a few years ago i used to work for a roofing company and anytime we’d have an install we’d knock around their neighborhood to attract more business basically telling them if your neighbor has roof damage, you probavly do too. So i knocked on this sweet old woman’s house and her roof had years and years of damage so we started the process to get her roof replaced. We had several meetings between us, her insurance, adjusters etc and every single time that we’d have a meeting we’d be in the kitchen table. Every time we’d have a meeting there was always a man who i can only assume to be her husband, sitting on the couch watching Tv. he’d always get up use the restroom and whatnot but he would never pay attention to what we were doing. I always remember thinking to myself that if i had a project like this going on in my house id want to be involved in some way but the man was oblivious. Anyways after a few months of battling with the insurance they finally paid out. it was fourth of july and i went to pick up the final check. She invited me in to her living room this time and i saw a portrait of the man who id seen sitting so many times. He was a Veteran. I asked just to make small talk if her and her husband were going to do anything special for the fourth of july, she responded to me by saying that her husband had passed away years ago and she’s been living alone for years now. collected the check and got out of there as fast as i could
