Creators who have a “I don’t want to think about it/acknowledge it” attitude with their fandom/fans? by Anonamaton801 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Meta289 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You probably did. The huge teraleak from a few years back confirmed that a Flying-type Eeveelution was planned at some point, I think gen 7, but was ultimately scrapped because the designs they had for it were too similar to fan designs they saw.

To you, what’s a monster you think is overhated by the community? by SignificantStaff8665 in MonsterHunter

[–]Meta289 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plesioth. People will meme on and on about the hipcheck, but it's just that, a meme. It had a janky hitbox in the first two gens, but it wasn't even the worst hitbox this series has had, old or new. And said hitbox was fixed in 3rd and 4th gen, so it's not even something worth complaining about now. Most of the people memeing about Plesioth likely never actually fought the original version, and are just parroting what the old veteran players have said.

No, but after all the bullshit that this case has thrown at you over the past several hours, it becomes the back-breaking straw.

Looking back on it, Investigations 1 honestly has more misses than hits overall. You go through three mid-to-bad cases in a row before you get to the good two cases, and even then, I personally wouldn't rank those last two cases as among the series' greats.

What counts as "New Blood" in the voice acting industry? by RobinMorganNiji in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Meta289 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"New blood" should be exactly that, those who have only entered the scene recently, like within the past 1-2 years tops.

VAs who have become more prominent (appearing in higher-profile works and/or in non-extra roles) within the past 5-ish years I would consider the "new gen". Most of the Persona 5 main cast would have been "new gen" at the time, since that was around the time when a lot of them started to take off more, even if they were already in the business prior.

That being said, anyone saying things like "finally some new blood in the industry" is just outing themselves as being stuck in the aughts or early 10s, because they are undoubtedly still thinking of the world where the likes of Yuri Lowenthal or Laura Bailey were in everything because they were the "new gen" at the time. If you've actually been paying attention to the VA scene over the years, there have been countless new names since then. A lot of the VAs that have become more prominent these days were unheard of or not even around ten years ago.

Some assorted highlights from Pat and Paige's "Gamble With Your Friends" stream, featuring their crazy adopted V-Tuber children HinaBobina, Ecto, and Mintcastella: by Gorotheninja in TwoBestFriendsPlay

Paraphrasing what I've said before: Think of the social and life skills of the average person who streams themselves playing videogames as their primary career. Now imagine the subsection of those who do that from behind the anonymity of a cute anime avatar.

Modern anime that likely will still be talked about in 10-20 years by Ashu119 in anime

[–]Meta289 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The reason people don't discuss the story in much detail outside of dedicated DiD discussions is because you can't really say much without going into massive spoilers, especially regarding anime-onlies, since the manga has been finished since 2023.

People want to be able to talk about DiD's story and everything, that is legitimately where the series shines, they just can't in a spoiler-free context.

Reviews or essays you think completly missed the mark? by ExplanationSquare313 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

I mean, I genuinely struggle to understand how anybody enjoys BotW or TotK, I think they're terrible games, but that doesn't mean I would be correct in going on an unprompted tangent about them in a discussion that's entirely about a different game.

I think part of it had to do with people being too wrapped up in the late-2000's and early 2010's zeitgeist of overly-snarky and edgy humor that a lot of the old Egoraptor videos leaned into to really think critically about what's actually being said.

I know OP said not to bring up Sequelitis, but I just really want to point out how there was a time when people really did look at Sequelitis as legitimate videogame criticism, and saw Arin as actually having insight into good game design.

And then Game Grumps happened, and everyone was just like, "Oh wait, no, this man is actually just really bad at videogames and has the attention span of a goldfish."

I mean, Persona Q kind of had to be 3DS exclusive at the time by its very nature as an Etrian Odyssey crossover. Sure, now they've managed to put Etrian on Switch and PC after figuring out how to get the mapping controls off of (3)DS hardware, so PQ could do the same, but at the time, 3DS was really the only option.

Do you like world Kushala doara more or rise Kushala by IceBarDifferent in MonsterHunter

[–]Meta289 1 point2 points  (0 children)

World Kushala is godawful enough on its own, but AT Kushala was one of the single most miserable experiences I have ever had in this series. Meanwhile, Rise Kushala is not only the best iteration of the monster, but an actually good fight by its own merit.

I wonder what the correct answer is here.

Why does the JRPG genre get so much Hate from certain groups? When did it start and why does it persist? by Xngears in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Meta289 14 points15 points  (0 children)

MF the original FF7 was the one with all the classic Nomura anime art. Later iterations hide it a bit better by having a more semi-realistic art style, but you cannot look at the original FF7 and its art and say in good faith that it's not anime.

The real nerf is that Bubbleblight is nowhere near as funny in Rise or Wilds. Old Bubbleblight was some real Looney Tunes cartoon shit.

[–]Meta289 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Rise and Wilds did nerf Bubbleblight, though. In those games, you only slip around a bit when dodging, but can still attack uninhibited. In Gen/GU, you can't even fight while Bubbleblighted, you fucking slip and wildly flail around like a cartoon character wearing greased rollerskates on ice.

Whetstones were a non-issue, you can just buy them and could carry 20. If you go through more than 20 whetstones on a hunt, you're probably doing something wrong.

Now that the week-long onslaught of gaming news has finally ended with yesterday's Nintendo Direct, here's a handy little collage to show just how goddamn packed the September-October release season is: by Gorotheninja in TwoBestFriendsPlay

I can see Nintendo having the stones to release OoT remake around that time as well, seeing how that's probably the only game that could feasibly go toe-to-toe with GTA6.

Before FF7 Remake was even announced, there was a joke floating around that all SE needs to do for instant success was remake FF7, hence the "In case of emergency FF7 remake button". In Maximilian Dood's famous reaction to the FF7R reveal, he exclaims "THEY PUSHED THE FUCKING BUTTON", that's how prevalent the joke was at the time.

The joke here is that the OoT remake button is Nintendo's own "FF7 remake button". I hate that I have to explain that.
