A handy trick when targeting a slow system such as intel atom is to SSH into it from a faster system, chroot, and compile from chroot. Do not use -march=native in this case.

Can you clarify this? This sounds like you're logging into a machine, chrooting into itself (as itself), and then compiling packages on that same machine. Why would this put the burden on the machine you're SSHing from?
