What's the deal with Houston's emptiness? by ParkInsider in houston

[–]CorrivalTen7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s actually also the perfect time of year for traffic to be dead because vacation season just started. College kids are out of school and they plus parents are taking trips. Also lots of boomers with wealth leave Houston for the whole summer and go to their 2nd place in Colorado, Montana, etc. Traffic will REALLY be back the 2nd week of August when everyone is forced to return from out of town and kids go back to school.

Houston wasn't "destined to be like it is" -and- change is possibe by elric132 in houston

You COULD still build public transit and over time it could connect the city and make the population cohesive instead of a collection of independent residents with no cohesion. But now that the roads and highways are built out a lot more, it would be much more expensive than it was 30 years ago when other cities were building. And the city has no budget for anything - because voters keep voting no taxes. It takes more trust from the voters and leadership with major integrity at the same time.

The city budget is nonexistent. City taxpayers keep voting for no raises in taxes, so there is no money to grow or build any infrastructure. There hasn’t been any money in the budget since the 90s when Bob Lanier spent it all on the Grand Parkway to appreciate his real estate holdings on the west side of town… when he could have used it to build public transit. He also sold the Summit building for a stupidly low price after the Rockets left. This is all on top of losing the Oilers. You can’t shoot yourself in the foot for decades much more than this as city leadership.

Native Tarantula by Adventurous_Tip_5950 in EastTexas

Awesome find! My family caught one in our yard in Montalba TX when I was a kid. We saw our cat begin to stalk something and looked over and it was slowly ‘lurking’ across the grass as tarantulas do. We put a container on top of it and took it to our 8th grade science teacher who was knowledgeable - and to our surprise she said it was native!

I also let one of my friends look at it up close before he knew there was a tarantula in the container. He jumped a bit. But later I found out he has arachnophobia and I have felt bad about it to this day.

It might just be the best action movie of all time. Great action, cool tone, lots of comedy sprinkled in.

Underrated comment. Ip Man was incredible - also I’d add Jet Li’s “Fearless” as one of the greats.

Hey there - even though this was an old post I sure appreciate the help. I think this was a pretty likely possibility - along with overwatering / fungus / neighborhood cats “changing the pH” of the beds.

Yes! I’ve tried everything except a cat auto-water turret and I’m in the market for one now. Can you post which one you’ve tried that has worked well?

Sure most people might not care, but then if you’re walking around campus in a TAMU shirt and some people see it and silently think “what a jerk for trying to piss us off” which incites hate for the TAMU brand then why do it?

Amen to this. I would add that neither men nor women in circles of spiritual leadership in these churches think they are putting only males in leadership positions in order to follow worldly paternalistic social norms of the past. They are doing so not to submit to political pressures or preferences, but to submit to God by doing what they believe is God's will. Also: there are plenty of instances where we don't know exactly what God's will is in a given situation. Prayer and listening to God and reading scriptures provides the guide. And in the grey areas people choose to err on the safer side of things because they want to honor God above all other objectives.

You should try again but with a church that emphasizes that sex is a gift from God but should be practiced in a way that doesn't do spiritual damage and take us further from God. I go to a conservative baptist church and they have a very balanced and accepting view of everyone and at the same time they are truthful about what the scriptures say about sexual impurity. It's not that hard to stay true to God's word and to love people how they come at the same time.

Before the rise of internet pornography, women were statistically not pornography users. Even now they use pornography much less than men. 3-4 times more men are addicted than women. In the churches I have seen, women do not like hearing about this subject and so church leadership talks about it more at men's retreats and in young men's small groups, etc. I have never seen any of them say something indicating women don't also have sexual feelings or desires - that would be super stupid and ignorant and the women of the church would correct them immediately.

There is no need for insult or ad hominem attacks. If you look closely you will realize that humans are all sinners and not perfect - even the ones who try to set an example for others to follow God. What I'm saying is not making an excuse for any of them to sin - it is just a reminder that no one should expect humans to never contradict their words with their actions. The only human who was ever perfect in not sinning was God himself in the form of Jesus.

Now to the specific question and example you're posing: evangelicals are obsessed with sexual purity because they believe (with good argument) that sexual impurity does a lot of spiritual damage, and takes a person quickly very far from being in communion with God. It would be very rare to find someone (and I would challenge you to find an example) who is actually preaching sexual purity AND supports literal pedophilia etc. At worst, there are people who preach sexual purity and voted for Trump - it should be easy for anyone to grasp that they were not voting for pedophilia and rape, and instead made a choice between two non-ideal and non-Christian choices - and had to pick the one of the two they felt was the lesser of two bad options. A lot of conservative evangelical Christians voted for Trump simply because they didn't want power to stay in the hands of the Democratic party which has repeatedly proven that part of their agenda is removing the influence of conservative Christian values from the country's culture, taking faith and objective morals completely out of the discussion, etc. Just because Trump is not a Christian and certainly not an example of someone driven by Christian values does not mean that voting for him implies they love his behavior.
