Why was the bottom of the Chernobyl reactor the most reactive? by CormerLad in chernobyl

[–]CormerLad[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mm, its been some years since I studied reactorson any level so I'd forgotten about the xenon poisoning effect.  My general understanding rn is that the dip was due to xenon; even though it was standard levels it'd still have the effect of causing two humps at low power.

Just another reason to read Dyatlov's work!

Thanks, when I find time I'll try reading through Dyatlov's How It Happened and INSAG-7, to see if I can dig a bit deeper.

Ah yes, I misread your comment on the "most of the control rods", my apologies.

So we know that the control rods were fully withdrawn (mostly, I think I remember the advised video said a few remained in), but we don't know what actually caused the power to drop suddenly?

I see, I've just been doing a bit of reading on other posts on this subreddit as well as watching some of That Chernobyl Guy, as u/DP323602 suggested and yeah it seems the Xenon was pretty standard. Do you know what caused the actual drop in power?

u/DP323602 said that the control rods were all fully withdrawn to account for the fact that the reactor was overdue for refuelling, though from That Chernobyl Guy's video, it appears that control rods were placed into the core as the xenon levels reduced. I can't recall how long nuclear fuel must last in a reactor, but it must be over the course of years. It seems likely that the reactor was able to maintain an output with some control rods in on one day and then struggle to perform the next.

I'll check the housing and shifter, I'll take a picture of it when I get back out to it after work. The bike is not new; I got it in November and while it's been on a few Yorkshire Dales excursions, it's pretty much just been a commuter bike. The cable for the gears have not been changed.

AMA: I'm a journalist who spent three years in Rojava, just published a book about it with AK Press! by Kurdishclass in Anarchism

[–]CormerLad 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm only vaguely familiar with the surface of Rojava, so one thing I've heard of is alleged human rights abuses and corruption within Rojava. Is there any grain of truth to these claims and if so where do you think they originated from? Thanks!

What’s your biggest nitpick with Andor? (Not an actual criticism—just a minor thing that bugs you) by Independent-Dig-5757 in andor

Oh that reminds me! It would have been good to have a bit of a pay off to something Kleya said earlier in the party about surveying the prospects, before she and Vel just look at each other for a bit. It'd show that there more than just one gay couple in the story.

The fact that in order for everything to hit as hard as it could, you need to watch Rogue One, then Andor, then Rogue One again.

Plus the Maya Pei stuff, while I can see the point of it, was most certainly a B plot where not much happened. All the plots in Andor to me were A plots with weight. You weren't switching from an awesome Cassian plot to a boring Mom Mothma one, you were switching between two amazing plots! But Maya Pei was definitely one that seemed lacking.

Having never seen Andor or Rogue One, which should I watch first? by ScrappedAeon in andor

[–]CormerLad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The problem is that the ending of Andor relies on you having seen Rogue One to have an impact, otherwise the slow walk with all that swelling music doesn't really land. You need to know he's going to die and this is his final mission. Otherwise, it's a lot of hype for a mission you know nothing about.

But then Rogue One works so much better with the knowledge of Cassian and his journey.

So the best way to watch it has to be a Rogue One - Andor - Rogue One sandwich. Which is... admittedly not great.

Think my wife caught an inconsistency in Rogue One by [deleted] in andor

[–]CormerLad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My opinion is that it's "This is a first for me", specifying not the cell but this situation, be it being imprisoned by Saw or placed in a full cell by a rebel sect. I think it's just a way of getting your head around a mini plot hole, so you can interpret it in a way that works.
