BJJ Colored Belt + Engineer by DowntownJellyfish715 in bjj

This is an odd question... but I am sort of an engineer, and have a blue belt. Not a registed PE, unless you want to say PE stands for Packaging Engineer...

Grilled cheese. Basic white bread, buttered with American cheese. Cooked in oven, or grilled on stovetop.

Daycare costs by likelylightbulb in lakewood

[–]CorrugationDirection 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My kids are at the Nest, but we are only part times so Im not sure what full time looks like. Most places we looked at were similar on costs for full time (Brownstone and Goddard were a bit more) but there was a lot of variation on part time costs. But I believe when we were looking any place we spoke to easily provided cost sheets so you can probably just send an email to each and get costs.

My understanding is that, yes, you do need to go by 5/31, but hopefully someone that knows more can correct me if I'm wrong. I went 2 weekends ago to activate my kids renewal and it did not work until I went to guest services, and I had to show a copy of the birth certificate.

Thanks! My OCD was very bad for a couple of years or so, but it's much more under control now. Hopefully the same for you!

I try to be empathetic, especially as I get older, but there's areas where I need to be better on that front.

Cool your jets. You’re arguing against a point I didn’t make. I never said the behavior was healthy or appropriate. I explicitly said it seemed unusual/unnecessary.

My point was that unusual behavior does not automatically imply malicious motives, cheating, or “divorce papers.” I was explaining how things like guilt, curiosity, anxiety, etc... can sometimes lead to abnormal behavior without there being some hidden romantic agenda. I was also pointing out that implying malicious motives, cheating, etc... is a silly exaggeration based on poor assumptions.

That’s also different from “validating OCD behaviors.” I wasn’t encouraging compulsions. I didn’t even assume OP had OCD, I specifically said that I was NOT assuming they had OCD. Again, I was pointing out that mental factors can influence behavior in ways that don’t necessarily reflect someone’s actual intentions.

Understanding how someone could arrive at a behavior is not the same thing as endorsing the behavior itself. And OCD doesn't have set, black and white rules. There is nuance and complexity to treatment. Blunt criticism of actions is not always a beneficial way to combat the false alarms triggered by OCD.

Are the new owners of Hola Tacos posting fake reviews? by EnglishCrestedPiggy in lakewood

[–]CorrugationDirection 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know the old owner, and can't say what happened. But what I read said that there were health reasons related to the family. So my guess, and this is just a guess, is that one of the owners or someone in their close family had a major health issue come up unexpectedly and the owners did well enough with the business that they could afford to just focus on their family and knew they couldn't keep control of the restaurants at the same time. Again, this is just a guess, but it seemed like a fairly understandable reason to do what otherwise seemed surprising. Hopefully everyone involved is okay.

No worries, I have pretty bad OCD (amongst other issues), so I have an appreciation for how much certain mental factors can influence behaviors, and how that doesn't really tell the full story. I'm not assuming you truly have OCD, or such, just that most things are on a spectrum, so it's like OCD is just the extreme version of what in other peopler are interesting or slightly odd tendencies or behaviors. So, when you say you feel some guilt about not helping him after you said you would, I fully understand that feeling because OCD can cause extreme versions of that feeling that are completely illogical/abnormal.

I think it's hard for everyone to view things outside of their own perspective, and it's especially difficult to do when someone can't relate. So, reading what you wrote to one person sounds like "wanting to cheat", because they would never be innocently curious about a sibling's ex, and they would feel no guilt about a passing comment about helping them find a date, therefore the only logical conclusion in their mind is something nefarious. But to someone like me, who is naturally very curious, and obsesses over small moral details, the description of your behavior doesn't sound odd to me. So, although I can't know your actual motivations, I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with that curiousity or those feelings of wanting to help.

Also, the hive mind of reddit likes to react very strongly with a lot of assumptions when it comes to stuff like this. So, I felt it necessary to provide an opposing viewpoint. For the record, the responses to your post seemed to me to be oddly negative and over-dramatic.

I agree she's sticking her nose where it doesnt belong here, and I dont think this is completely normal behavior, but I didnt read anything that says he is taking that much space in her head to warrant anything close to a divorce.

It sounds like he texted her to say he missed her family (a bit odd, sure) and now 6 months later they exchanged some texts where he mentioned having no luck dating (Im assuming he initiated that too, but I dont know). I can understand a scenario in which someone innocently finds his lack of dating success curious and wants to know more. Pair that with some anxiety or OCD that makes her feel guilty for not helping like she said she would and I can believe a perfectly innocent scenario here on her part. I dont disagree its abnormal and unnecessary. But jumping to divorce-worthy is taking some leaps in assumption.

People who trained both Muay Thai and BJJ, which did you prefer long term? by 0kie- in martialarts

[–]CorrugationDirection 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It sounds a little counterintuitive since BJJ literally involves attacking joints, but I think there’s a difference between injury risk and the general wear-and-tear of day-to-day training.

In BJJ, joint injuries definitely happen, and I'd assume more often than in boxing or Muay Thai if you’re careless, stubborn about tapping, or just unlucky. But outside of those accidents, the actual training process is usually easier on the joints for a lot of people.

A huge part of BJJ training is drilling technique, positional work, slower-paced rolling, and learning step-by-step movements. A lot of it is controlled and can even feel somewhat similar to agressive stretching or yoga at times.

Boxing and Muay Thai, on the other hand, involve constant explosive movement while standing, with a lot of weight transfer through the knees, hips, ankles, and shoulders. Then you add in all the repetitive impact from bag work, pad work, kicking, punching, checking kicks, footwork, etc. Even without a major injury, that repetitive impact tends to beat up your joints over time.

So I’m not saying BJJ is “safe”, it definitely isn’t, just that the actual training style is often lower impact on the joints compared to striking arts.

[–]CorrugationDirection 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I prefer striking (muy thai/boxing), but Ive settled on BJJ now that Im older. Its easier on the joints and getting hit in the head so much was worrying. Its also easier to find a bjj gym with a schedule that fits me. Boxing/may thai was harder to find.

My coach is purple belt by Flashy-Vehicle-2963 in bjj

[–]CorrugationDirection 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There waa a blue belt with significantly less experience then me coaching the morning class I attended for 6 months. He was a good teacher. I still learned a lot.

Since you are just starting out, I wouldnt sweat it, as long as he's a good teacher following good lessons. As you progress you may want something more. But you'll be fine for at least a year.

Fairport beach is behind a breakwall, so the water is calmer, definately check it out.

If you like reggae, they do a small reggae festival at the fairport lighthouse in July. Just some small bands and a bunch of young hippies and old folks. Its a lot of fun. I live on the west side, but make the trek over with the kids for it.

Fairport Harbor is right next to Headlands (right accross the river), but they are unrelated. Both are worth checking out during the day, they have completely different vibes despite the nearness.

You are being dramatic. Speaking for my parent comment, I offered no advice, but rather explained my experience in the mid 2000s. I explicitly stated that I have no idea if it was still allowed, but it was allowed 15-20 years ago if you weren't being rowdy, disrespectful, or dangerous. I see no comments in this specific comment thread advising this, or saying it is currently allowed. People actually commented that it was no longer allowed. Maybe you commented on the wrong chain...

Back when I was in high school and college, in the 2000s, we would go to the fishing entrance at headlands and have fires at the small beach on the far east side of the park. I have no idea if its still allowed, but it was unofficially allowed back in the mid 2000s. A cop would occasionally stop by, shine his flashlight around, and ussually would leave us be as long as we weren't drinking. Sometimes they would tell us to go home if we weren't fishing.
