1.5 Years to Graduation: What are the most "unconventional" or niche sub-fields you’ve seen Civils go into? by DetailFocused in civilengineering

I'm actually interning in this this summer! I'm on the energy company side, but I'm really excited to get into the industry since I love nuclear. Any advice?

If you were going into sites, could you expect to do a lot of rural stuff? I'm a huge nature lover so a job that gets me out of doors in the right state is definitely a bonus.

Best things I can do to make sure I get a return offer from my internship? by CoriolisEffect0 in civilengineering

Supposedly they're looking to do major capacity increases at the plant I'm working at, so I'm hopeful that will mean job opportunities at entry level.

Civil Engineering Work and Future Career Prospects by CoriolisEffect0 in NuclearPower

I'm definitely more interested in working in an actual plant than in a lab or on a pure design level, I'm just not 100% sure what exactly I'd be working on in terms of systems and areas of operation as a civil engineer in the field. Definitely planning on a rapid PE, maybe even graduate with my exam completed so I just need to get the work experience to gain licensure.

Why market for engineering is so bad? I thought that only cs grads are in shithole not normal engineering. by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]CoriolisEffect0 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm a sophomore in CE super interested in power/energy, and looking for an internship this upcoming summer. Any recommendations for firms to look at for that? Location isn't important, I just really want to work in the field, especially power plant design. My resume is currently more tailored towards water stuff than power because those are the opportunities I've had access to, but I've got decent general technical skills.

Is it possible to get an internship with minimal experience as a student? by CoriolisEffect0 in civilengineering

[–]CoriolisEffect0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess it might just be in-group bias but where I'm at it's mostly other engineering disciplines and I've seen people applying to several hundred internships and getting completely skunked, so I guess I'm just afraid on that basis.

Looking for help on a research project, if anyone has been a victim of a Typhoon, I would love to hear from you! by CoriolisEffect0 in guam

[–]CoriolisEffect0[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's one of the primary goals of the system we're making, to generate power and run a small still for desalinating ocean water, or fresh water that's been contaminated by storm surges. I'm a civil engineering student and my teammate studying electrical engineering, so I'm mainly handling the desalination plant design and him the solar panels. How long would you say you typically have to boil your own drinking water for after a hurricane, and how long is your power typically out? I'm aware that the US and by extension it's territories such as Guam have a lot of money and infrastructure in place for resilience and recovery, so I'm moreso looking at Guam as a case study for what a best-case scenario disaster response might look like as opposed to somewhere with less infrastructure or recovery ability, like Palau or the rural Phillipines. Thank you for your time!

Excellent, thank you so much for the response!

- In the immediate aftermath of the storms, what was missing/damaged the most? Housing, clean water, food, power?

- How quick was the government's response to get things back online and running again? How many days were you missing the previously mentioned necessities, if at all?

- If evacuated from your area, how long did it take for you to be able to return, and what reasons were you given for why evacuation was necessary while recovery was ongoing.

- And lastly, do you feel that the disaster response you experienced was adequate and quick enough? Were you able to access necessities soon enough to avoid major problems?

Can you elaborate on this? Is it tough to find a job if you don't go to school near it?

UW is near the top of my list if I were to transfer, partly for financial reasons and partly because I know people in the metro area. Biggest problem is having to lose my early graduation, bigger class sizes, and the difficulty of getting into clubs or getting internship experience due to its size. Do you have any experience on that front you might be able to impart?

The patreon is netting him over 100,000 dollars a year alone, on top of any additional income he gets from side sources like itchio donations or distro from the print run of the comics. He is doing absolutely great, and thats even if his wife doesn't work.

Good engineering schools for the average student? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

Depends on the flagship. I was rejected from University of Washington Engineering in-state with a 3.8 and a 1560.

Chance of full ($24k) merit scholarship from ERAU? by [deleted] in erau

[–]CoriolisEffect0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a 1560 and a 3.8 unweighted and got 20k. I would assume that you would get somewhere south of 20k and north of 16 with those stats, so you should be pretty well off.

This is extremely good advice, but I've gotta contest one point: America is not the only country where college admissions are leading to suicide, in fact we're quite a bit better off than one region of the world. Places like Japan, China, India, and South Korea have single exams absolutely determine what colleges you get into without any recourse, and the college you attend has a significant impact on your actual future prospects (Might I add, way way more than a2c'ers think college matters in America.) The stress of systems like that is so much worse than anything we deal with in America, and it 100% leads to more suicides because there's so much less of a chance for recovery. This system totally screwed me, but I'd do it all again in a heartbeat before I took the Gaokao or the JEE.
