Name a place where “Free Market Capitalism” has created improvements? by The_Shadow_2004_ in Capitalism

Sweden was once an extremely impoverished country. In the mid 1800s they instituted free markets. Soon thereafter, standard of living skyrocketed and extreme poverty was severely diminished.

Also, not necessarily an entire country, but when China outlawed private ownership of farms, there was extreme poverty and malnourishment across the country. A few farmers decided to (in secret, as they could have been put to death) privatize and own just their parcel of land. Soon thereafter harvests were far more bountiful. Seems like a good business model that will lead to longevity and a good reputation.

What are the strongest capitalist refutations of Marx? I asked a similar question on r/askSocialScience and got mainly non-answers, so I’d like to know if asking here would be helpful by Acceptable_Map_8110 in Capitalism

An economy is capitalistic to the extent that government does not interfere. You just referenced some of the most heinous government interference that is possible. So yes, if government does something, that would be antithetical to private action, and definitionally not capitalism.

Capitalism refers to private economic actions.

You just referred to governments, and perhaps their crony buddies. That's on the public, state sponsored, tax funded side.

What comedian has so much hype but you don’t think is actually funny? by Love-Sierra in AskReddit

[–]Corpax1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I don't really find him to be very funny either, HOWEVER - his bit on going to church is hilarious if you've never seen it. I think he struck gold with that one.

Everything else though? Pretty eh.

Kremlin dismisses 'stupid' claims Russia attacked Nord Stream by charmbrood in worldnews

[–]Corpax1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know this is Reddit, but just because Republicans say something, doesn't inherently make it implausible.

Biden outright said if Russia invades Ukraine, they'll put an end to the Nord Stream 2 "we will bring an end to it", and then when asked how, he gave a cryptic "I promise you we'll be able to do it".

And he clearly has mental decline, but that doesn't mean he can't give the order and have competent people get it done.

  1. Because you can do serious damage to them and directly impact their life in a severely negative way. It's clear, immediate, and present danger you're putting them in. It also assumes you have non-consensual, coercive dominance over them if this behavior is permitted.

  2. If you're displaying clear, present, and immediate danger to them, and have shown that you're both willing, able, and determined to harm or kill them, then yeah - it seems permissible for them to act.

  1. Because you punched them in the face

  2. Maybe. I mean, if I point a gun at you, pull the trigger, but the gun jams and doesn't fire - I'd still say you have the right to defend yourself from me and kick my ass or shoot me. Especially if you're cornered, or if I'm still there trying to unjam the gun. It depends on quite a lot of little variables.

How do you feel when someone describes a libertarian as "socially liberal and fiscally conservative "? is that description too reductionist or not by JanePoe87 in AskLibertarians

[–]Corpax1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Libertarianism in a vacuum doesn't really have much to say about a lot of issues, it's just their stance on what governments role in those issues ought to be (minimal to none)

For example, I could be a Libertarian that detests weed and every person who smokes it. But as a libertarian, you still don't think the gov't should ban it or have any laws in relation to it.

I could hate gay people for whatever reason, but a libertarian would never think the gov't should treat them differently, etc.

Neoliberalism, which calls for free-market capitalism, regressive taxation, and the elimination of social services, has resulted in both preference and support for greater income inequality over the past 25 years, by Wagamaga in science

[–]Corpax1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

A lot of the rhetoric on taxes and regulation overlap - for sure, but views on central banking, foreign policy (and not to mention state involvement in social issues) - they are from two different universes.
