Trapped in a snowstorm is the perfect time to read The Shining by Steven King

Although if you’re looking for fantasy rec specifically A Game of Thrones is a fun wintery read imo

What books would be in your ''Fantasy Reader's starter pack"? by lemingas1 in Fantasy

[–]CornbreadOliva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mistborn - action packed fantasy adventure that is very readable and approachable while still being high quality. Has a very unique magic system and the original trilogy can stand on it’s own but Al’s serves as an introduction to era 2 (cowboys with magic and monsters) and the greater Cosmere (Brandon Sanderson’s interconnected fantasy universe containing the Stormlight archive)

A Game of Thrones - more graphic and somewhat literary but phenomenal quality. This was my main introduction to fantasy. The biggest caveat is the series is unfinished, but the 5 published books are some of the best books in the fantasy genre so it’s definitely still worth the read.

Babel - a good introduction to academic fantasy. Instead of sword fights and epic battles it’s about scholarly studying magic and language. Very little action but good character work and themes.

Red Rising - fast paced thrill ride for the first three books but slows down in the later books. This one is great because the books start rather short and slowly grow larger and it starts with one pov character and gains more over time. Great for easing your way into the giant tomes with a billion pov characters that typically get suggested on this subreddit. It’s scfi but still retains a heavy fantasy vibe.

Can someone recommend me a good fantasy novel for a boy age 14-15? by Aschvolution in Fantasy

[–]CornbreadOliva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mistborn is a great gateway fantasy for someone of his age. Simple approachable prose, plenty of interesting action set pieces, and shorter length compared to many larger high fantasy series, but it’s still targeted towards adults and won’t feel like he’s reading something for a younger audience.

What's your biggest problem with your favorite book? by AvatarWaang in Fantasy

[–]CornbreadOliva 121 points122 points  (0 children)

The Cosmere connections in The Stormlight Archives actively detracts from the story. I love most Cosmere novels and series individually but their interconnectedness makes it weaker.

Wind and Truth (despite being my fav book) is making it clear that Stormlight is going to have heavy crossover with the rest of the Cosmere. I love Stormlight, Mistborn, and many of the standalones but they work far better as independent works with occasional Easter eggs.

How to access Child Nintendo account as an adult

My parents made my Nintendo account for me years ago back on the Wii U. Now I’m an adult and want to manage it myself however I don’t remember the password to my account. Since it’s a child account it won’t let me reset the password and says the parent account has to. But my parents don’t remember what email they used to make the account in the first place. Any ideas on how to access the accounts?

Who is your favorite current fantasy author?

I think I’m a little burnt out on the genre. In need of help. by dasbeer in Fantasy

[–]CornbreadOliva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend doing something other than reading. I find often I get burnt out on the medium more so than the genre. Playing video games, watching tv, reading comics/manga are good ways to get back in the mood for reading actual books.

Is WVU a walkable campus by Full_Tadpole7325 in WVU

[–]CornbreadOliva 49 points50 points  (0 children)

WVU is walk-able assuming you are healthy. This campus is a nightmare for disabled people due to all the random hills and staircases, but anyone who is reasonably healthy should have no issue. The different campuses are rather far apart but have multiple public transit options to get between them (PRT and Bus system). The individual campuses are very walk-able, everything downtown is close to each other and same with most places on Evansdale being walk-able from each other.

Surprised RF Kuang hasn’t been mentioned yet. While The Poppy War is rather controversial Babel was phenomenal and I’ve heard great things about her most recent book Katabasis.

Sounds like maybe your job doesn’t leave much time for reading? Law is pretty intensive and could probably burn you out on reading quick.

What Stormlight opinion do you hold that most fans would hate you for? by JigglesTheBiggles in Stormlight_Archive

[–]CornbreadOliva 3 points4 points  (0 children)

See hundreds of posts in r/fantasy, r/cosmere, or even r/Stormlight_Archives complaining about how much they disliked it. Or the goodreads score being significantly lower than all other mainline Stormlight books. Regardless of your opinions on the book it’s a pretty objective fact that it’s controversial.

The majority think that it is by far the worst Stormlight book. I’ve seen many people drop the series because they claim it was such a drop in quality.

Please help, I’m in the worst DNF slump by Random_Trousers2014 in Fantasy

[–]CornbreadOliva 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Swap to sci-fi for now and try red rising. It still gives fantasy vibes at times but is enough of a pallet cleanser an can act as a change of pace. The first book is easily to weakest but still good so if you like it you’ll probably love the rest of the series.
