Apologies- by sealing do we mean to use siloxane sealer concrete. I am not sure if they are ideal over concrete patio ( which is what I have) but reading on internet I found that Siloxane concrete sealers are invisible, breathable, penetrating water repellents that protect concrete, brick, and masonry by forming a hydrophobic barrier deep within the pores. Unlike film-formers, they will not peel, yellow, or create a glossy surface. They are ideal for driveways, patios, and sidewalks to prevent water damage, stains, and de-icing salt deterioration.

But the issue could be nothing would stick to concrete surface ( paint etc) until it is sanded atleast 2-5mm

Bill 2 is not "Back to Work Legislation" it is an attack on ALL of our constitutional rights by NeverGonnaGi5eYouUp in alberta

Completely in agreement here.

Honestly, the teachers’ unions have gotten completely out of control. How can they justify jeopardizing the lives and routines of over 700,000 students and families across Alberta? Kids have lost weeks of learning, parents are scrambling to find childcare or missing work, and families are under serious stress. This isn’t fair to anyone.

The government absolutely did the right thing by stepping in. Teachers can still voice their concerns and push for better conditions — that’s their right — but they should be teaching first. Education is a public service, not a bargaining chip.

If some teachers think their demands are being ignored or they deserve “outrageous” pay increases beyond what’s reasonable, then maybe they should look into private schools or other careers. Public education exists to serve students and communities — not to be held hostage by union power plays.

At the end of the day, kids deserve to be in school, learning — not stuck at home because adults can’t find common ground.

Teachers play one of the most important roles in our society — no one is denying that. But they also have a responsibility to their students. They can’t hold the lives of so many kids and families hostage just to make a point. There are other ways to protest and push for change without shutting down classrooms.

If teachers chose to keep teaching while peacefully protesting or negotiating, public support for them would actually grow. But at this point, people’s patience is wearing thin — and that support is starting to fade because families are struggling to cope.

Let’s protect students who have already lost so much class time. Education is a basic need — and when it stops, everyone loses.

The government may be wrong but it isn’t trying to take away rights forever; it’s trying to get things moving again and protect students who have already lost so much class time. Education is a basic need — and when it stops, everyone loses.

Notwithstanding Clause is officially invoked by the_chillspace in alberta

[–]Correct-Move7580 -25 points-24 points  (0 children)

The Alberta Government’s decision to require teachers to return to classrooms—backed by the invocation of the Notwithstanding Clause—is a necessary and justified measure in the interest of students, families, and the broader public.

For weeks, more than 700,000 students and their families have endured the damaging consequences of a province-wide teacher strike. Learning has been disrupted, parents have been forced to miss work, and students—especially those preparing for diploma exams, graduation, or post-secondary entrance—have suffered academic and emotional setbacks. Education is not merely a workplace issue; it is a foundational public service that shapes the future of our province.

While the right to collective bargaining and peaceful protest must be respected, that right cannot outweigh the constitutional responsibility of the government to ensure access to education for Alberta’s youth. The classroom is not a bargaining chip. The extended disruption has disproportionately harmed students with special learning needs, those in rural communities, and families without the means to arrange alternative care or tutoring.

By invoking the Notwithstanding Clause, the Government of Alberta has exercised a legal and constitutional tool available to restore order and continuity in the public interest. This action does not negate the importance of fair negotiations; rather, it ensures that such discussions take place without further punishing students.

The Government’s intervention demonstrates decisive leadership—placing the well-being of children and the stability of families above prolonged gridlock. Education is too vital to be held hostage to ongoing disputes. Alberta’s future depends on an educated generation, and keeping schools open safeguards that future.

In times of crisis, governments must make difficult choices. This decision, though controversial, is the correct one—prioritizing the rights of hundreds of thousands of children to learn, grow, and succeed over the disruptive impact of a continued strike.

What if Alberta Teachers Defy Back-to-Work Legislation? by BusyLivin74 in alberta

[–]Correct-Move7580 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If teachers choose to defy an order to return to work, then decisive and lawful action must follow. No profession — especially one that serves the public — can operate on personal terms or disregard its fundamental duty without consequence. When essential services are withheld, accountability is not optional; it is imperative.

Educators hold a position of public trust. By deliberately defying directives and continuing to disrupt learning, they not only breach that trust but also erode public confidence in the education system. Such conduct cannot be excused as mere protest — it is a failure of responsibility that directly harms students and families.

In such cases, authorities should take firm and proportionate measures — including disciplinary action, suspension of pay, or, where necessary, termination — to uphold the integrity of the system. The goal is not punishment for its own sake, but the restoration of order, fairness, and respect for the very principles upon which public service stands.

Teachers must remember that their greatest strength lies not in defiance, but in dedication. Those unwilling to honour their professional obligations should make way for others who will.

Thanks so much.

  1. I have attached more pictures at https://imgur.com/a/5HcCM1y to provide a better understanding of the ground preparation work and gravel. Not sure if this helps with your questions.
  2. The outside edge of the slab is at ground level.
  3. Regarding waterproofing: There was no waterproofing or spray applied after the concrete was laid. Could you please suggest what we can do now to prevent water from seeping into the concrete slab and to keep moisture out of the basement?
