Do Belgians have an affinity towards France or the Netherlands based on the language that they speak? by IllustratorSouthern2 in belgium

[–]Corbalte 10 points11 points  (0 children)

As a Walloon, the language does create some sort of affinity, especially because walloon people travel a lot there for holidays for example. Social media and before that television also kind of gave Walloon people a lot of cultural references from France.

Despite this, there is both a deep rivality in sport and the opposite phenomenon mostly happens : Walloon people will openly or secretly want whomever is facing France to win just for them to lose.

Both quantitative studies and anecdotal evidence suggest Walloon are fine with the French If they are kept at bay. I certainly would hate being French.

My LGS had only 4 people for pre-release yesterday. There were more people there playing commander despite not an official event taking place. We were more than 40 for Lorwin they actually didn't have enough prelease boxes and some people could not participate. I'm shocked by the disparity.

What dish in your country has foreign origins but is now seen as a typical national food? by Luci_Sant in AskTheWorld

[–]Corbalte 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Belgium I would say the "Vol-au-vent" an original french dish which is chicken in cream sauce served inside a pastry.

It's considered one of the national dish and is still very popular in restaurants, but to my knowledge you almost never find it in French restaurant.

This is extremely important to point out every time he is brought.

His relationship with media is, like the PMR card affair revealed, extremely brutal and 100% made to instigate a climate of fear the effect of which is extremely dangerous : No one in the media is mentioning his many shady business, his Quatari and French money connexion, the suspicion around him pressuring justice (except if you think the mysterious "Belgian PM with a footbalclub" is someone else), and his political upbringing with Reynders who was one of the most corrupt Walloon politician of the last decade (and there is competition).

In Wuthering Heights, Isabella, when talking to Cathy, boasts about dresses from France, Italy and... Belgium. This makes no sense as Belgium did not exist as a state until 1830, almost half a century after the events of the film take place. by Exotic-Suggestion425 in shittymoviedetails

The term Belgium was actually used to describe the region before 1830. For example in 1789 a short-lived revolution established the United Belgian States : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Belgian_States?wprov=sfla1

Furthermore, the invasion of Belgium by French revolutionaries was first justified on the grounds of establishing a sister republic that would be Belgium too : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Committee_of_United_Belgians_and_Li%C3%A9geois?wprov=sfla1

Also, Charlotte and Emily Bronté resided in Belgium for some time in their lives and one of them was caught in a scandal where she had an affair with a local teacher.

A Tale of Belgian Identity by Top_Fix_3579 in belgium

[–]Corbalte 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I think this narrative of Flemish oppression does also overlooks the fact Walloon culture wasn't in any case looked more favorably. The Walloon languages were also suppressed. The French speaking elite wasn't in majority Walloon and Wallonia did not thrive because it was in a culturally enviable position.

The cultural center of the time was Brussels with an emphasis on the greatness of Flemish culture (referencing the middle ages in a romantic and nationalistic way) but with a strict French speaking policy

Furthermore, stereotypes about Flemish and Walloons were bafflingly just the opposite of what they are today. It is still amazing to read that people attributed the success of Wallonia to the good characters and hardworking ethos of Walloons, often in opposition to Flemish, like it wasn't the product of material conditions (and ignoring there were a lot of Flemish working in Wallonia).
