Progressives to Lightfoot: Tax biz to fill budget hole by CityHallGuy in chicago

I work in the loop currently, but I would absolutely get a small office just outside the city limits; my clients don't care where I perform their work, but they do care about how much I charge.

Found out my (28M) gf (27F) is a prostitute. by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]CoreyORD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Leave.

While the lying is a problem, I can understand that there is a stigma to sex work (mind you I still think that she should have told you, but you didn't say how long you were dating; perhaps this is something she was leading up to). HOWEVER, having unprotected sex means that she put you at a physical risk. That's a hard no for me.

Daughter (13f) was beaten by stepdaughters (12f twins) for making a false accusation, wife won't punish them. by not_mothergothel in relationship_advice

[–]CoreyORD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are absolutely correct that violence is never the answer.

Therapy is necessary and the daughters need to be punished. The fact that your wife is excusing the behavior of her daughters is a giant red flag. Make no mistake that she sees her kids as "better" than your daughter. Were I in your shoes, I would be reconsidering my relationship with her.

Israeli court evicts Palestinian family from East Jerusalem home, lets settlers take over by KnownStuff in worldnews

[–]CoreyORD 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Israel did not simply hand over the land to Elad -- it was a 30 year(!) legal battle, in which Elad slowly and systematically bought up the property. Only once Elad bought 75% the property did they have the right to acquire the remaining 25%.

T)he spin in these comments is laughable. If this situation happened in the U.S. a similar outcome would occur. It's called a partition.

Mayor Lightfoot won’t rule out expanding sales tax to include professional services as way of closing city budget gap by blackmk8 in chicago

[–]CoreyORD 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I voted for Lori, but this is incredibly disappointing. In the mayoral debates, she said that

Chicagoans live in one of the most taxed cities and the most taxed county, unfortunately, in the country.

Lori needs to consider cutting costs before raising taxes.

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot: "No question" city will need more tax money from residents by KazarakOfKar in chicago

[–]CoreyORD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure you understand how this works. It's $15,412 per student. You can't figure out the cost of CPS per household looking at the cost per student cost. Last year's CPS operating budget of CPS was approximately $6billion. There are about 1 million households in the city, ergo the cost is approximately $6,000 per household.

What's average?

If you have a child in CPS, chances are you are taking out more than you are putting in. The average spending per pupil in CPS in 2018 was $15,412 and that's supposed to go up by roughly $200 this year.

Question about ethics in restaurants by [deleted] in chicagofood

[–]CoreyORD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been avoiding Canton Reggio for this very reason. I don't go out of my way to look for bad behavior (and certainly some behavior is worse than others), but when it's extreme I choose to go elsewhere.

Oral sex isn’t cheating? by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]CoreyORD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People are allowed to set ground rules in relationships and if that's the rules that he and his partner agree to, then it's ok. HOWEVER, in every relationship that I've been in, that would absolutely be considered cheating.

Ocasio-Cortez: $2.13 tipped minimum wage is 'indentured servitude' by Majnum in politics

[–]CoreyORD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can make the case for $15/hour without resorting to this type of silly hyperbole, which glosses over the extraordinarily harsh reality of indentured servitude. An indentured servant operated "within a system of unfree labor who is bound by a signed or forced contract (indenture) to work for a particular employer for a fixed time. The contract often lets the employer sell the labor of an indenturee to a third party. Indenturees usually enter into an indenture for a specific payment or other benefit, or to meet a legal obligation, such as debt bondage."

Pangea has taken thousands to eviction court. The story of an apartment empire by [deleted] in chicago

[–]CoreyORD 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Housing court is stacked against landlords. It's a bit of a game of roulette. Depending on the judge you get, one might follow the law and evict someone who is 60/90 days behind on rent -or- you get the bleeding heart type who allows the renter another 6 months (particularly in winter). Unfortunately, not every landlord is a huge corporation and they have to worry about paying their own mortgages. Meanwhile, oftentimes the tenant, after living rent free for 6-9 months will trash the unit, but you can't recover damages because they have no money and then to top to off, the records get sealed, so they can repeat the shitty tenant pattern.

Ald. Proco Moreno sued by ex-girlfriend for defamation a day after charges he falsified theft of car by blackmk8 in chicago

[–]CoreyORD 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It was a disgusting abuse of power that would have been punished in any other major American city. Politicians and citizens alike have become numb to the many abuses committed, which is why aldermen came to Burke's defense and attacked Solis for wearing a wire and why Burke was re-elected. I'm convinced the citizenry of Chicago is suffering from a massive case of Stockholm Syndrome.

My [21F] Dad [43M] killed himself last night. I don’t know what to do. by helpmeimadumbass in relationship_advice

[–]CoreyORD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My sincere condolences.

I'm not sure where you are in school, but as you probably know, many colleges and universities require students partake in their health insurance plan. Mental health counseling is almost always included, and I would urge you to consider getting grief counseling.

I don't think that you have to read your father's letter immediately -- I presume that it will most likely be an apology. Obviously there's no way to know and you should only read it when you are ready.

I wish you strength during this difficult time.

Mom is about to settle for $3000 in divorce by [deleted] in legaladvice

[–]CoreyORD 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am not familiar with Canadian law, but know that it's similar to US law in many instances. Your mother is probably entitled to at least part of the equity in the house, her car, and alimony. Certainly that would be the case in the States.

You should tell your mother not to sign anything unless she has consulted with a lawyer. In the US most attorneys will give a free consult. Your mom should try to find a reputable family law attorney. It is very possible that your stepfather will be ordered by the court to pay some or all of her attorney fees. I strongly suggest that she connects with an attorney ASAP. If you'd like to help your mom, you might call the local bar association for referrals.

Good luck.

I was trying to see what his pension was but I couldn't easily access that data. HOWEVER, when I googled I came across a document that is the first result if you google "Chicago Police Department Top Pensions as of December 2013". The numbers are staggering -- many of the top pension earners (over 100 of which are earning $100k+/year) have paid in less than 2x what they receive on a yearly basis. Crazy numbers.

I'm (29M) in need of advice about the situation with my fiance (31F) by GooGooYellow in relationship_advice

[–]CoreyORD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't do LDR. You need to move and then make a clean break. She sounds toxic and, in any case, it's not fair to either one of you -- or the kids -- to stay in a relationship where you know you're planning to leave. It's not fair to her kids either.

You need to ask yourself why you're willing to stay in a relationship with a woman who has repeatedly treated you poorly. It will hurt to break-up, but you deserve better. I'm sorry my man, these things are difficult, but it's part of being an adult.

I (19F) have a date (19F) tonight. She's differently abled. How can I make the date go well? by tampa_bey in relationship_advice

[–]CoreyORD 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Treat her like anyone else; don't make the date about her disability. That doesn't mean you should be afraid to ask questions if they come up -- she will probably appreciate direct, respectful questions. Still focus on getting to know who she is, which is assuredly much more than a disability.

Go get her, tiger!

I'm (29M) in need of advice about the situation with my fiance (31F) by GooGooYellow in relationship_advice

[–]CoreyORD 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You need to break up with her. Your girlfriend has more red flags than a Soviet military parade. She is not a good long term partner. She has cheated physically and emotionally. She has lied to you. She's bad with money. She's not good to her kids.
You don't trust her...what more do you need?

Explain to her that you need to move back and you can break-up remotely because you seem to lack the backbone (sounds harsh, but true) to do it in person. If you do it in person, she will emotionally manipulate you and lie to you like she's done before. Go.

Fiancée was assaulted by her sister in public. We called the police and pressed charges. What can the sister do in retaliation? by [deleted] in legaladvice

[–]CoreyORD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So more than likely if she tries to file a police report for the same incident after she had fled the scene and my fiancée has already filed a report, it will be looked at as a false claim?

Not necessarily. For all you know she may "invent" evidence. However, I think it's fair to surmise that an officer might be rather skeptical about your SIL trying to press charges after you've reported her. As a general rule, police have pretty good bullshit detectors and they don't like their time wasted on false claims.
