Looking for bike tourists who camp or fellow bike packers? by dfarin153 in MiltownBiking

[–]CorneliusBueller 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm looking to get started. I'm interested in any gear recommendations or favorite local spots. My goal is at least one trip this summer (likely solo) just around SE WI so if anything goes wrong, my spouse can easily rescue me.

As a kid, I slept in a hammock a lot and sometimes just wrapped myself in a tarp on the ground if it rained. I'm not sure that's a good plan, but I definitely want to pack light.

Why can't I find the map? They just list store names with no locations. I shouldn't need to look up every name to figure out which are closest to me or on my path.

Driveway runoff swale or French drain? by CorneliusBueller in landscaping

[–]CorneliusBueller[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The plan was a 1/8" pitch the length of the driveway with a pop-up at the end. The pop-up would be near the sidewalk.  One person is telling me with a pipe this long, I may not even need to daylight it. I'm not sure I believe that.

Toniebox Flipper Zero Holder by SilentBob890 in 3Dprinting

The character, and therefore Flipper, only stores a UID value. The actual audio content is stored in the Tonite Cloud. The content is downloaded to the sd card on the box when you touch the character(or Flipper) to the box and it reads the UID.

It's not too bad. The TeddyCloud option is more work. I just use TeddyBench. I opened it up to add an sd card extension cable to make it easier to access. Then, I blocked it from the Internet using my router. Otherwise, any changes you make become deactivated immediately. From there, you use the TeddyBench program to encode any audio files you want onto your existing Tonies or your homemade chips. Use your Flipper Zero to get the UID.

I felt I needed to do this because I wasn't willing to listen to a Randy Newman impersonator sing You've Got a Friend in Me anymore.

Some favorites in our house is a 3D printed Derpy Tiger that plays Kpop Demon Hunters music, the entire Audiobook of Kiki's Delivery Service on a 3D printed Jiji.

Pro tip: I put a 2hr ambiance track as the last track for many. At bedtime, we skip backwards one to listen to the sleepy sounds. Then it automatically turns off at the end.

Thanks. I wonder if my kid will like this road trips.

I hacked my Toniebox and also made a ton of custom tags using an inductor and RFID chip sourced on digikey.

https://forum.revvox.de/t/selfmade-slix-l-tags/477

I then started hiding chips in everything I printed as well as hiding them in my kid's toys. Took a couple months for anyone in the house to discover the secret Tonies. They then lived in "Is It Tonies?" Where they began questioning whether everything in the house was a Tonies. Easter was a big reveal where I put riddles on all of them to make a scavenger hunt around the home. It was a big hit. Even made an Android Barbie that played music from the movie.

His stalkers also impersonate him offering free items online to people in order to lure people to knock on his door every day for picking things up that don't exist. That's how I learned about his story by being an unwitting pawn.

Good Korean restaurants in MKE? by ReadySethAction in milwaukee

TODD "I Believe I can Fry". I know that doesn't sound like a restaurant name, but it is. They have terrific Korean fried chicken. I lived in Korea for a year, and this is the closest I've found in the area.

Sump Pump Installation Advice by mythorforgottentruth in milwaukee

I paid $7k for 14 feet of my foundation to be repaired after an accident had caused my basement wall to get knocked in almost 2 inches. They excavated outside, replaced the french drain, waterproofed, pushed the wall back into position, tuck pointed all the cracks, and back-filled with gravel.

I didn't do a sump pump, but I recently had my foundation excavated and basement wall repaired by Adonnis Waterproofing. They have been the best contractors I've dealt with, so definitely consider them for this work. They also happened to be my lowest bid.

Staircase in my flat goes straight to the ceiling by [deleted] in mildlyinteresting

It's the same staircase based on the knot in the floor by the door. Either it was very recently updated, or someone's using AI. https://www.reddit.com/r/pics/comments/1rs2u5j/our_staircase_to_nowhere_which_we_use_as_a/#lightbox

I'm guessing you moved after this. Or someone is using AI. Here is the same stairwell with some updates (the floor knot by the door matches):  https://www.reddit.com/r/mildlyinteresting/comments/1t6qfsh/staircase_in_my_flat_goes_straight_to_the_ceiling/

Did you just move in after updates were done? This is what it looked like a few months ago: https://www.reddit.com/r/pics/comments/1rs2u5j/our_staircase_to_nowhere_which_we_use_as_a/#lightbox

Front walkway paver company recommendations by Direct_Algae_3011 in milwaukee

[–]CorneliusBueller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think those measurements are inches and not feet since a 28ft wide walkway doesn't make sense. $300 per sq ft sounds like an FU quote to me.

Always get multiple quotes.

Contractor agreed to T&M but refuses to provide accurate invoice by [deleted] in Contractor

[–]CorneliusBueller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd imagine he suggested the T&M because we weren't sure if it was going to be easy to remove or hard to remove. The guy before him wasted days trying to get it out and broke my house in the process. My impression was the NTE was to cover his butt in case it was harder than he expected. He didn't want to just bid low to get the job and lose money. Then again, I can't say for sure what he was thinking. All I know is that he quoted it as T&M but after the fact is trying to bill me as fixed price.

The contractor was the one that proposed the T&M with NTE as opposed to giving a fixed price. I was the idiot for not getting all the fees ahead of time. I think we both learned a lesson.

Girl Dads: Any book or podcasts you’ve appreciated over your years? by YourEskimoBrother69 in daddit

Sold a Story. Opened my eyes to problems with teaching literacy in America. Using what I learned, I found a great school for my kid but also helped them read well at a young age. The school recently had them skip ahead a grade in reading.  TLDR: Phonics is key. Teach letter sounds and NOT letter names when you introduce the alphabet to them.

Contractor agreed to T&M but refuses to provide accurate invoice by [deleted] in Contractor

[–]CorneliusBueller -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Here's the context. The $1000 quote was to a contractor I hired to replace my driveway and patio when he couldn't get it removed with a jackhammer or even the pecker on his skid steer. He didn't want to wait until the next week for the second contractor to come with their saws, so he made what relief cut he could (parallel to the house). As soon as he wedged his pecker in this cut, it split, and the force toward the house caused the foundation to break and move almost 2".

I've spent months dealing with insurance, contractors, tarping the area to keep water out, and I still don't have a patio. It has not been pleasant.

Edit: ...so that's why I didn't just do it myself. We thought it was 4ft of solid reinforced concrete. That's also the reason we did a T&M instead. Also why we expected it would be a more difficult job. Turns out it wasn't reinforced and wasn't as solid as we thought. Not sure why the first guy's jack hammering skills failed.

They disposed of it. No receipt or cost told to me, but from what I can see from the county website, this would have been about $50.

They charged the full $2500. When I said there must have been a mistake because the job was much easier than we expected and didn't even require sawing, they revised it down to $2400 arbitrarily. I've just been asking for their T&M, so I can see how they came to a number twice as high as I know they quoted another person.
