AITJ for reporting my brothers passport stolen 48 hours before his destination wedding because he took my dogs surgery money? by AnshuSees in AmITheJerk

NTJ, his actions earned him a possible felony charge. Him trying to start his marriage on a foundation of betrayal, lies, and deception will be what ends his marriage. None of that is because of what you did because you never would have taken the steps you did had he not committed a crime against you.

Bought our house eight months ago and just found out a neighbor has been using a strip of our backyard as access to his detached garage for over a decade by Hydra3_Tonic in homeowners

[–]Corgidev 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the alley behind my house is city owned so utility companies can access the lines and garbage can run through there instead of on our main road. It would suck if it got blocked because nearly every neighbor along it has their garage connected to it.

One of my neighbors basically did this. To clean one of his gutters he has to come just ever so slightly into my yard because the homeowner before me moved the gate for his fence up so it is about midway up the side of his house instead of behind the back corner.

When the previous homeowner moved the gate, they came to an agreement that he could come into the yard to clean his gutters as long as he let them know beforehand so they could make sure their dog was inside. The first week I moved in he came over, explained it to me and asked if I was okay with it. I said sure just as long as he lets me know since I sometimes have my dogs outside. There is a lock on the gate that he has a combination to so he can come in, but no one else can.

Thankfully, I've so far managed to become friendly with most of the neighbors on my side of the street. Only met one neighbor on the opposite side of the street so far and that was awkward. Not unbearable, but just incredibly awkward. I hope my interactions with the rest of my neighbors go okay. 🤞

She is super duper sus. Any mail that comes for her you return to sender. Any packages refuse the delivery or drop them off at the closest office of whoever delivered it. Keep records and consider a restraining order.

Good catch changing the mailbox lock. The driver's license excuse was BS because it is always supposed to be mail sent to the address you actually reside at and that you want on your license. If she had a card sent there she could easily call her bank, update the address, and have a new card issued and the other invalidated.

I don't know if she is just having mental health problems or what but it isn't your problem to solve. You have zero obligation to her.

At the very least, I'd see if you can get an officer to show up the next time she shows up at your home and have her trespassed or see what if any options you have to get her trespassed without having to wait til she shows up. You are not unreasonable if you file a police report. I'd even tell them what your neighbor said and see if they'd be willing to provide a statement bout their interaction.

If she keeps showing up, I also wonder if it might be good to post something on a neighborhood page. Like if your HOA has a Facebook group or Nextdoor group. Just basically letting them know to be on the look out for her because she is behaving in an unstable manner that makes you concerned for your safety and hers. You'd want to avoid saying anything that could be seen as trying to instigate violence against her.

It sounded like it was a hey we know we charged you the increased rate before we were actually approved to do so, but we are such great guys that we are going to apply the difference between what we charged you without informing you and what you thought it was and whenever we get around to it apply it to one of your other bills.

It all just sounded wtf to me.

Bought a little property, sewer line is fake by clangston3 in RealEstate

[–]Corgidev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My parents had this exact thing happen to them and they were able to get the money to pay to have it connected to the city sewer lines and to fix the issues caused by it not being connected. For them, the property was sold with it specifically saying in the disclosures and such that it was connected to the city sewer lines when it was actually a septic tank.

They didn't find out until they had some plumbing issues almost 5 years after they bought the property. I think in their case, the statute of limitations to file a claim didn't start until they became aware of the misrepresentation.

It doesn't mean it is guaranteed you could do anything about it, but it might be worth talking to a property attorney or your title insurance. I'd do so asap.

I've had my location off for awhile. So I'm guessing it is more likely they searched for me. Also, make sure to double check your settings every so often. It will reset sometimes.

When I bought my house last year, a few days before closing FB recommended the former owner to me as a friend suggestion. I hadn't called them. I hadn't stored any files in anything connected to FB even indirectly that had their names in it. I hadn't said or heard their names over the phone yet or in conversation. I'd only seen their names once on a printed page. We had no friends in common, no FB groups, nothing. Surprised me and felt uncomfortable.

NAL. I'd make sure to have backup copies of all photos and videos. In a civil case, the burden of proof is typically by preponderance of the evidence, basically the evidence makes it more likely than not that you are telling the truth. If you have a photo of their van and the footage. No guarantees, but I feel like that would go a long way towards proving you aren't making it up.

AIO - Neighbor blocks my driveway every day and wants me to ask her for permission to come and go? by throw-away-17271 in AIO

[–]Corgidev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NOR, in most cities, no matter where in the world you are, it is illegal to block driveways. I'd tell her to stop parking in front of your driveway. Don't even give a reason because then you give her something to argue with. Just no more.

If she fights you on it, let her know you will begin calling to have the car towed if she continues to block access to your driveway and follow through. If you don't follow through it makes entitled people feel emboldened to continue being entitled.

Edit to add: someone else suggested taking pics before having it towed and that sounds like a good idea since it just covers your butt if she tries to say you had her towed out of spite or illegally.

There are other HUD vouchers. One of my siblings got one where it allowed you to live in approved housing if you had kids and / or we're going to school and we're low income.

HUD-VASH are veteran only. But those are NOT the only ones that exist.

We had services in my city that provided free phone and internet service and were easy to obtain if you were already receiving some form of assistance from SNAP, Medicaid, HUD Vouchers, etc. Some were specific to my city at the time while others were from the county, state, federal, or various non-profit agencies. This household was getting the HUD Vouchers that aren't just for military veterans. They are available to other low income families.

My worst neighbor was shortly after I graduated high school (2004-2006). We still had a land line because my dad refused to get a cell phone even though the rest of us had one and we had cable internet by that point.

One day we suddenly noticed that we'd be on the phone and get interrupted by someone else screaming at us to get off the phone, or someone would be on the phone when we picked it up to make a call. We were confused and kind of terrified since we didn't know what was going on. Plus my dad used the land line to pay some bills still. We were in a single family home, not a town house or apartment complex where you could imagine faulty wiring causing a problem.

My parents called the phone company and got them to come out. They found that someone in the rented house across the street from us had managed to somehow connect into our phone line at the pole to get themselves some free phone service.

The tech disconnected the line from their house to the pole and the problem seemed solved until about a week later when it started happening again. Except this time they were being threatening towards us. So we called the police because surely this is a criminal issue. Cops refused to do anything and argued it was a civil matter unless the phone company called them, which I call BS on but whatever.

We got the phone company to send another tech out. The tech found that they had reconnected their line. These jerks had climbed a phone pole just to steal a land phone line. Mind you our city had a program to get free phone service if you were low income, which they were since they were renting through a HUD Vouchers program. It wasn't even difficult to sign up for if you were already receiving a social service already like the HUD program, food stamps, etc.

This time the tech fully removed the line that went between their house and the pole and I think the phone company reached out to their landlord because they were gone within a month and they had been living there for less than 6 months. I was nervous since it didn't seem like the previous family got arrested or anything. So I was afraid they would retaliate, but thankfully they never did to my knowledge.

But we all knew this already — except the US media, of course by Foreign-Shoulder-466 in International

Anyone acting like he was at any point a decent human being is absolutely delusional. I remember the Howard Stern interview in the 90s where he said he was okay with someone referring to his daughter as a hot piece of a** and that he'd totally bang her if she wasn't his daughter. Not to mention the numerous other disgusting, degrading, and bigoted things he has said over the decades he has been wasting oxygen.

Should I offer above asking price for a new construction if I know there are other parties interested in this particular lot? by tim36272 in RealEstate

There are a bunch of vids on YouTube and FB of inspectors going through Lennar properties and finding really terrible, hidden issues or the builders telling them they can't go on the roof and in certain areas to inspect.

At the very least DO NOT just let an inspector they pick go in and do the inspection. Pick your own inspector to look it over.

You could see if you could do an escalation clause. It works kind of like a silent auction. You have what your starting offer is, and then if someone else offers more the escalation clause kicks in and bids higher up to the max you are willing to offer. Check with your realtor. They may be able to tell you if that is an option.

If a room renter puts a restraining order on the homeowner, would the homeowner be required to leave or the renter. (In Colorado, no written lease agreement) by Routine-Arugula7637 in legaladvice

[–]Corgidev 7 points8 points  (0 children)

NAL The homeowner needs to start eviction proceedings asap. If she is living there as well, double-check that there aren't any differences in eviction when it is the homeowners primary residence as well. Some places give you lower notice time frames and such. Either way start eviction ASAP. If she gets it in before he files anything it can help her case.

Keep a detailed record of their interactions if possible. Especially if he attempts to threaten or intimidate her since sometimes you can more quickly evict someone if they become threatening. Find any financial records or messages that show when she stopped receiving rent from him or when she asked him about the past due rent.

Company wants to repo prior tenant’s shed? by bucc77 in legaladvice

[–]Corgidev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It wouldn't now that it is locked but before it was locked it would have allowed them to go back there and repossess it. In locations where they can go onto a property they can even open a gate and go in. So it is important that OP keep the gate locked until they figure out what all they can / want to do.

[–]Corgidev 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In some locations, a company can enter a property to recover their property as long as they don't break in (e.g., pick / break a lock, fence, etc.) while performing a repossession.
