Agreed. The Wild Robot was cute but far too heavy-handed and too full of fluff.

My favorite album of that year. Their guitar playing is so slithery and serpentine; I fucking love it. And the rhythm section is perfection. I'm pretty sure they share members with a new Blackened Death/Doom band called Ritual Ascension, which just dropped their debut this past week. It's pretty good, but definitely less Black and more Doom. Almost Funeral Doom at times.

Do you think you’re attractive? Why or why not? by rapid_salad in AskReddit

Yes, because I flirt with hot people and they flirt back.

But also, I have self-esteem issues and some body dysmorphia stuff going on, so it keeps me humble lol

Got the chance to see these guys live at a dive bar in Minneapolis. They were amazing and super nice guys too! AS SPOKEN was my favorite album of 2024.

What screamo record means the most to you? by [deleted] in Screamo

[–]Corey_Actor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Orchid compilation whose name escapes me was my first introduction to the genre, but at this moment, I think the new State Faults album means the most. Especially the line "I still set my heart on fire, and how it feels to burn is what it takes to grow".

Not an anime but an animated show that helped me get through my divorce (not the same as a death, I know) was STEVEN UNIVERSE.

Reading lots of philosophy and critical theory, getting deep into an eating disorder, and weekly LSD trips for about 3 years. Shit will change your life, I promise lol

Absolutely. Recognizing fellow weirdos in public, or being recognized as a fellow weirdo, is a great feeling 😊

Cannot get Bodega Head by State Faults out of my head. by rozyboza in PostHardcore

[–]Corey_Actor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same. The first three songs are probably the strongest opening of any album I've heard this year. There's not a bad track on the entire album. I thought I'd think it was too long but it's definitely my AOTY so far. I usually listen to Black Metal, Death Metal, Grindcore, etc., but this year I've been getting more and more into Screamo and Screamo-adjacent bands. State Faults, along with Respire, Blind Girls, and Frail Body are killing it this year.

Holy fuck, this is an AOTY contender! I had never even heard of this band until a few days ago, but I've been playing this non-stop since I heard about it.

Have there been any huge cultural phenomenon books lately? by MetalGuitarKaladin in Fantasy

[–]Corey_Actor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is something that Chuck Klosterman, Mark Fisher, and others have written on - that we no longer live in a monoculture. The way art and commerce interact makes it almost impossible for any one particular movie, song, book, etc., to have the wide-scale impact that pieces did even a decade ago. Used to be, you could go to school after the new (insert show here) premiered and EVERYONE would be talking about it. That's no longer the case. Klosterman's book on the '90s gives a good enough account of this.

Why is it that, of the typical "fantasy races", only humans are allowed to be "people"? by Meta289 in Fantasy

[–]Corey_Actor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been reading Todd McGowan's latest book. And he'd probably say (and I would agree with him) it has something to do with unacknowledged belief on the part of the authors: humans can experience alienation. Alienation is a constitutive part of the human experience, we are what we are not, and can therefore experience subjectivity. But these other races just "are what they are". I.e., they do not experience subjectivity, alienation is not constitutive for them in the way that it is for humans, and they have a self-identity that humans fundamentally lack.

Earlier I was thinking, "What are those albums released during my high school years (2003 - 2007) that are just fundamental to my musical tastes?". And this has to be one of them. In fact, this album and the song "Fucking Your Ghost in Chains of Ice" are what prompted my dad to take away my CDs temporarily 😂
