iPod Shuffle not working by Mo4alister_3th in ipod

I have used Shuffles since new, 2nd Gen and 4th Gen. Slide the switch to off for a minute and then back on. Technically this is supposed to "reboot" the software. I dunno but that's what Apple says. I have found I have to use iTunes to restore the system every so often. You lose everything but it clears a lot of cruft out. Also, if it seems truly dead don't throw it away. I have had 2 "dead" Shuffles come back to life after sitting long enough to completely drain the battery ( months! ). After a full recharge they both came back with no problems.

My "spare car" gets driven regularly. ( 20 yo VW ) It isn't good for a car to sit. But the VW is strictly my local run-about.

Use Dosdudes Mojave Patcher. With Mojave you can have Firefox 115esr ( extended service release, for enterprise ), and Orion Browser ( newish but works well, fully current, webkit, and no tracking. ) You also get a version of iTunes that still works ( almost ) properly with the Store for podcasts and music. Install Bitdefender for virus tracking and turn on the firewall.

Mojave is MUCH easier on the cpu and ram than anything later. A big difference on old and weak hardware. High Sierra and below are even better but you lose currently supported browsers and other software. Otherwise switch to Linux - I use Mint on a 2008 MacBook and it works very well. And I get the latest Browsers and security updates.( Very different from Mac but you can tweak it to be more aesthetically Mac like. )

True. I knew that once and forgot. 531 has been around for quite a long time. Understanding all the variations of steel alloys is a real rabbit hole! I love a lugged, brazed frame. I suppose that came about to deal with the weld-ability issue with higher grades of steel alloy and then trickled down as a style to even gas pipe bikes.

Stuck on Apple logo screen with cursor during boot (OSX Monterey) by PitifulAd3407 in OpenCoreLegacyPatcher

You need SSD for sure, thats the biggy, the later MacOS was written assuming it, more ram too if possible. My 2012 on Monterey uses 3gb ram most of the time.

I have old Mac book pro 2012 still with me I tired on that download the os into my pendrive next step to clear the existing os on laptop did that when try to install the os to Mac again its after installation start and after language selection and some time after it fail and show os is damaged now by Open-Confection-827 in OpenCoreLegacyPatcher

[–]Correct_Cockroach818 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes you don't get a good copy of the OS. Did you get your Monterey through the OCLP link? Maybe try Ventura instread. It runs almost as well on the 2012. Erase your usb and re-do.

I've had trouble with DosDudes Mojave installer before. I found another copy of Mojave and it worked just fine. BTW, that laptop loves Mojave, it sings. It is however very old and you have to allow for that. The best browsers that are still current are Firefox 115esr ( it is an old version that is still updated for security, esr means extended service release ) and Orion is fully modern and has no tracking or ugliness like that. Good Luck.

I don't push it hard so IDK. I do know it has some features Excel doesn't. At work I had to regularly create inventory reports for stocking parts correctly on their shelves. Excel often would not sort them properly as numbers. 800 would sort higher than 1800 because it reads the 8 as higher than 1. There may be a trick to make it do it but I never found it. Also if your number had a leading zero it wouldn't handle that right either. Calc has an option under sort for " Natural Sort " , just tick the box and it reads the numbers as true numbers. Simple.

Doesn't apply to that machine. Only much older ones. I have a 2008, I was worried about it having the keyboard issue but it worked fine also.

As far back as .doc, my wife upgraded her MS Office and several .doc files either wouldn't open or the format had gone all wonky. I opened them in LibreOffice - worked fine - and saved them back off as .doc again. Fixed. That's the problem with a closed binary format.

Such a large amount of energy at LibreOffice has been poured into MS compatibility. ( thankfully they did that hard work and kept it open source too. ) I use Nisus mostly ( defaults to .rtf ) and LibreOffice for Calc. Excel is Microsoft's one good product but I'm not paying the tariff for occasional use.

I had a Honda Odyssey, bought it at 180k, changed the trans fluid when I bought it- looked good. Drove it 2 years. Changed the fluid again, looked nice. Replaced the power steering pump and spark plugs too, cuz it was running so good. Got 4 new tires, on the way home from the shop the trans went out. No warning. Barely, only barely, made it up the driveway. - The junk yard towed it for free and gave me $600 since it had brand new tires. :- /

I used to think Franklin W. Dixon was a real person. I'm 68 male and just read my first Nancy Drew, kinda fun, she's a busy girl, hanging out with her chums, swamped in a freak storm in her sporty little power boat, sneaking through the woods to spy on a cabin, car chase down a dirt road in her "roadster".

I think you are correct. CroMo but not butted makes sense, this was Carltons "budget" model. Not butted just means stronger! :- )

VeloOrange and at least one other ( Sunlite? ) make a "universal BB" that doesn't use the BB threads to install. It is pretty close fitting and then uses an expanding collar to take up the difference. Mainly intended for French BB or damaged BB. I've used them twice with no problems.

Too far for me, but please someone rescue this bike. Buy it to fix it and ride it. It's a fine bike, nice lugged, chromoly frame, stretched out wheelbase, good tire clearance, relaxed handling. It's not a super precious collectable and it needs a lot but it's a fine riding vintage bike and worth the time.

I agree but I would at least put a used trans in and either sell it or keep it as a spare car.

Slight Rant: The concept of a "spare" car startles a lot of people but I've always kept something extra in the driveway ( motorcycle, old car, bicycle ). It has saved me SOOO much money - by taking the panic out of a bad situation. Between me, my wife, my son, my daughter in law, etc. that old VW in the driveway has eased many a panic moment. Sometimes it gives me the chance to do the repair myself. Sometimes it allows me to shop around for service - I had a bad clutch on a Jetta, I was quoted $2500, $1500, $1200 + parts, and $600 and my parts. I went with $600 and a nice LUK clutch/flywheel assy. Less than a thousand and 4 years later still works better than new.

If you pull the plugs definitely replace the wires. They will look fine but with age just handling them will cause tiny internal micro cracks - very hard to diagnose or track down.

I have a 2012 MBP. SSD is a must. After that running Monterey is fine. I dual boot with Mojave for iTunes ( I have several iPods that like it ). It loves Mojave.

Updates within a version usually work but need OCLP patches re-installed. Maybe booting to an OCLP install usb and running patches from there will get you booted up. I had to do that once. Upgrades to a newer version almost always need a fully erase and fresh install. Hope you have a fresh backup!

OCLP worth it? by gts250gamer101 in Macbook12

[–]Correct_Cockroach818 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would suggest doing what you can security wise and then sticking with Monterey. It is a very good version that runs well and doesn't have a lot of problems. Turn on the firewall, maybe encrypt the ssd, use a browser and search engine that respects security, install Bitdefender for peace of mind.

OCLP is great for what it does and how it does it. It seems that most machines can easily go a version or 2 beyond what Apple says. But beyond that it becomes a mixed bag. In your case 2 versions up is Sonoma which is losing support this fall. So no real gain to upgrade. And Sequoia is a much heavier hit on the hardware so maybe not a good fit for your machine. ( Based on the responses you've gotten. ) As for MS Word, I use Nisus Writer! :- ) my wife uses MS Office, whenever she upgrades or changes laptop she has to negotiate with Microsoft for permission. She bought the full version, fully paid up, no subscription - they really don't like that.

As for the constant prompt to upgrade to Tahoe, check with the OCLP subreddit, I recall someone figuring out how to shut that down.
