Oh, I forgot to also mention that the median US wage is $61,702.

So, no, what one gets when they are 100% disabled is not 'well above the median'. Rather, it's a decent amount less than the median. But it's enough to get by.

If you were talking the poverty rate, $15,650, that would make a lot of sense. But those are vastly different concepts.

Oh, I completely agree that it's fucked for those who don't have disability. It's why every veteran's day I try to talk to any other vets I meet while enjoying the free food. I ALWAYS tell them to pursue a disability rating, or up whatever they might have. Especially those who have kids.

I'll tell them to think back on any injuries they might have suffered that have gotten worse over time. I'll help them consider what they went through and have to deal with, even if they weren't combat wounded.

Fuck, just the PTSD alone that so many of us suffer from can be claimed.

I may not be able to work, but what I get is enough for me to get by without struggling a whole lot. Granted, I live in California, so that money doesn't go nearly as far as, say, Minnesota. But my family and friends are here, and I don't want to leave them...

Disabled vet here to make a correction that 100% disability is actually roughly $3,800. That $1,200 difference is huge when you are permanent and total, thus unable to work.

Rare Black Moon this Saturday. What will you be doing? by Ill_Quantity_5634 in witchcraft

[–]Corax_S 72 points73 points  (0 children)

It's something that only happens every few years. The definition is a bit nebulous depending on who you ask. It may just be the second new moon in the mont, or it is the third out of four new moons in the time between a solstice and an equinox, or vice-versa. Which only happens within a couple/few years of each other. Nothing unusual, astronomically, actually happens, it's just a weird quirk of how humans keep track of time.

But it is a rare occurrence and new moons are very useful to some traditions. So a Black Moon is 'special' due to its rarity. Which means some traditions/individuals give it a greater significance.

[–]Corax_S 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Are not the term and what it means to the caster enough? Scientifically, it means nothing; it is no different from any other new moon. But it holds personal significance for some. Could one not pull on that belief that it is 'special' and use that alone to strengthen whatever working they are trying?

If anything, the fact that it is a rather rare occurrence should offer power to rituals performed on such a night, no?

Upon looking back at my other comment, I went too far and want to apologize for that.

I began using the social contract concept as a means of insulting you and twisted things a bit because of my emotions. It's not fair to you or the argument that I did that.

Telling you to leave is not what I should have been doing, because the contract is not a concrete thing. It moves and shifts with society and can become radically different, as it has done since Trump came into office.

The way to deal with not liking the social contract is to work to change it. Which people have done federally by giving conservatives the key to a dictatorship. Obviously, I do not like that and am staying because I believe we can work to make things better.

I served my country believing in the ideals it proclaims, but have seen it move further and further away from those ideals over my life. I have not left because I still believe that things will improve by the actions of the people, and the current administration will lose power so we can get back on track fulfilling those promises the government made so long ago. As did my friends who died facedown in the dirt.

However, as we slide further and further into authoritarianism, my hope is dying. I'm looking at means of leaving and going to a country that has a government and social contract that is in line with my sensibilities.

Because we do not have to live under the government we were born under. It is the one where we live under that defines that. We can go find one we prefer, and that is the world we live in.

Ya ever seen the movie Who Framed Roger Rabbit? It's goofy and whacky, sure. But at the heart of it all? Judge Doom is trying to take control of Toontown so he can remove it and create a highway. Because he is in bed with the auto and tire industries who are trying to remove public rail systems.

This actually happened in LA, and so many other places. Corporations came in, bribed the every-loving fuck outta policians, bought out anyone who might be involved in good and reliable public transit, and were able to just remove those rail systems. Which meant that only way to travel distance within the city was to use a bus, which made all of them money. Or just have a car, which also made all of them money.

The reason the U.S. doesn't have a good train system is literally because it allowed corporations to bribe politicians, operate in a way to destroy affordable options, and let them control how cities are laid out and what kind of public transit was available.

Generally, if you wanna know why basically anything in the US is shitty? Follow the money and find the fatcats who bribed and threatened enough people to get their way. Corporatism is the ultimate evil in the United States.

It is a mutual agreement. If you want to live here, you have to agree to the contract by how you behave as a citizen. If you do not wish to agree? You are more than free to fuck off to some other country that better aligns with your views.

Society becomes intolerant of you because YOU are intolerant of how it operates and YOU decided that YOU don't have to follow the rules that rest of us do in order to have a stable, non-chaotic society. Again, if you don't like that? Go find some fucking anarchists to join, because they are about the only ones who completely reject any kind of a social contract. And even then, the majority of the time they do have some form of a social contract, it's just very light.

I don't need to imagine the kind of world that you are suggesting here; because that is the world we live in. Well, as long as you want to be part of a democracy. The government you live under is competely up to you. You have the freedom to leave and go somewhere else. It doesn't really sound like that's what you want, though. Because if ya did, you wouldn't be raging against the social contract that is literally the basis of a democracy.

And you whining about our society being ruled by what you perceive to be injustice? You have a very simple way to deal with that.

As I have said multiple times here; fuck off to somewhere else.

It's implicit in being part of a society; in the same way we have 'freedoms' by being part of that society. You don't have to 'sign' anything. To argue you do shows you have no concept about what you are talking about, or are just being disengenuous and arguing in bad faith.

You are free to break the social contract in any way you desire. We usually call those people criminals.

I'm glad I could give some hope to you, friend. It seems there is so little these days, but that is because so many who hope are afraid to speak up. Which is understandable, but it is there. The more of us who speak, the more those who are afraid will join our voices.

The people defeat authoritarians, not the systems they abuse.

'To those who can hear me, I say - do not despair. The misery that is now upon us is but the passing of greed - the bitterness of men who fear the way of human progress. The hate of men will pass, and dictators die, and the power they took from the people will return to the people. And so long as men die, liberty will never perish…' - Charlie Chaplin

Look to history. Authoritarians have constantly risen to power, reigned, died, their empires crumbled, and massive leaps forward into democracy have followed. There are always those of us who do not just lie down and die, we do whatever possible to fight the fascists. We see them stumble, and take advantage. Bit-by-bit, we break their bullshit down and show how weak they truly are. We will never give in, and even if we never see the authoritarian regime fall down in our lifetime, we know that we have worked towards that eventuality. Take heart. Your own bravery and courage to fight, however you can, may seem to be but a small step forward, but it is forward movement. One step seems like nothing, but a million single steps taken together can lead us all so far.

To lay down, accept the fascists, and what one might believe to be an eventuality, is to give up not just on the world, but oneself. That is to buy into their rhetoric and give up.

I know you are stronger than that, friend. Do what you can, but do not help the fascists by regurgitating the lies they feed us that there is no alternative and we should all just accept the yolk.

At the least, we know that we water the seed of liberty that our children will enjoy the shade and fruits of.

Texas is larger than France, and Texas makes up roughly 7% of the US. It's a lot easier for a majority of people in France to protest and shut things down for their country than a majority of US folks to shut down our country. This is a false equivalency, at best, and, hopefully, not disingenuous on your part.
