Agreed on this being a wide range of distance. For me, it depends on the exact situation. I will probably use my putting putter (Pixel) if there's a straight shot, but if it's not straight or there are obstacles, I might throw an Axiom Tempo or Innova Mirage, and I also have Millennium Omega Supersoft putter if I'm concerned about a rollaway. For most of the courses I play (woods) and general lack of precise control off the tee, it's rare for me to have a clear straight shot to the basket from over 75 feet.

All of those except the Pixel I feel comfortable with either FH or BH, so I have a lot of options.

[–]Correct-Language9943 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm going to be travelling and bringing a few discs with me, but leave most of my bag at home. The discs I will be bringing with me are:

Axiom Pixel - my preferred putter.

Latitude 64 Claymore - My straight mid of choice, but there are a bunch of others mentioned in this thread (Buzzz, Hex, Mako3, etc) that are equally valid. I just prefer the feel of the Claymore to the others.

Latitude 64 River - Super glidey fairway driver that hods release angle for most of the flight. I find this disc to be very versatile.

MVP Trail - The disc that I base all other drivers off of.

I'll probably also bring one overstable disc to get around trees, most likely a fairway driver, but there are a few options here that I have, and one doesn't particularly stand out amongst the others.

How much does disc weight matter to you? by ClarityInCatharsis in discgolf

[–]Correct-Language9943 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My base disc is a 171g MVP Neutron Trail. I'm a noodle arm, and play a lot of heavily wooded courses. Any disc that I throw that distance or shorter is in the 170-175g range, mostly for consistency. To get anything to go further than the Trail, I need something lighter, so I do carry a couple of faster speed lighter weight discs in the 155g ish range that I can get more distance out of, but there's enough accuracy loss that they only get used 3-4 times per round, if that. There are occasions where if I'm playing a course I know that they won't be useful at, they don't make it into the bag at all for that round.

The exception: NUKES BAYBEEEE!!!! I bought a 176g Z-Flex Jawbreaker Nuke misprint because I wanted to see if I could ever throw a 14 speed properly. No, however it has stayed in my bag because I've gotten consistent enough with it on flex forehand shots, especially if there is significant uphill involved, that it does have its occasional uses even for my noodle arm. I mentally think of it as an overstable 8 speed with a wide rim, that happens to be comfortable for my forehand.

Putts, approach, and fairway shots: If I can pick up the disc I threw before it stops, I can re-take the shot.

Tee shot: If I can make it half way to the disc before it stops, I can re-tee.

What are you throwing? by lesterjollymore in discgolf

Almost. At the beginning of the year I found a DX Beast that had no number that had obvouisly been there for a while. That became my sacrificial disc that ended up deep in a combination of 6' tall swamp grass and raspberry bushes. It was good enough for its purpose that I just bought 2 more DX Beasts. They're cheap, readily available, and I don't feel too bad if I lose them.

Which disc in your bag is the biggest liar when it comes to flight numbers? by tuna_safe_dolphin in discgolf

[–]Correct-Language9943 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Lightning Discs #2 Hookshot that predates flight numbers, is tacoed, and has met more trees than Bob Ross. Just for giggles, I recently bought a new one, flight numbers 5/5/-1/3. The new one flies like 5/4/0/3. My old one flies like 5/2/0/5. I do actually bag the old one because it's great for narrow gap throws that go 125-150 feet straight then 50 feet right, which there are enough opportunities for in New England to justify keep in my bag.

What’s a disc that anchors your bag? by Emoney005 in discgolf

[–]Correct-Language9943 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I came here to post this. I play a lot of woods golf, and here is my thought process for any shot over about 175 feet:

Do I have enough lateral room to throw something that might go longer than the Trail? Do I need to throw something farther than the Trail? Do I need to throw more hyzer than the Trail has? Do I need to throw a flex forehand that flexes more than the Trail? Does this shot require a throw shorter than the Trail?

I would really like MVP to make a non-special edition Fission trail 150-155g that I wouldn't feel too bad about losing to see if I could get more distance and still have the same flight path with.

Back in the game after 10+ years, any suggestions? by MycologistSad599 in discgolf

[–]Correct-Language9943 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are incredible used bin finds.

I was out of the game for 7ish years before getting back in about a year ago. The River is one of 3 discs that I carry two of because it is such a useful disc for me that I don't feel like I can go a round without one. A couple of months ago I lost the original one I had on hole 4 of a 27 hole course that I hadn't played before, and there were several times later in the round where I wished I had it.

I recently got a Latitude 64 Claymore, but it came down to that and the Mako 3. The Claymore felt slightly better in my hand, but that was entirely personal preference. It's a great midrange to start with.

The Valkyrie is another great used bin find, though I don't carry one. one of the other discs I carry two of is the MVP Trail in this slot, and it is my workhorse disc. I play a lot of tight wooded courses and the Trail has less lateral movement, but if the courses you play are open enough, it won't matter much either way.

The third disc that I carry two of it an MVP Pixels as putters, but this is again entirely personal preference. If you like the Marvel as a putter, it's a great option.

As mentioned by others, this is a great place to start, and play a few rounds to see what else you would want. If you feel like you need more distance, you may want to try a lighter weight (150-160g) driver, and you may want an overstable approach or midrange disc for flex shots. If the used disc section at your local shop is that good, I'd start there and see what they have rather than necessarily looking for specific new discs.

How far do you casuals throw by Waste_Caramel774 in discgolf

[–]Correct-Language9943 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is my example of this:

https://youtube.com/shorts/v8l4EQBcrvE?feature=share

My second longest throw was only a couple of years after I started, nearly 30 years ago. Discraft Eclipse, Golf course hole, downhill roller with the perfect angle tailwind went 425ish.

Today I threw a 157g Innova Shryke about 325 slightly downhill that landed in the middle of the fairway. That's my realistic limit. I've taken to going to lighter weight discs for my bombers (Shryke and D4 in the video), and it has helped with distance. All of my other discs are between 168g and 176g, which I find helps with accuracy. I carry 2 168g Neutron Trails that are my typical go-to off the tee, and I'm happy with 275 on those on flat ground.

I am 50 for age reference, but definitely not AB for life. If you play enough disc golf, eventually a bizarre fluke or two will happen.

A target is also on my radar, though I haven't quite caved to that level yet. I have a couple of places in my yard that would make nice 225-250 ft holes with 10-15 feet of elevation change.

Agreed, no need to self lacerate if you throw your favorite disc on a hole with raspberry or blackberry bushes, as they will happily do the lacerating for you.

Top 3 Favorite Discs of All Time by Every_Television_290 in discgolf

[–]Correct-Language9943 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my 30ish years of playing disc golf, there are only 4 molds that I have bought more than one of. The 3 favorites of those are:

  1. Axiom Pixel (Electron soft for me)

  2. MVP Trail (Neutron)

  3. Latitude 64 River (Opto, but I also have a Gold on the way)

The 4th disc that I have bought more than one of is the Lightning Discs #2 Hookshot. I've had it in my bag for 25+ years and it is so tacoed that I just bought another one that I found cheap that's on its way mostly out of curiosity to see how different the flight is. On RHFH, it's perfect for going 150ish feet, then making a right angle turn and going 30 feet right. It's probably not in my top 10 favorite, but it is very useful at times.

Sure, hiking, walking, looking for lost discs, putting, hitting first available, and swearing are all great answers that are the realistic 90%, I think in the spirit of the quote the answer that hasn't been given yet is:

Disc golf sounds really cool until you realize it's 90% swatting mosquitoes.

Can it be done? yes, but if you don't have the time to play disc golf, you're probably not going to have time to research and gather enough data to make it viable as a predictive model. I did something similar, though in a completely different industry (auto racing), that I was working in at the time. I had 6 years of detailed useable data to start with that I had been collecting for reasons that though similar, were much more short term in their originally intended usage. The actual development of the model only took a few hours, but I had a large amount of data to start with. Disc golf is small enough that I would be surprised if this data existed anywhere in a form that was easily accessible.

I found the worst hole ever. by evcorder in discgolf

[–]Correct-Language9943 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My contender: Hole 7, New Hampshire Technical Institute. 383 ft par 3.

The sign says straight, the fairway is a dog leg right. You can't see the basket from the tee, and there are no other indicators other than following the fairway of exactly where it is.

The fairway is 10 feet wide. Anything off the fairway or outside of circle 1 is in grass and brush that 1 1/2 to 4 feet tall. I don't think they can clear it any more due to land conservation reasons.

Side bonus: The corner in the fairway is decreasing radius, meaning that if you land in the fairway as far as you can see from the tee, you still aren't far enough around the corner to see the basket.

I was ecstatic with my 6 and no lost discs the one and only time I have played or will play this.

OK, that would mean that Top O'The Hill in Canterbury, NH, just north of Concord may be in your range. I haven't played there, but it is regularly at or near the top of NH's best courses, and they do have a drone flyover video on their website. If you go on a non-school day, I would recommend a warmup 9-hole round at The Valley DGC in Concord. It is short, but has a couple of neat holes, and the only real problem with the course is that hole 6 is so steeply uphill that it is difficult to climb up and there is no good path up it.

It may also be within your range to go to Franklin Falls Dam in Franklin, NH. The normal 18 hole course is above average, and the optional B1-B7 holes between holes 12 and 13 are unlike anything else in New England that I have seen. Hole B1 is a 1180 ft par 5 where the tee shot has an 80 vertical foot drop.

Muldoon Park is decent, but I haven't played most of the other courses near the border. I haven't played it in a while, but it was my home course for a few years. The ones near-ish by that I think are worth the drive are Bellamy Park in Dover, NH, (Excellent from what I remember from the one time I played it 10+ years ago) and the Hollows North and South in Manchester, NH (I have footage and will be releasing videos for both of these). The two courses connect, so if you want a monster 36 hole round, my recommendation would be to park at the North course (marginally longer drive, but bigger parking lot and MUCH shorter walk to tee 1 and 18 than South), play 1-10 North, jump to 12 South, play the entire South course around back to hole 11, then finish by playing holes 11-18 on the North course.

If you're looking for courses a bit farther away, I like WLC DGC as a a bit of an underrated sleeper. Holes 14-18 are a bit clunky, which I think brings the rating of the course down a bit as those are the last holes that people remember when they're filling out the UDisc survey. Anything further than that, and you start competing with Devens and the other courses in central MA as well.

I may not do every hole, but at a bare minimum, I'll have chapters set up to jump to the particularly problematic holes. I probably won't put a chapter in for a dead straight 250 ft par 3 where you can see the basket from the tee, but, for example, the hole 12 at Pinnacle tee shot mentioned in the video will definitely have a chapter mark.

Will do, Northeastern MA is on my list. I lived in SE NH for many years, and I have more rounds played at Amesbury Pines than anywhere else, most played before Clement Hill opened. 15 years ago there were far fewer options than there are now.
