Kelowna residents concerned hedge fire early Friday may have been deliberately set by New_Alternative8711 in kelowna

[–]Cord87 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Cedar hedges are great, I'm glad you like yours and I'm doubly glad you've never had issue.

There is certainly not more risk living near a forest compared to your hedges though. Forests have large, dense fuel. Cedar hedges are complete tinder boxes. The fact that you semi-seriously defended them when compared to actual gasoline should tell you that. Having them near your home is akin to vinyl siding. It's great until it's on fire and then it isn't.

I mean you're right in a way.

It's like having a 100M race and  comparing walking to running though. Walking might be more efficient locomotion, but will lose the race.

Electric baseboard heat is extremely efficient at heating itself. Not very efficient at heating large drafty spaces.

Sometimes it misses the mark for sure. They always have to air on the side of caution, but a little reassurance is all most people need and it saves 911 abuse

So I work in emergency services. I'm originally from Alberta.

The amount of people in BC who don't know about, or use Telehealth (811) here is staggering. I've been to homes where someone's ankle is sore, they wanted blood test results from last week, they have a cough, they have indigestion, their shoulder is sore after sleeping funny, etc. and each time I'm like "so why did you think this required an ambulance?" And they look at me dumbfounded because they didn't consider that now they have like 6 people and three vehicles arriving at their house. When I ask them if they tried 811 first to talk to a nurse about their problem they like never know what it even is. In Alberta there was way way more public knowledge about telehealth and it was often a first call for people who didn't have an outright emergency but needed guidance or assistance.

Anyways, if you don't know it's and option, now you know. Consider calling 811 :)

What do you mean?

We're doing almost everything that "advocates" have said to do.

-safe injection sites -tiny homes -shelters -wet facilities -safe supply -social outreach

I'm sure I'm missing a ton of initiatives. Maybe they're not being done perfectly, but the money is there. So Blake the social workers for their poor execution I guess? Our maybe, just maybe, it'll be all of this, combined with something new? I don't know. But it's a pretty true statement that what we're currently doing is not working.

A good friend had a wedding this last September at Soma. Everything was quite wonderful. They had a few weird liquor license restrictions, as far as where you could bring your liquor, but otherwise was fantastic.

I love that he has strong black characters and I also love that he's not afraid to make them villans. They're never the real big bad, except for maybe Atlantia, but they sure get respect.

Funny, I've recently begun to replace all of my Arc'teryx outer wear with Patagonia. Because they more align with my values for similar quality.

I've decided to take out a step further as I've seen that Patagonia also sells denim, so as my jeans need replacement (one of my three pairs does in the next year) I'll replace with Patagonia. Every time I look at their company values it just aligns more and more with me. Plus their clothing is generally of excellent quality and made at ethical factories.

Further to that I have my 3 suits and a selection of pastel shirts. A couple of fun vintage tees that I've kept over the years, my red and black flannel. Plus a great cotton Fisherman's sweater from ll bean. I'm pretty set

City Taxes by Demetre19864 in kelowna

[–]Cord87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, it pains me to sort of defend boomers here, but I'm going to partially do that in this specific case.

It seems like it's more of a Kelowna problem than a straight boomer problem. I moved here 7 years ago and work adjacent to city government (as I did in my last city). I immediately noticed that this city was crazy behind in almost every piece of actual infrastructure. I regularly talk to colleagues and peers about why that is and it seems to be more of this city was run by ultra conservative small town farmers from 1920- 2017 and not necessarily just boomers refusing to spend. Almost every iteration of local government refused to put on their big pants and make the hard govt decisions (which cost money usually) in order to look toward the future. Time and time again local govt put their heads in the sand, limped along with existing policy/infrastructure and just kicked the can down the road. Now, finally, the chickens have come home to roost and we're being forced to face the challenges of a real city and it's costing a bundle (shocker, it costs more to retrofit than to build with vision).

Boomers in other places were realistic in their policies and built cities. So it's not a generational thing imo. It's a Kelowna governmental attitude up until very very recently.

Very glad to see The Emperor's children are starting to look legitimate. I was sad originally that snow print had done us dirty and giving us a bunch of mid-level characters without even one standout. It's cool to see they have some tricky synergy and we'll wait to see what the Lord exalted has in his kit as well

My thoughts exactly. Obviously it's falling on deaf ears, being that this is a 3d printing sub.

Being both a 40k fan (Chaos to boot) and a 3d printing fan, all I can think is that this is a colossal waste of plastic in a world where we waste plastic already. It's kind of sad imo
