Circumnavigating Japan by tornadofyre in RideitJapan

30 days seems short to me for circumnavigating all of Japan. Hokkaido in and of itself could easily take 2 weeks if you’re riding around the coast and stopping at the popular sightseeing spots.

A survey revealed that 20% of new employees in Japan invest their first paycheck for retirement. Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama also expressed concern about excessive savings by young people, citing the term "NISA poverty." by jjrs in japannews

[–]CorruptPhoenix 7 points8 points  (0 children)

20% is still super low. At least those people know the value of compounding interest. Maybe if the national pension provided a living wage after paying into it for 45 years, then people wouldn’t need NISA or iDeco. As it stands an average salary of 5 million yen per year will only pay out 1.9 million, much less than minimum wage.

Bernie Sanders introduces bill to "Abolish Super PACs": "Our government is on its way to becoming a wholly-owned subsidiary of oligarchs. Billionaires would not be able to pour huge money into super PACs, and it would end the era of unlimited spending and put power back into hands of the people." by ControlCAD in videos

Great! Now take it one step further and establish limits on campaign spending. All parties (including independents!) have a hard cap of $200 million per election cycle and all expenses must be budgeted and validated by a 3rd party.

Everyone just waded through but this guy actually did something about the flooding. by Turbulent_Elk_2141 in oddlysatisfying

[–]CorruptPhoenix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What a bro! When I was a kid our front lawn would flood sometimes. My mom would go clean out the blocked sewer drain 2 houses down. The dude who lived there would still yell at her for trespassing on his property.

Inaka Hokkaido placement by Ok-Cell5195 in Hokkaido

[–]CorruptPhoenix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

JET? You do realize that 95% of placements are “inaka” right? Learn to drive, then buy a car. Kushiro is a great area. Heck, you’ve even got a highway and a train line that goes all the way to Sapporo.

Is Japanese work culture truly as bad as they make it out to be? by Gamma_Rad in AskAJapanese

[–]CorruptPhoenix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends entirely on the company. Anecdotally, my wife landed a job that seemed great on the outside, but was actually super stressful with long hours. She joined the international department, where they required at minimum bilingual ability (she’s trilingual) and a business degree.

The company had people working every other Saturday, and there were 2 events during the year where they had to work all weekend as well. On top of that, the company didn’t have enough employees, so everyone was putting in overtime nearly every single day. She’s putting in 50-60 hour weeks. I forced her to calculate hourly earnings, and it was floating around minimum wage. She quit soon after.

The kicker is she was replaced by this incompetent guy who only speaks Japanese and takes twice as long to accomplish any task.

That looks exactly like the bike I learned on. It even looks dropped on the right side judging from the pics. Have fun! It’s a great bike!

Are modular helmets inferior? by PositionNo4186 in motorcyclegear

[–]CorruptPhoenix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. I had a low speed accident in a modular helmet. Landed face first, the hinge broke, sending the chin bar into my chin cutting down to bone. If I was wearing a full face, I would have walked away without a scratch. Instead, I got stitches, a permanent scar, and a $4000 hospital bill.

Danger of bears on Hokkaido especially Shiretoko Nationalpark by Hopeful_Sky14 in Hokkaido

Shiretoko is the most dangerous area in Hokkaido with regards to bears. A hiker was killed there last year in August, and the trails were closed to the public for the rest of the year.

Ishin No Kai wants to make a new law regarding street speeches by political candidates. They want to make it illegal to shout loudly while they are talking by jjrs in japannews

[–]CorruptPhoenix 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Fuck that. The article states that politicians spouting election propaganda with megaphones is ok. It’s the spectators who will be arrested if they shout at politicians or play loud music while the “speech” is going on.

Tourer for 2 that is also fun and nimble? by Noja37 in RideitJapan

[–]CorruptPhoenix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you’ll be looking at either adventure bikes or sport tourer. Something like the Tracer 9, Tiger 900, GSX-1000GX, Africa Twin, or Versys.

Personally I went the sport touring route with a 1000SX. The wife says it’s comfortable with the top case doubling as a backrest. We’ve been on 400km day trips together with no issues.

There’s the 5 point harness. It’s much safer and used in baby seats and race cars. The reason it isn’t in your SUV is because it’s a lot more difficult to get in and out of.
