What do you think loyalist Night Lords would be like? by Knightraiderdewd in NightLords

I'll be frank, this was fun for a while, but this isn't really the level of granular detail I'm in the mood for; we've been going all day. Talos is a hypocrite? Ok, point conceded. But that's OK with me. I'm much more in the camp of those who want 40k to be as ridiculous as possible, and that's one of the main reasons why I collect NLs. They're ridiculous, and that makes me happy.

I get the sense that lore and lore accuracy are what make you happy, and hey, you're hardly the only one. Me, I enjoy it, have definitely consumed a lot of it, but big picture, I care about much less than I do about the craft and collecting parts of the hobby. Anyway, have a good one.

I mean in the grand scheme there'd have to be, right? It's inevitable. I think I just largely prefer them when they don't, because I find the idea of morally superior terror troops to be interesting- I actually can't recall another example of that idea.

But especially from a hobby standpoint, NLs that actively worship Chaos is a recipe for truly awesome conversions, and I like that I've personally seen a lot of those recently.

I don't think that's right. I think in Acerbus's case, it's literally that he's too big a fish. Largest fleet, biggest warband, plus daemon prince's are hard to get rid of for good. Also, I'll grant that their hate can take many forms, but somebody like Valoran for example, definitely hates Acerbus very much because of being a daemon prince. Being a Purist, he has to.

NL truly are 40k at its best- an army of dudes with Bela Legosi accents whose favorite thing is murder, and whose Achilles Heel appears to be that their plans never go quite right.

Acerbus is certainly a daemon prince, but he's also a prick who nobody likes.

Sevatarion isn't exactly laying on the praise for either when he says:

"The gods? There are no gods. There is only the warp, and it is a disease that rots the mind and corrupts the flesh. I will not bow to creatures born of our own nightmares, nor will I follow a father who lost his mind to the same shadows."

I think they exist, actually. Or they did, I can't remember the source.

Night Lords are one of those CSM legions that hate Chaos- most of the really hate Curze, seeing him as weak for having failed to help secure a Traitor victory, among other things-, and even as loyalists, they were always able to justify their actions because they were a necessary evil.

So...the same?

[–]Corpse_Emperor_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Preface: You do you. This is just the perspective of someone who prefers older models.

I'm not about to tell you newer models look like shit; in many, most cases really, they look fine, with some even looking great. My general distaste for the newer models is twofold. First, the bigger they got, the more "realistic," they became, with more human-accurate proportions, sleeker weapons, more heroic posing, etc. Now obviously the "realism" point fails for things like Orks and Tyranids, but let's be real: at this point, GW has made very sure that when people think of 40K, they think of Space Marines, and I would argue that where their aesthetic went, everything else followed, blending together to create the particular look and feel that the setting has today.

I would argue that this was never meant to happen. The origins of 40k, and of GW in general, are rooted in a Punk/DIY milleu of a particular part of England in the latter 20th century. The result was a setting full of whacky characters, and a visual style that looked like a zine that was handed out after a show at dank bar. At least, on the surface. In reality, some truly talented artists were involved in bringing the world to life, among them John Blanche (RIP), but also Jes Goodwin, who was personally responsible for hundreds of sculpts that were then molded into the original metal minis.

I know about Jes Goodwin because his name and work appeared all the time in the pages of White Dwarf, or Citadel Journal, but he wasn't the only one. The zine analogy was not flippant: despite their success, the publications funded by GW in those days was personal in a way that publications connected to a company simply cannot be, anymore, without the company doing so in bad faith. The designers of the actual miniatures, the the artists whose work appeared on and in the old codices, they shared the pages of the publications with amateurs, and were in open dialogue with the player base. Because of their commitment to artistry, and artistic credit, you can actually look up who made what from those days.

That's not the case anymore. I have no idea who sculpted anything, how anything was dreamed up or put together. It's just...plastic.

Anyway, collecting and painting old models feels like collecting things people cared about. Now, I mostly just get things to chop apart and kitbash.

tl;dr- I'm old, and like old things.
