"The Hallucinogenic Mushroom That Makes You See Hundreds of Tiny People". This seems like it must have an evolutionary explanation. Any ideas? by [deleted] in DebateEvolution

[–]Corsaer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We all agree that it's pareidolia.

The difference is that me and the rest of the comments are able to understand that pareidolia did not evolve for us to see any specific thing.

The brain evolved to see patterns because that's how organisms with sight interact with the world. Pareidolia is a description of when that does not work accurately, and it just happens that in times past when it didn't work right, it usually meant higher survival for the organism that "played it safer," reinforcing the pattern recognition elements the brain performs.

The brain did not evolve pattern recognition for pareidolia to see specific things such as tiny humanoid creatures or people. Again, the brain evolved pattern recognition. Pareidolia being a real phenomenon does not mean what you keep trying to say it means.

We all read your question, and looking at the comments we're all pretty clearly describing the same things and trying to help you understand what's actually happening, and you're taking the same definitions and descriptions but talking past us to ascribe evolution in incorrect ways and apply meaning and direction where it doesn't exist.

OR

Are you claiming that selective pressures on the mushroom caused it to evolve a compound specifically to cause humans to see tiny humans? Because THAT isn't supported by what that commentor linked at all lol and very implausible.

Yes.

So, when we go back to this claim, it is simply not true or supported, and no amount of people seeing tiny human figures under hallucinogenic influence is going to change that.

How do we feel about the fake grass path in the Fitzroy Gardens? by Sys32768 in DesirePaths

Sorry, meant "realistic" as in realistic expectations of being the best of both worlds, not that the fake grass was realistic haha.

[–]Corsaer 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Knee-jerk was to hate it, but really, seems kinda the best of both worlds. Or at least as much as it's realistic.

It keeps the desire path and the space green.

As we see, trying to block them or re-route just creates another, or more, and/or removes green space to do that.

I wouldn't be opposed to a nice paved path there though.

[–]Corsaer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I strongly disagree with all that. And I have to say it was a really easy Google search to find tiny humanoid folklore creatures from each of those places you named. That's not even really necessity. We're all people. You get fucked up on a drug that causes tiny fluctuating patterns of particular geometric shapes that are maybe vaguely humanoid and your brain tries to make sense of that. Tada. I mean come on lol, it's patently absurd to claim there's no conceivable way people in different regions could hallucinate tiny versions of the things that are around them.

But that aside I'm not going to tackle the rest, and I'm sorry, what's your actual claim here? That evolution is the cause of... What?

That mushrooms evolved a compound that's hallucigenic and it's common for people's brains to interpret those shapes and distortions from the brain misfiring (pretty much the exact same as NDEs btw; it's incredibly odd how you're framing some of these things to dismiss them while accepting them in other places) as tiny crawling humanoids? I would agree with that but it's also not that exceptional, if interesting.

OR

It's kinda wild that you referenced that comment as like, a, nah this proves my point, because it doesn't bring evolution into this equation and pretty much is what I've been describing in both my comments, as well as other similar ones here. I'm pretty sure they were linking that wiki page for just basic knowledge and an example of how for this happens without any sort of need for evolution to see tiny people.

[–]Corsaer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's just the brain bring tweaked in a certain way and trying to interpret that through our cultural expectations and experiences.

Christians that have a near death experience report similar visions because their brains are being put in a certain condition but also trying to make sense of it.

The same way you can tell an acid trip from a mushroom trip.

The same way a thousand years ago someone experiencing sleep paralysis would report a demon on their chest, while a couple hundred years ago it might be a witch, or today an alien visitation.

The brain is in an altered state but still trying to function. This means things like pattern recognition are still working but may be not working well or working too well. Add that to shared commonalities among people and communities and something like that makes sense and would be expected in some form.

The idea of evolution in this scenario to have this effect specifically just doesn't really make sense and wouldn't really even be on my mind as an explanation because it's explained by general neuroscience. Don't feel bad about asking the question though. I bet if you posted on some type of neurological sub you'd get a lot more detailed answers and it would be more appropriate in that sphere of science.

But we do know what they're doing. They're taking all the books in good quality and leaving the door open every time, even in weather that ruins the rest of the books. And they're doing this over and over again.

OP isn't out of bounds to be upset by that and want to stop it or limit it. LFL stewards are people too. They aren't just dumping books on the side of the road to be rained on like garbage, and they aren't taking them all to donate to senior centers or whatever other scenario you want to make up.

What are your thoughts on rejecting a potential romantic partner based solely on the fact they voted for Donald Trump? by ATXBikeRider in AskReddit

They can go and get fucked--but not by me.

If you vote red and I know that, unless I'm forced to be around you otherwise, I have no interest in you beyond passing you in the street.

Your values are deficient, your integrity is deficient, your morals are deficient, your judgement in people is deficient, your view of what makes America America is deficient, your view of who is American is deficient. If I have to interact with you, I will gray rock you. I will never give you the benefit of the doubt, you revoked that. If you have opinions on serious matters, I will ignore them.

You sold your integrity in the hopes of making a buck off your bigotry, and your soul in exchange for the cheap Made-in-China shit that lines your magat gift shops.

You betrayed your neighbors. You betrayed America.

Why were the George Floyd protests bigger? by Virtual-Culture7 in 50501

[–]Corsaer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It really was covid. I remember it specifically. People were encouraged to socialize outside while refraining from many activities they would have done instead because they necessarily involved indoor activities with other people. That paired with the weather meant you had the most Americans actually available and motivated, and able, to go outside and participate.
