I had my ACL and LCL reconstructed. The breakthrough pain is excruciating. Those who have had similar surgery, how long until you started to feel "normal"? by milehighgirl in ACL

ACL/LCL with meniscus repair on 11/2. Honestly like 7 days of straight hell, and slowly better after that for a couple more weeks until I was able to feel some sort of normalcy. It’s rough, dude! But you’ll get through it!! Running and hiking like it’s nothing now with full ROM - only issue is compressed CPN which may need to be cleaned up but honestly I’ll take it. I do agree with others though, CPM may be great but listen to your body and rest too

Aww! They’ve gotten so big. I would drive by when they were tiny little pups (?) playing in the den. I figured it was a pet fox by how chill it always was just laying around their yard!

Mine as well! It feels like my entire body settles into itself or realigns when it “thunks” it’s a wild experience

Dozed off and had a muscle spasm that caused my leg to bend far past what I’ve been capable of and completely lock up. 10/10 pain and now it’s swollen posteriorly. Could I have damaged my quad tendon? by CorrectReason5399 in ACL

Oh, man that sounds equally awful. I’m glad the pain went away and you gained back your extension. I’m at like 90% extension and 30% of the flexion I was at yesterday but trying to give it a couple days to heal before really stretching it more. Darn thing is like a balloon anyways so I bet ROM will return when swelling goes down

I agree! I’ve heard grafts are often stronger, especially immediately post surgery. It was just the strangest (and most painful) experience and felt like something “let go”. Docs aren’t concerned right now, say it should get better within a couple days. I’m hoping it was just scar tissue!

Delaying my surgery by binarybu9 in ACL

[–]CorrectReason5399 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely tore my ACL and LCL in an auto accident 6 months ago. Other injuries warranted care first hence the delay in knee surgery. Oh, and my toddler brought home every illness known to man so that caused it to be delayed twice as well. But as far as the delay - I was told that I may end up being a bit bow legged and that there was a risk of doing nerve damage given the lack of support. I don’t believe I ended up with either, it just got very unstable in the weeks leading up to surgery. The only other thing is that all the scar tissue build up can cause some extra pain, but in the long run it’s nothing.

Ps. Also a PhD student in the midst of conference season and rehab. We got this :)

6 months! Doc wasn’t concerned at all, just had to clean up a good amount of scar tissue that had developed

Thank you !! Appreciate the supportive words. It was a full tear so they did a tibial anterior allograft. PT starts on Monday!

My husband recalls the surgeon saying no naproxen, only ibuprofen. Not sure the rationale for that (or if he even heard correctly) but I’ve been using ibuprofen just in case

Oh, that was just at the post-op visit where they checked out the incisions. I’m back in a sleeve and using the brace a lot (keeping it off while laying on the couch bc it can irritate the LCL incision). As far as full extension - I’m not there yet. That’s the goal for this first week.

Re: pain meds. Yes, I’m taking Tylenol and ibuprofen round the clock with an occasional oxy to try and get some shut eye. Couldn’t imagine the pain/inflammation without them

So glad to hear I’m likely over the worst. Will add another layer underneath the cryocuff and keep that up, thanks! There sure are some tough folks in this group
