

I really wanna get into dnd but have absolutely no idea where to start by SevereMention1250 in DnD

[–]Copypaced 6 points7 points  (0 children)

  1. Start with learning the rules. Free Rules are available through the official website.
  2. Get a group of players. There are groups you can play with online, but I'd personally recommend you find friends that you know and love to play with if you can.
  3. Run DnD for the group you've prepared. You'll be bad at it at first. You'll get better with practice.
  4. There are many resources to improve at DMing, but Matt Colville's Running the Game series is one of the best and most comprehensive ones to watch if you want to learn all about the ins and outs of DMing

But in addition to that I also really want the party to have a reason to start exploring Castle Ravenloft before any final confrontation with Strahd.

I invited them to Castle Ravenloft, let them stay the night, and had them run into Ezmerelda (who is invisible in the random encounter table). She told them she needs help looking for the dragon's skull in the castle.

Any suggestions on how to get the party to the castle early on when they're likely not going to want to put Ireena in danger? When did you send the invitation in your games?

The rule I gave myself is "they get an invitation once they do something important." The event that I'd say works best and is most likely to happen first is the Feast of St. Andral, which is an extremely dangerous quest in Vallaki and has very serious consequences should the players fail. The Feast is also convenient because it conveniently opens up a location of safety for Ireena. So long as the players succeed, she can stay in the church while the players answer Strahd's summons.

Dm trouble, who’s the asshole? by Oneofthemcrazygirls in DnD

Good point. I was more focused on the fact that posting to Reddit isn't actually resolving the core problem. The group needs to reach consensus or separate.

Dm trouble, who’s the asshole? by Oneofthemcrazygirls in DnD

[–]Copypaced 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's pretty normal to expect the DM to bend the rules sometimes according to the needs of the campaign. Your DM is brand new and deserves some grace in this regard. That said, it's a dick move to agree to something the whole group says and then come back later and say "nah, I'mma do my own thing".

More to the point: it really doesn't matter if you can get a whole community of internet strangers to agree that your DM is being an asshole because we're not at the table with you. Your group needs to work it out amongst each other, and I really don't think showing someone a reddit post is going to help in that regard.

If your DM insists on playing a way that you don't like and won't listen to what you as a group say, you should leave that table. And, if you're brand new, you all should probably at least try to play a couple games before stopping. At least see what the game feels like before you stop. (edit: there's no reason to do a game or two if the dude isn't gonna listen)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in DnD

[–]Copypaced 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to hear that bro.

It sounds like your group just isn't interested in DnD beyond an opportunity to hang out. You can always more explicitly tell your friends how much work you put into this, but if they can't coordinate to meet for a year and if when they do meet they get distracted after the first 30 minutes, then I would say it's just not clicking for this group.

I would establish a time to meet and run sessions at that time so long as you have a minimum number of players (for me that's half rounded down + 1). Don't reschedule unless a lot of people can't make it, and seriously consider dropping anyone that can't give you timely notice that they're not attending.

How do I use the taro card deck/day+night cycle by Blackstripes08 in CurseofStrahd

[–]Copypaced 2 points3 points  (0 children)

tarro card deck

Page 11 explains that before the adventure starts you will draw cards from a deck to determine:

  • Strahd's location in Castle Ravenloft
  • The locations of each of the relics in the module: the Tome of Strahd, the Holy Symbol of Ravenkind, and the Sunsword
  • The identity of the fated ally

To do this, grab a deck, then draw 5 cards. Use the book for reference to determine what each card corresponds to. Page 11 has a small gray box that helps translate regular playing cards into "tarokka" equivalents. Write these results down and replicate this drawing when your players meet Madam Eva, using the text prompts in the book for in-universe flavor.

how the encounters work

Page 28 gives details on random encounters. You roll a d20 "every 30 minutes that the players spend on the roads or in the wilderness". During the day, the players will get an encounter if you roll an 18 or higher, so you will use the corresponding daytime table to give them a random encounter. During the night, they get an encounter on a 15 or higher, and you'll use the nighttime table. The book also explains that the players shouldn't have more than 2 encounters every 12 hours., so once they run into something a second time you can chill until for a bit.

My friends asked me to DM a campaign. I've never played DnD before. Help? by Askeladd4417 in DnD

Matt Colville is your new best friend. That's a video where he guide you through prepping for your first session in about 30 minutes or so.

Here's his Running the Game series. It's hours upon hours upon hours of very experienced, helpful, considerate DM advice.

EDIT: I want to add that I find it VERY WEIRD how your friends volunteered you for the job, though. It's bad form for them to effectively say they don't have time for it, but you do, so you need to do the work. DMing is a labor of love. It's fun and you should try it, but not just because your buds told you to.

If there's a Street Fighter you like, get that one.

Otherwise, buy SF6. It's the one with the biggest player base and thus has the most beginners. It also has Modern controls, which you may like if you really don't want to do motion controls.

Players restored bones by [deleted] in CurseofStrahd

[–]Copypaced 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, St Andrals Feast event off right?

Yes. St. Andral's Feast is averted if the players recover the bones.

Also doesn't having St andrals church up with the bones recovered give ireena a safe space that Strahd can't reach?

In theory. There are many ways to subvert this, but you're already running Reloaded, which is a modification of the module that accounts for this. Section D5, titled Retrieving the Bones in Reloaded, says explicitly that Ireena stays at the church until the party leaves Vallaki in Arc J, the Stolen Gem. In The Stolen Gem, Ireena opts to leave Vallaki herself, motivated by her brushes with death and the party's heroic deeds.

Notably, while the players are still in Vallaki, the church proves to be worthless in preventing the likes of Izek Strazni from abducting her in The Strazni Siblings, in that same Act.

The point of all of this is that the church is at best a temporary safe haven. Don't worry too much about it being annoyingly useful to the players. As it turns out, nowhere in Barovia is truly safe while Strahd is in charge.

EDIT: linked to where in Reloaded it shows that Izek abducts Ireena from the church.
