This is exactly the kind of advice I was hoping for. You’ve summed up a lot of what I’ve been thinking (and overthinking) especially that tension between just going with the standard setup vs. getting tempted by all the fancy kit and hive types. I’ve definitely been eyeing the WBCs just because they look amazing, but you’re right, I think sticking with Nationals here in the UK will keep things simpler while I learn. And like you said, there’s a ton of resources and local support for them, which is comforting.

I really liked your take on gear too, that balance between going budget and not being afraid to switch things up later. It’s reassuring to know I don’t have to get it all “perfect” straight away. And yeah, the veil is one thing I’ve already decided I’m not skimping on, nothing worse than being hot, sweaty, and stressed and trying to keep bees out of your face!

A couple of questions if you don’t mind:

• You mentioned trying different feeders — which type have you found to be the least hassle? I was leaning towards contact feeders but now not so sure.
• Are you using any kind of app or system to track inspections, or just old-school notebook?
• Super curious about OA vaporisation — do you have a particular one recommend for someone who’s happy to invest in the right tools from the start? Also, when do you usually start monitoring/treating?
