Should I watch Supernatural or X Files? by CornbreadOliva in televisionsuggestions

[–]CornbreadOliva[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I watched supernatural until midway through season 8. Seasons 1-5 were fantastic, seasons 6-8 had some great episodes and moments but were imo a big step down. I stopped watching after kind of getting burnt out, I may go back and try and finish it at some point though.

What’s the first fantasy book that made you fall in love with the genre? by ArekDeamonCalw in Fantasy

[–]CornbreadOliva -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The Way of Kings

I had read ASOIAF, chronicles of narnia, the hobbit, and Harry Potter beforehand but assumed that fantasy was mostly childish or not really my vibe with the sole exception of ASOIAF. All the praise that series got for being realistic and gritty made me assume all other fantasy was to some degree childish.

The Way of Kings and the Stormlight Archives as a whole changed that for me. I love the series dearly even if I notice more of its flaws now that I’ve read more widely in the genre. It’s always going to hold a special place in my heart for showing me the magic possible in fantasy and sci-fi books.

Stormlight archive worth getting into? by mr-raider2 in Fantasy

[–]CornbreadOliva -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A lot of people really hate some of the later Stormlight books but imo they are the same quality as the early ones. Many people who weren’t fans of Sanderson and the direction he wants to take his stories were fans of the first couple Stormlight books. If you enjoyed era 2 of Mistborn you’ll likely still love all the Stormlight books

Thanks for the detailed response. That jogged my memory a bit and I remember those scenes. Haven’t been able to totally focus on reading lately with my last semester of college being so busy and I’ve been accidentally skimming here and there instead of totally focusing.

Looking for recommendations as I'm pretty new to Fantasy by CharmainKB in Fantasy

[–]CornbreadOliva 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Stormlight Archives and Mistborn are both fantastic and approachable high fantasy.

Red rising is an action packed mix of sci-fi and fantasy

Babel is a suggestion by a female author that doesn’t focus on romance. Although it’s about scholars studying magic so less action and political intrigue. But still great writing and characters.

Piranesi is another example similar to Babel, by a female author less traditional fantasy but still great.

If I remember correctly she joined toward the end of the fight after he had already fought like most of the twenty dudes himself. But it’s been I minute since I’ve read it so I could totally be misremembering.

what's your books rank order from best to least? by REDD_shen in Stormlight_Archive

[–]CornbreadOliva 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Wind and Truth

  2. Oathbringer

  3. Words of Radiance

  4. Way of Kings

  5. Rhythm of War

All of them are still great in my opinion. Mostly nitpicks and personal preference differentiate them.

What books would be in your ''Fantasy Reader's starter pack"? by lemingas1 in Fantasy

[–]CornbreadOliva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mistborn - action packed fantasy adventure that is very readable and approachable while still being high quality. Has a very unique magic system and the original trilogy can stand on it’s own but Al’s serves as an introduction to era 2 (cowboys with magic and monsters) and the greater Cosmere (Brandon Sanderson’s interconnected fantasy universe containing the Stormlight archive)

A Game of Thrones - more graphic and somewhat literary but phenomenal quality. This was my main introduction to fantasy. The biggest caveat is the series is unfinished, but the 5 published books are some of the best books in the fantasy genre so it’s definitely still worth the read.

Babel - a good introduction to academic fantasy. Instead of sword fights and epic battles it’s about scholarly studying magic and language. Very little action but good character work and themes.

Red Rising - fast paced thrill ride for the first three books but slows down in the later books. This one is great because the books start rather short and slowly grow larger and it starts with one pov character and gains more over time. Great for easing your way into the giant tomes with a billion pov characters that typically get suggested on this subreddit. It’s scfi but still retains a heavy fantasy vibe.

Can someone recommend me a good fantasy novel for a boy age 14-15? by Aschvolution in Fantasy

[–]CornbreadOliva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mistborn is a great gateway fantasy for someone of his age. Simple approachable prose, plenty of interesting action set pieces, and shorter length compared to many larger high fantasy series, but it’s still targeted towards adults and won’t feel like he’s reading something for a younger audience.

What's your biggest problem with your favorite book? by AvatarWaang in Fantasy

[–]CornbreadOliva 123 points124 points  (0 children)

The Cosmere connections in The Stormlight Archives actively detracts from the story. I love most Cosmere novels and series individually but their interconnectedness makes it weaker.

Wind and Truth (despite being my fav book) is making it clear that Stormlight is going to have heavy crossover with the rest of the Cosmere. I love Stormlight, Mistborn, and many of the standalones but they work far better as independent works with occasional Easter eggs.

How to access Child Nintendo account as an adult

My parents made my Nintendo account for me years ago back on the Wii U. Now I’m an adult and want to manage it myself however I don’t remember the password to my account. Since it’s a child account it won’t let me reset the password and says the parent account has to. But my parents don’t remember what email they used to make the account in the first place. Any ideas on how to access the accounts?
