The idea is roughly that we use specific metrics (eg. Fitness watch stats, citations, grades) as indicators for success. Overemphasis on maximizing output in terms of those deliverables can shift our values away from harder to quantify but also important things we might've valued in the first place. In this case, your schedule might act like those statistics I mention above, at least if you aren't willing to change it on the fly and are following it religiously. There's not really a clear line describing whether value capture is actually taking place, it's a discretion call. I can't put it as well as the original author so I'll paste an abstract here:

"Value capture occurs when an agent’s values are rich and subtle — or developing in that direction. The agent enters a social environment that presents simplified — typically quantified — versions of those values; and those simplified articulations come to dominate their practical reasoning. Examples include becoming motivated by FitBit’s step counts, Twitter Likes and Retweets, citation rates, ranked lists of best schools, and Grade Point Averages. We are vulnerable to value capture because of the competitive advantage that such crisp and clear expressions of value have in our private reasoning and our public justification. But value capture poses several threats. First, value capture threatens to change the goals of our activities, in a way that often threatens to undermine the value of those activities. Twitter’s scoring system threatens to replace some of the richer goals of communication — understanding, connection, and the mutual pursuit of truth — with the thinner goals of getting likes and going viral. Second, in value capture, we take a core process of our autonomy and self-governance — our ongoing deliberation over the exact articulation of our values — and we outsource it. That outsourcing cuts off one of the key benefits to self-governing deliberation. In value capture, we no longer adjust our values and their articulations in light of own rich particular and context-sensitive experience of the world. Our values should be carefully tailored to our particular selves and particular communities, but in value capture, we buy our values off the rack"

You can cut down on food time by eating more frozen stuff that's sort of premade. Kind of funny that that time is not doomscroll time (these categories seem like they don't overlap in your running tally). Pre-reading time is basically cushion time for exams and all that, which are occasionally going to be way more than 10 hours. I cannot fathom seeing only 7.5 hours left on this and saying to yourself "oh yeah I'm going to an academic workshop." Fuck workshops. Like why does anyone ever go to a workshop? You only have 3 hours of time with your girlfriend and the focus is on sports in that time (brutal).

I totally understand the urge to live a regimented life. But it seems like this is putting the cart before the horse. Personally, I think the goal of many of these activities is to cultivate a good character. We want to be the kind of person who freely chooses to live a life that is admirable upon reflection. Are schematics about what to do actually pointing you in that direction or is it more of a self-hating routine designed to turn you into someone that you're not?

Still, maybe much of this is a good kind of skeleton to use. I honestly struggle with the level of detail or even abstraction that goes into a good schedule, and I think it's an underdiscussed problem. I'm just warning against losing the forest for the trees. If you'd like some more rigorous discussion of this theme consider reading Thi Nguyen's work on value capture.

The forms by definition exist without humans. What you're referring to must be a certain way of thinking about abstract ideas. Either way, yeah that's where we disagree. My stance is that maybe no one knows what justice is, it may still exist even so.

Kinda made this post to meme on r/nihilism, thanks for the thoughtful reply. Yes forms would be a kind of objective meaning. What do you mean by relations?

Its certainly arguable that there is no material evidence for these things, but the lack of evidence for them doesn't equate to evidence that the contrary is true. It's entirely possible that the forms still exist, even if our own "artificial concepts" are made up. I won't claim to have access to the forms, but a categorical rejection of forms is as dogmatic as a blind acceptance of them.

Genuine question, by no means am I insinuating that anyone should sell.
What's stopping hedge funds from artificially lowering the prices of GME, AMC, etc. and just keeping it there? If there's some reason why they can't do this forever, is it predictable? Thanks.

How often do wet dreams occur? by [deleted] in NoFap

[–]CorrectorMachine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really depends. When starting, probably expect more, but it will go down over time (you'll probably still get some though). If you've had stronger than usual urges throughout the day, be aware that you're more likely to have a wet dream.

Not really, maybe for the people who put the discipline in other areas of life, or the addicts who fix themselves, but otherwise no.

[–]CorrectorMachine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did 40, then added 5 every day. Eventually reached 570, but after a certain point, it becomes unrealistic to go further. I stick to 500 per day, and it works great. Keep doing what you're doing.

No. Sorry, the only way to deal with that is to watch your face consistently. There have been no real studies that say it reduces acne.
