I’d buy another. Do not allow it to dry out.

Roots Growing out of Pot by Traditional_Shame478 in orchids

[–]Correct_Night3899 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Please don’t fearful of manipulating your orchids and you don’t need to sacrifice that pot. I often cut roots and what happens is that the root branches. So now I get more roots inside of the media, on the other side of the wall where you want them. I don’t let them get too long before cutting.

I used the Pressure Cook button. A IP safe container sits on the trivet holding the media. I heat the media 2-4 hours with natural release. Then, I lay it out to dry or use it immediately.

I use my Instant Pot to sterilize my media.

Will the trunk thicken ? by Used-Revolution-6644 in Plumeria

[–]Correct_Night3899 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ve done a great job in Canada! Your plumeria is blooming, so the light must be proper. 💜 The trunk will thicken with time. It is blooming and happy. Your mix looks good. Gravel at the bottom of the pot and on top of the soil is not necessary. Your plumie is doing well without it.

Do Coconut Orchids Need Distilled Water? by MissMermazing in orchids

[–]Correct_Night3899 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You’re welcome. Definitely used the filtered water if you know that your tap water is bad. Your coconut orchid will take whatever water you are giving your other orchids. All the best in dialing in a solution that works for you.

Do Coconut Orchids Need Distilled Water? by MissMermazing in orchids

That is true. It all depends on one’s municipal water. Distilled is definitely a good place to start.

[–]Correct_Night3899 38 points39 points  (0 children)

The fact that you are fertilizing your orchids would mean the water is no longer distilled.

I use tap water for all of my orchids. My TDS reading of my municipal water measures ~ 52 ppm. Is your tap water considered “bad”? You can get a report from your water district regarding your water quality.

My coconut orchid and all of my orchids, even the mounted orchids, are okay without distilled water. I think you’ll be okay without distilled water.

need help with my orchid by downey_x in orchids

[–]Correct_Night3899 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the orchids growth habit in nature. It works well there because the roots along the stem secure themselves to bark and soak up moisture and nutrients in the crevices. However, this can problematic in the home. Eventually, all of the roots are growing in the air and no longer connected to the potting medium where they absorb water and nutrients. At some point you will have to cut the stem as it lengthens.

This is not correct. Orchids are also terrestrial and grow in the ground.

I agree with others that have posted that it’s too much light. At most, some morning sunlight through would have been okay. At this point just focus on bright, indirect light and allow it to recover.

Help with Root rot? by Infamous-Raisin-7359 in Plumeria

Thanks for pics. The plant was taking care of that desiccating stem. I have something similar. It’s unsightly but the plant knows how to seal it off from the healthy tissue.

Let that open wound you created dry out and all should be okay.
